Beyond the Blue: Unearthing Chefchaouen's Hidden Gems

Today was all about venturing beyond the iconic blue streets of Chefchaouen and diving deeper into what this region has to offer. Lena and I were eager to explore some of the more adventurous and authentic experiences, and today certainly didn't disappoint. From subterranean explorations to savoring local flavors, it was a day of discovery that truly enriched our understanding of this enchanting Moroccan town.

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Le Coin. I opted for a traditional Moroccan pancake, while Lena enjoyed a European-style pastry. It’s always a fun compromise finding a place that caters to both our tastes! After fueling up, we set off for our main adventure: exploring Cave Acher.

The drive to the cave was scenic, offering panoramic views of the Rif Mountains. The landscape this time of year is stunning, with the autumn colors adding a warm glow to the already picturesque scenery. October in Chefchaouen brings comfortable temperatures, with highs in the low 70s°F (around 21-24°C), making it ideal for outdoor activities. I made a mental note to buy a small umbrella, just in case, as the weather forecast mentioned a chance of rain.

Reaching the cave, we met our guide, who was incredibly knowledgeable about the cave's history and geology. Before entering, we were given helmets and flashlights, essential gear for navigating the subterranean world. The cave itself was mesmerizing. We crawled through narrow passages, marveling at the stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over centuries. The high chambers were particularly impressive, with their magnificent limestone formations. It was an otherworldly experience, a stark contrast to the bright blue medina above.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not on the well-trodden paths, but in the hidden depths beneath our feet.

Emerging from the cave, we felt a sense of accomplishment and awe. It was a reminder that there's so much more to a place than what meets the eye. We took a moment to appreciate the stunning views of Talassemtane National Park, where the cave is located.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to Derb Zaghdoud, a charming street known for its traditional architecture and local artisan shops.

We strolled along the street, admiring the intricate details of the buildings and browsing the various shops. Lena, with her keen eye for design, was particularly fascinated by the handcrafted goods. We even stopped at Dar Meziana, a beautiful riad that perfectly captures the charm of Moroccan architecture.

For lunch, we decided to try Assaada, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine.

We sat on the terrace, enjoying the beautiful view while we waited for our meal. I ordered the kefta, while Lena opted for the tagine. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, a testament to the fresh, local ingredients used. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home.

In the late afternoon, we decided to relax and soak in the local atmosphere at Restaurant Bar Chaouen.

This vibrant spot is known for its lively ambiance and friendly service. We enjoyed some refreshing drinks while watching a local football match on TV. It was a great way to unwind and observe the local culture.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Bar Oum Rabie for dinner.

This bar is known for its delicious grilled cuisine and affordable prices. We shared some tapas and enjoyed a glass of Moroccan wine while taking in the view of the Grand Mosque. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, the perfect ending to a day of exploration.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our Moroccan adventure. We plan to visit Ensemble d'artisanat complexe to pick up some souvenirs and Place El Haouta to soak in the last moments of Chefchaouen’s unique atmosphere. We’ll have breakfast at Cremeri Elmaataoui, lunch at Chez Foad, and a final dinner at Restaurant Triana. Before heading to Tangier, we will stop by Hibart Souvenirs Shop to ensure we haven't missed any treasures.

Reflecting on the past nine days, I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have experienced the beauty and culture of Chefchaouen. It's a place that has captured my heart, and I know I'll be back someday. For now, I'll cherish the memories and continue to share our adventures with you all.

The weather in Chefchaouen in October is generally comfortable, with average temperatures ranging from the low 60s to the low 80s Fahrenheit. There's a moderate chance of rain, so it's a good idea to pack an umbrella. The humidity is moderate, and the wind speed is generally around 10 mph.
