A Day of Discovery and Reflection

Today was a day dedicated to understanding Yakushima beyond its stunning natural landscapes. I wanted to delve into the island’s history and culture, and explore its botanical diversity. It’s easy to get lost in the ancient forests, but it’s just as important to appreciate the stories and traditions that have shaped this unique place.

My day started with a hearty breakfast at Smiley. It’s a cozy little cafe overlooking the harbor in Anbo. I opted for their signature sandwich set, complete with a steaming cup of coffee. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day. It was the perfect way to fuel up before heading to the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore.

The Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore was my first stop. Tucked away near the Miyanoura River, the museum offered a captivating glimpse into the island's past. From ancient artifacts to contemporary displays, the exhibits painted a vivid picture of the lives of Yakushima's inhabitants, their traditions, and their deep connection to the natural environment. The museum isn't large, but it’s packed with information. I learned about the island's early settlers, their farming practices, and the significance of the Yakusugi cedar trees in their culture. There was even a replica of a traditional house from Kuchinoerabu Island, built before World War II. It was fascinating to see how the islanders lived and adapted to their surroundings.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much more there is to discover.

After immersing myself in history, I decided to spend the afternoon at the Botanic Gardens.

Located in the Mugio District, the gardens were a serene escape into nature. As I wandered through the winding paths, I was surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant blooms. The gardens boast an impressive collection of native and exotic flora, including an herb garden, a tropical fruit orchard, and even a butterfly conservatory. The sweet scents of tropical fruits filled the air, and I couldn't resist sampling some fresh-squeezed guava juice at the garden's shop.

One of the highlights was the observatory, which offered a commanding view of the coastal Toroki Falls and Mt. Mocchomu. It was the perfect spot to take in the beauty of Yakushima's landscape and reflect on the day's discoveries. The gardens were meticulously maintained, with educational displays providing insights into the island's unique biodiversity and conservation efforts. I learned about the different plant species and their significance within the local ecosystem. It was a truly immersive experience that deepened my appreciation for Yakushima's natural wonders.

As evening approached, I made my way to Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan for lunch.

This bustling market is a hub of local flavors and crafts. I decided to try the grilled exocet, also known as flying fish, a Yakushima specialty. It was delicious, with a slightly smoky flavor and a crispy skin. I also explored the souvenir store, picking up some local teas and crafts to bring back home. The market was lively and vibrant, with locals and tourists alike browsing the stalls and sampling the local delicacies.

For dinner, I ventured to Matsutake, a charming soba restaurant tucked away in the southwestern part of the island.

It's a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the effort. The restaurant is housed in a traditional Japanese building, with low tables and tatami mats creating an authentic atmosphere. I ordered the cold soba noodles with tempura, a local favorite. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the tempura was light and crispy. The owners were incredibly kind, making me feel right at home. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural and culinary exploration.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I decided to check out Ambar, a local bar known for its lively dart culture.

It was a fun and welcoming place, with locals and tourists mingling over drinks and games. I even tried my hand at darts, though I quickly realized I was no match for the regulars. It was a great way to unwind and experience Yakushima's nightlife.

As I reflect on today, I feel a deeper connection to Yakushima and its people. I am looking forward to tomorrow, where I plan to visit the Kokemusu Forest. It’s another day to immerse myself in the natural beauty of this extraordinary island.

The experience at the museum reminded me of a quote by the great Danish storyteller, Hans Christian Andersen: "To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, To gain all while you give, To roam on a road of many lands while living but one." That's what Yakushima feels like – a place where one can roam on a road of many lands while living but one, gaining so much with every step.

Tonight, I'm especially grateful for the reminder that history and nature are intertwined here, and understanding both enriches the experience of exploring this magical island. I'm also feeling a bit nostalgic, thinking about Liam back in Canmore. I know he would have loved today's adventures, especially the Botanic Gardens. Maybe one day, we'll explore this enchanted island together. For now, I'll continue to soak in all that Yakushima has to offer, one day at a time.
