A Day of Discovery in Kyoto
Today was a day of diving deeper into Kyoto's multifaceted charm. It's easy to get caught up in the major tourist spots, but today, Lena and I ventured off the beaten path and discovered some truly unique experiences that I'm excited to share. From historical castles to sake tasting and imperial gardens, it was a day filled with cultural immersion and delightful surprises.
Our day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Oryori Menami. This charming spot is known for its *obanzai*, Kyoto-style home cooking. It's the kind of place where you feel like you're stepping into someone's home, greeted by the warm smiles and comforting aromas of local dishes. I opted for the classic porridge, a simple yet satisfying start to the day. Lena, ever the adventurous one, tried a selection of small, seasonal dishes that were both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. It was a perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set off to Fushimi-Momoyama-jō Castle. Now, I have to admit, I had mixed expectations. I knew it was a replica built in the 1960s, but I was curious to see it nonetheless. The castle is located in a quiet, residential area, and as we approached, its imposing structure loomed into view. While the interior isn't open to the public, the grounds themselves offer a peaceful retreat. We strolled around the gardens, admiring the twin keeps and soaking in the serene atmosphere. It's a far cry from the bustling tourist hotspots, which made it all the more appealing.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you never thought to ask.
Next on our itinerary was the Gekkeikan Ōkura Sake Museum. Being a fan of trying new things, I was particularly excited about this. Fushimi is renowned for its sake breweries, and Gekkeikan is one of the most well-known. The museum is housed in a beautifully preserved brewery, and it offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and production of sake. We learned about the traditional methods, the different types of rice used, and the importance of water quality. The highlight, of course, was the sake tasting at the end. We sampled a few different varieties, each with its own distinct flavor profile. Lena, who is usually not a big sake drinker, found herself pleasantly surprised by the smoothness and complexity of some of the brews.

After our sake adventure, we made our way to the Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace. This was perhaps the most tranquil experience of the day. The palace was built in 1630 as a retirement residence for Emperor Gomizuno. Although the original buildings were destroyed by fire, the gardens remain a stunning example of Japanese landscape design. To visit the Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace, you need to book a free tour by the Imperial Household Agency. The tour leads you through meticulously manicured gardens, past serene ponds, and over picturesque bridges. The audio guide provided insightful commentary on the history and significance of each element. It was a truly peaceful experience, a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

In the late afternoon, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at the Sanjo Meiten-gai Shopping Arcade. This covered arcade is a treasure trove of shops, selling everything from traditional crafts to modern goods. We wandered through the arcade, browsing the various stores and soaking in the lively atmosphere. It's a great place to find souvenirs, sample local snacks, and simply people-watch. Lena found a beautiful *yukata* (summer kimono) at one of the shops, while I picked up a few quirky trinkets for my collection.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a special experience at French Dining Top of Kyoto. Located on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto, this revolving restaurant offers panoramic views of the city. As the restaurant slowly rotated, we were treated to breathtaking vistas of Kyoto's skyline and surrounding mountains. The French cuisine was exquisite, a delightful fusion of classic techniques and local ingredients. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, savoring delicious food while taking in the beauty of Kyoto at night.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the incredible diversity of experiences that Kyoto has to offer. It's a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and modernity, and there's always something new to discover. Tomorrow, we're venturing further afield to Osaka, with plans to visit Osaka Castle, Dotonbori, and the Umeda Sky Building. I am excited to see what the next day brings!
I am also thinking that I should have remembered to pack the phrasebook, as it would have helped me navigate some of the more local spots.
I am looking forward to tomorrow's adventure.
Until next time,
Matthew
