Kyoto's Gentle Embrace
Today was a day of gentle exploration, a day where the beauty of Kyoto revealed itself in soft whispers rather than loud pronouncements. Lena and I set out with a sense of anticipation, eager to experience the blend of nature and culture that this city so effortlessly offers. It felt like the perfect day to wander, to lose ourselves in the serene atmosphere, and to discover hidden gems along the way.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Teppan Tavern Tenamonya. I'd read some great reviews, and Lena was keen to try some authentic Japanese flavors. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, run by a friendly couple who made us feel right at home. I opted for the okonomiyaki, a savory pancake that was both filling and delicious. Lena chose a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, rice, and miso soup. It was the perfect start to a day of walking and exploring.

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off for the Philosopher's Path. This tranquil walkway follows a canal lined with cherry trees, and although the peak blossom season has passed, there were still enough blooms to create a picturesque scene. The path gets its name from Nishida Kitaro, a famous Japanese philosopher who used to meditate while walking along it. I could see why – the gentle sound of the water, the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees, and the overall sense of peace made it easy to clear my mind and simply be present in the moment.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, like a quiet walk along a cherry blossom-lined path.
As we strolled, we passed several small temples and shrines. We stopped at a few that caught our eye, admiring the intricate architecture and the serene gardens. It was fascinating to see how seamlessly these sacred spaces were integrated into the natural landscape. I even spotted a small shop selling handmade crafts, and Lena couldn't resist buying a beautiful silk scarf as a souvenir.
After our leisurely walk, we decided to visit Heian Shrine. The shrine was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding. Its architecture is based on that of the ancient Imperial Palace, and its bright vermilion color makes it a striking sight. The main courtyard is vast and open, providing a sense of grandeur and spaciousness. We took our time exploring the various buildings, admiring the intricate details and soaking in the atmosphere of reverence.

One of the highlights of Heian Shrine was the Japanese garden. Although there was a small entrance fee, it was well worth it. The garden was meticulously landscaped, with winding paths, serene ponds, and carefully placed stones. The weeping cherry trees were particularly stunning, their delicate branches cascading down like waterfalls of pink. Lena, with her graphic designer's eye, was particularly taken by the composition of the garden, noting how each element seemed to be perfectly balanced and harmonious. It was a truly peaceful oasis, a place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and reconnect with nature.
By lunchtime, we were starting to feel peckish again. We consulted our trusty travel guidebook and decided to try Mezopotamia Kebab House. It might seem a bit out of place to eat kebab in Kyoto, but the reviews were glowing, and we were curious to see what it was all about. The restaurant turned out to be a small, unassuming eatery run by a friendly Turkish family. I ordered a chicken kebab, and Lena opted for a falafel wrap. The food was fresh, flavorful, and surprisingly authentic. It was a welcome change of pace from the traditional Japanese cuisine we'd been eating, and it gave us a taste of home, reminding me of the kebab shops back in Heidelberg.

Our final stop of the day was Nanzen-ji Temple. This Zen temple is one of the most important in Kyoto, and it's known for its beautiful gardens and its impressive Sanmon gate. The temple grounds are vast and sprawling, with numerous sub-temples and walking paths to explore. We started by visiting the main hall, where we admired the intricate Buddhist statues and the serene atmosphere. Then, we wandered through the gardens, taking in the carefully raked gravel, the moss-covered stones, and the meticulously pruned trees. It was a masterclass in Zen landscaping, a place where every element seemed to be imbued with meaning and purpose.

One of the most unique features of Nanzen-ji Temple is the aqueduct that runs through the grounds. This brick structure was built in the Meiji period to carry water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto, and it's a fascinating example of engineering and design. We walked along the aqueduct, listening to the sound of the water flowing beneath our feet and marveling at the way it seamlessly blended into the temple landscape. It was a reminder that even the most practical of structures can be beautiful and inspiring.
As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to a nice dinner at Nakamura. This restaurant is known for its traditional Kaiseki cuisine, a multi-course meal that showcases the best of seasonal ingredients. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with private rooms and attentive service. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. We savored every bite, appreciating the skill and artistry that went into creating such a memorable meal. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring and discovering the beauty of Kyoto.

Finally, to cap off the evening, we ventured to Bar K6, a sophisticated spot known for its expertly crafted cocktails. The ambiance was intimate and refined, with a touch of old-world charm. I opted for a classic whiskey sour, while Lena chose a creative gin-based concoction. The drinks were expertly mixed, and we savored them slowly, enjoying the quiet conversation and the relaxed atmosphere. It was a perfect end to a day filled with serenity and culinary delights. I made sure to make a mental note to try and recreate some of these drinks back in Heidelberg, perhaps adding a little German twist.

As we head into tomorrow, we are planning to explore the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, Kamigamo Shrine, and Shimogamo Shrine. Lena is particularly excited about the gardens, and I'm looking forward to seeing the ancient shrines. We also plan to do some shopping at the Daimaru Kyoto Store and treat ourselves to a Kobe beef steak dinner at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. It promises to be another day of cultural immersion and culinary adventures.
Back at the Ace Hotel Kyoto, I reflected on the day's adventures. Kyoto has a way of captivating the senses and nourishing the soul.
