A Day of Artistic Immersion and Island Flavors

Today was a beautiful blend of art, nature, and local flavors, perfectly encapsulating the essence of Naoshima Island. From exploring the intricate Art House Project to trying my hand at fishing and indulging in delicious Japanese cuisine, it was a day filled with enriching experiences. The island's unique charm and artistic vibe continue to captivate me, making every moment here a treasure.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Perma_Naoshima (パーマ). This cozy spot is known for its delicious and authentic ramen, and I was eager to try it out. I opted for the classic shoyu ramen, and it was absolutely divine. The broth was rich and flavorful, the noodles were perfectly cooked, and the toppings were fresh and delicious. It was the perfect way to start a day of exploration.

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I headed to the Art House Project, specifically Kadoya. This project is a collection of renovated traditional houses transformed into art installations, scattered throughout the Honmura district. Kadoya, meaning Corner House, was the first Art House created and it immediately drew me in. The exterior was traditionally restored, with charred boards and a tiled roof. Inside, I was greeted by two site-specific works by Tatsuo Miyajima. The first, Sea of Time '98, featured a shallow pool with submerged LED counters counting from one to nine at varying speeds. It was mesmerizing to watch the numbers flicker and change, each set by a Naoshima resident to reflect their personal sense of time. The second piece, Naoshima's Counter Window, was a liquid crystal display glass window with three large digital time counters that detected motion and revealed slices of the scenery outside.

Art doesn't have to be confined to museums; it can breathe life into everyday spaces and connect us to our community.

After immersing myself in the digital art of Kadoya, I decided to embrace the natural beauty of Naoshima and headed to the Naoshima Fishing Park. I'll admit, I'm not much of an angler, but the park's serene waterfront views and expansive green spaces were too inviting to resist. I rented some gear and tried my luck at casting a line. While I didn't catch anything noteworthy, the experience was incredibly relaxing. The gentle sea breeze, the sound of the waves, and the stunning coastal scenery made it a perfect way to unwind and appreciate the island's tranquility. I even spotted some local wildlife, with birds and marine life adding to the park's charm.

By lunchtime, my stomach was starting to rumble again, so I made my way to Nagomi for a traditional Japanese meal. Located within the Naoshima welfare center, Nagomi offers a unique communal dining experience. I opted for one of their set meals (Teishoku), which featured a variety of local dishes. The food was simple, hearty, and incredibly flavorful. It was a great opportunity to connect with locals and experience the true essence of Kagawa's culinary heritage. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home.

In the afternoon, I decided to do some shopping at Naoshima Shop Umihotaru. This charming cafe and shop embodies the spirit of Naoshima, with its artistic decor and tranquil atmosphere. I enjoyed a refreshing beverage while browsing the unique crafts and local products. It was the perfect place to pick up a few souvenirs and soak in the island's artistic vibe. The cafe's design harmonizes with Naoshima's commitment to creativity and sustainability, making it a delightful spot to unwind and appreciate the artistic essence of my surroundings.

As evening approached, I made my way to Okonomiyaki Umikko for dinner. This family-run restaurant is known for its delicious Okonomiyaki, a savory Japanese pancake. I ordered the Umikko Special, and it was absolutely fantastic. The pancake was perfectly cooked, with a crispy exterior and a soft, flavorful interior. The friendly owners provided great service and made me feel incredibly welcome. The atmosphere was cozy and atmospheric, making it a perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I took a leisurely stroll along the coast, savoring the cool evening air and the gentle sound of the waves. The island was peaceful and quiet, with the stars twinkling brightly in the night sky. I reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the unique charm and artistic beauty of Naoshima Island.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Teshima Island and explore the Teshima Art Museum, as well as the Honmura Lounge & Archive. I'm excited to see what artistic wonders await me on this neighboring island.

As I prepare for another day of exploration, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude. Naoshima Island has truly captured my heart, and I'm eager to continue discovering its hidden gems and artistic treasures.

This solo trip to Naoshima is turning out to be exactly what I needed. It's a chance to reconnect with my love for art, immerse myself in a different culture, and find inspiration in the beauty of nature. And while I miss Hans, I know he'd be thrilled that I'm embracing this adventure and making the most of my time here. Perhaps next time, we can explore this island together.

I'm also reminded of the small travel-sized art supplies and reusable water bottle that I forgot to pack. These would have come in handy during my visit to the Art House Project and the Naoshima Fishing Park. I'll make sure to remember them for future trips.

Naoshima continues to surprise and inspire me. Each day brings new discoveries and unforgettable experiences. I'm excited to see what tomorrow holds and to continue sharing my journey with you all. Until then, happy travels!

I'm also thinking of my friend, Lars, back in Berlin. He's a huge fan of Japanese art and culture, and I know he'd absolutely love Naoshima. I'll have to tell him all about it when I get back.

The blend of art and nature here is so inspiring, it reminds me of a quote from Danish artist Olafur Eliasson:

The way we deal with the world, constantly transforming the world through art and architecture, that is the most natural thing.

And that's exactly what Naoshima has done – transformed itself into a living, breathing work of art.

I'm excited for another day of artistic immersion tomorrow!
