Island Views and Aromatic Air
Day seven in Yakushima brought a blend of coastal exploration and sensory delights. As I continue my solo journey, the island reveals more of its hidden gems, each experience adding a unique layer to my understanding and appreciation of this World Heritage site. Today was about lighthouses, observatories, and the enchanting scents of Yakushima, creating memories that I know I'll treasure long after I leave.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Aqua Cafe. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of local flavors drew me in. I savored a traditional Japanese-style western breakfast, which provided the perfect fuel for the day's adventures. The cafe was bustling with locals and fellow travelers, all eager to start their day exploring Yakushima. I enjoyed the meal while making a mental note to try to recreate some of the dishes back home in Canmore; Liam would love them.
Fueled and ready, I headed towards my first destination: the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering glimpses of the coastline and the island's interior. As I approached the lighthouse, the panoramic views were simply breathtaking. The lighthouse stands proudly against the backdrop of the deep blue ocean and the rugged coastline. Although the lighthouse itself wasn't open to visitors, the surrounding area was perfect for a leisurely stroll. The sea breeze was invigorating, and the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks was incredibly soothing. I spent some time capturing the scene with my camera, trying to convey the sheer beauty and tranquility of this coastal spot.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of places, where nature's beauty and human ingenuity converge.
Next on the itinerary was the East China Sea Observatory. The drive took me through more of Yakushima's scenic landscapes, each turn revealing new vistas and perspectives. Upon arriving at the observatory, I was immediately struck by its strategic location. Perched high above the coastline, it offered sweeping views of the East China Sea and the surrounding area. The observatory itself provided a fascinating glimpse into marine research and the monitoring of oceanic conditions. Although the scientific aspects were interesting, it was the panoramic views that truly captivated me. I could see for miles in every direction, the vast expanse of the ocean stretching out to the horizon. It was a humbling experience, reminding me of the immense power and beauty of nature. I imagined Liam would have been fascinated by the engineering and scientific aspects of the observatory; he always had a keen interest in how things worked.

After a morning of coastal exploration, it was time for lunch. I decided to try hiyoriya, a restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine and commitment to using local ingredients. Finding it was a little tricky, as it's tucked away and resembles a regular house, but the effort was well worth it. The restaurant was small and intimate, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. I opted for one of their set meals, which featured a variety of seasonal dishes. Each bite was a burst of flavor, showcasing the freshness and quality of the ingredients. It was a truly satisfying culinary experience, and I left feeling nourished and content. The restaurant's dedication to organic and vegetarian cuisine resonated with my own values, making it an even more enjoyable meal. I'll have to remember this place for future trips, and perhaps try to recreate some of the dishes at home.

With my appetite sated, I set out to explore YAWARACA “The Scent of Yakushima LAB”. This unique shop and laboratory focuses on extracting essential oils from the local sugi trees, and I was eager to learn more about their process. Upon arriving, I was greeted by the soothing aroma of cedar and other natural scents. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about their craft, explaining the entire process from forest thinning to oil extraction. I learned that YAWARACA thins neglected reforestation areas to help restore them to broadleaf evergreen forests, extracting essential oils from jisugi instead of Yakusugi. They value a lifestyle that connects future generations to a world of abundant nature. I was fascinated by the intricate process and the commitment to sustainability. I spent some time browsing their selection of essential oils and other aromatic products, eventually choosing a few to bring back to Canmore. I knew Liam would appreciate the calming and grounding effects of the cedarwood oil, especially after a long day of coding. The whole experience was a sensory delight, and I left feeling refreshed and invigorated.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Yakushima Airport Restaurant for dinner. Given it was my last night on the island, I thought it would be a convenient and fitting end to the day's adventures. The restaurant had a charming, old-school vibe, reminiscent of traditional soba shops. I purchased a meal ticket at the counter and ordered a local specialty. The food was simple but satisfying, and the atmosphere was relaxed and unpretentious. It was the perfect way to reflect on the day's experiences and to savor the last moments of my time in Yakushima. I enjoyed watching the small planes take off and land, imagining the journeys of the passengers and the stories they carried with them.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore and the Botanic Gardens, followed by a relaxing evening at Ambar. I'm looking forward to delving deeper into the island's cultural heritage and natural beauty before I head back to Tokyo.
Each day in Yakushima offers a new perspective, a new scent, and a new memory to cherish.
