Stepping Back in Time in the Blue Pearl

Today was all about diving deeper into the history and culture of Chefchaouen. After several days of wandering the mesmerizing blue streets, Lena and I were ready to explore the landmarks that have shaped this unique town. It's amazing how a place can feel so timeless, and today's adventures only reinforced that feeling.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Sindibad. We secured a table with a stunning view overlooking Place Outa el Hammam and the Kasbah. I ordered a traditional Moroccan soup, while Lena opted for the Harira. Sipping on strong coffee and enjoying the local flavors while watching the town slowly wake up was the perfect way to start our explorations. The crisp morning air and the promise of a day filled with discovery made it even better.

Fueled up and ready to go, our first stop was the Kasbah. This 15th-century fortress was built to protect Chefchaouen from Portuguese invaders, and it’s remarkably well-preserved. As we walked through the entrance, I couldn’t help but imagine what life must have been like centuries ago. The Kasbah has served many purposes over the years, including being a residence for governors, a military arsenal, and even a prison.

The Kasbah now houses an ethnological museum, which provided fascinating insights into the region's history, culture, and art. We explored exhibits showcasing traditional Berber clothing, jewelry, and household items, each telling a story of daily life in this unique corner of Morocco. Lena, with her keen eye for design, was particularly captivated by the intricate patterns and vibrant colors of the textiles.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

One of the highlights of our visit to the Kasbah was climbing the tower. From the top, we were treated to panoramic views of Chefchaouen and the surrounding mountains. The sea of blue buildings stretched out before us, a breathtaking sight that reminded me why this town is often called the “Blue Pearl of Morocco”. I snapped photos, trying to capture the beauty of the scene, but no picture could truly do it justice.

Leaving the Kasbah, we strolled towards Bab El Hammar, one of the town's historic gates. This gate, with its traditional brickwork, is a reminder of Chefchaouen’s rich history and architectural heritage. Passing through Bab El Hammar felt like stepping back in time, imagining the countless people who had walked this path before us. It’s amazing how these old structures can evoke such a strong sense of connection to the past.

Lunchtime found us at Restaurant Ali Baba. We chose it based on a recommendation from a local artisan we met earlier in the day. The restaurant offered a cozy atmosphere and a menu filled with traditional Moroccan dishes. I decided to try the tagine, while Lena, ever the adventurous one, opted for the vegetable couscous. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. We enjoyed our meal while soaking in the lively atmosphere of the restaurant.

After lunch, we dedicated the afternoon to shopping for some authentic Moroccan clothes. The medina was a treasure trove of colorful textiles, handwoven rugs, and traditional garments. We wandered through the narrow streets, browsing the various shops and stalls. Lena was particularly interested in finding a traditional djellaba, while I was on the hunt for a unique scarf or shawl. Bargaining is definitely part of the experience, and we had fun haggling with the shopkeepers to get the best prices. Lena eventually found a beautiful djellaba with intricate embroidery, and I snagged a soft, woolen scarf with vibrant geometric patterns.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Restaurant Jbaria for dinner. This restaurant came highly recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and family-friendly atmosphere. We shared a delicious couscous and a flavorful tagine, savoring the rich spices and aromas. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home.

Thinking about tomorrow, we are looking forward to venturing a bit outside of Chefchaouen and visiting Cave Acher and Derb Zaghdoud. I've heard that the cave is a fascinating natural wonder, and I’m excited to explore it with Lena. We're also planning to have dinner at Bar Oum Rabie, which I've heard has a great atmosphere. It’s always nice to have something to look forward to, and tomorrow promises to be another memorable day.

Tonight, as I sit here writing, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we had today. Chefchaouen is more than just a pretty town; it's a place with a soul, a history, and a vibrant culture. Exploring its landmarks, savoring its cuisine, and interacting with its people has been an enriching experience that I will cherish forever.

Tomorrow, we leave the blue city and head back to Tangier to catch our flight back to Germany. This trip has been nothing short of magical, and I'm already dreaming of our next adventure together. The memories we've made in Chefchaouen will stay with us long after we've returned home, and I can't wait to share more of our experiences with you all.

Until next time, keep exploring!
