A Day Immersed in Kyoto's Spiritual Heart

Today was a day of deep dives into Kyoto's spiritual side, a journey through vermillion gates, serene gardens, and ancient halls. Lena and I set out with a sense of anticipation, ready to soak in the history and beauty that Kyoto so generously offers. It’s days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the transformative power of travel and the profound connections we make with places and their stories.

Our first stop was the iconic Fushimi Inari Taisha. The sheer scale of the vermillion torii gates snaking up the mountain was breathtaking. The bright color popped vibrantly against the lush green landscape. I had seen countless photos, but nothing prepared me for the real experience. It was still fairly early, but there were already plenty of people making their way up the path. The steady climb was a good way to start the day.

As we walked, the sounds of the city faded, replaced by the gentle rustling of leaves and the soft murmur of fellow travelers. I found myself reflecting on the countless prayers and wishes that must have been offered at this sacred place over the centuries. Each gate, donated by a different company, seemed to whisper stories of ambition, gratitude, and hope. I took a few pictures, trying to capture the essence of the place, but I knew that no photo could truly do it justice. We walked for a couple of hours, enjoying the scenery and taking breaks to catch our breath.

The best journey always takes us home, in ways we never expected.

After descending Fushimi Inari, our next destination was Toji Temple. Also known as Kyo-o-Gokokuji Temple, this place offered a stark contrast to the vibrant energy of Fushimi Inari. Toji Temple exuded a sense of calm and timelessness. The towering five-story pagoda, the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan, dominated the skyline, a testament to the enduring craftsmanship of the past. We took our time exploring the temple grounds, admiring the intricate details of the architecture and the serene beauty of the gardens. The cherry blossoms were mostly gone, but there were still enough blooms to add a touch of color to the landscape.

Inside the Kondo Hall, we were greeted by the sight of magnificent Buddhist statues, each with its own unique expression and symbolism. I felt a sense of awe and reverence as I stood before these ancient works of art, contemplating the profound spiritual teachings they represented. Lena, who is always drawn to artistic details, was particularly fascinated by the intricate carvings and the rich colors of the statues.

Our final temple visit of the day was to Tōfuku-ji. This temple is renowned for its stunning Zen gardens, and they did not disappoint. The meticulously raked gravel, the artfully placed rocks, and the carefully pruned trees created a landscape of perfect harmony and balance. I found myself drawn into a state of meditative calm as I gazed upon the gardens, my mind quieting and my senses sharpening.

One garden was particularly striking, featuring a checkered pattern of moss and stones. It was a bold and modern design, yet it felt perfectly in tune with the ancient surroundings. Lena and I sat on a bench, soaking in the tranquility and reflecting on the day's experiences. It was the perfect way to end our temple tour.

Before heading back to the hotel, we decided to explore Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. After a day of quiet contemplation, it was fun to dive into the hustle and bustle of this vibrant commercial district. The street was packed with people, and the air was filled with the sounds of vendors hawking their wares and the enticing aromas of street food. We browsed through the shops, sampling local snacks and picking up a few souvenirs. The shopping street was bustling with locals and tourists alike. There were several souvenir shops, food stalls and clothing stores. It was a great place to people watch and soak up the local atmosphere.

For breakfast, we enjoyed a traditional Japanese meal at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. The restaurant had a minimalist design and the food was delicious. The service was attentive and the staff was friendly. It was a great way to start the day. The restaurant was small and intimate, with only a few tables and a sushi bar. The chef was friendly and seemed passionate about his craft.

Lunch was at Fujiya, where we savored some local specialties. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and the staff was very welcoming. I enjoyed the sushi and Lena tried the tempura. We both agreed that it was one of the best meals we had had in Japan so far.

Dinner was at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO Restaurant, which offered a delightful culinary experience. The atmosphere was elegant, and the food was a fusion of Italian and Japanese flavors. The restaurant is set in a beautiful historic building. The menu was extensive, and the wine list was impressive. We started with a couple of appetizers, followed by pasta dishes and a main course. The desserts were also delicious.

As we walked back to the Ace Hotel Kyoto, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. From the spiritual heights of Fushimi Inari to the serene depths of Tōfuku-ji, Kyoto had once again captivated my heart. I am looking forward to tomorrow, where we plan to explore the Philosopher's Path, Heian Shrine, and Nanzen-ji. We might even check out Bar K6 for a nightcap. Each day here feels like a new chapter in a story I never want to end. I forgot to pack my Japanese phrasebook, and I really wish I had it with me today. It would have been helpful when trying to communicate with some of the locals.
