Solo Adventure: Exploring the Untamed Beauty of Yakushima
Day 4: Chasing Waterfalls and Island Flavors: A Day of Discovery in Yakushima
Explore Yakushima's majestic waterfalls and savor local cuisine on a solo journey through this stunning Japanese island.
Island Waterfalls and Culinary Delights
Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Yakushima and indulging in its local flavors. I set out early, eager to witness the island's famed waterfalls and sample some of the culinary delights it has to offer. As a project manager, I usually deal with blueprints and schedules, but today, nature was my only guide, and my camera, my only tool.
My first stop was Ryujin Falls. The journey there was an adventure in itself, navigating the winding roads that cut through Yakushima's dense forests. The anticipation grew with each turn, and as I approached, the sound of rushing water filled the air. The falls are nestled in a lush, green environment, creating a serene and almost mystical atmosphere. Ryujin Falls, while not the tallest, has a certain charm. The water cascades down the rocks, creating a mesmerizing display of nature's power. I spent a good hour just soaking in the view, taking photos, and enjoying the tranquility of the place. It's moments like these that remind me why I love traveling solo – the freedom to linger and appreciate the simple things.

From Ryujin Falls, I headed to Senpiro Falls. This waterfall is a completely different experience. As I approached, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the granite cliff over which the water plunges. The name 'Senpiro' apparently means 'one thousand fathoms,' a testament to the size of the rock face. The falls themselves are impressive, with water cascading down with considerable force. I took advantage of the three observation points to get different perspectives of the falls and the surrounding landscape. From one vantage point, I could see the coastal villages and beaches in the distance, and from another, I had a clear view of Mt. Mocchomu. The sheer scale of the granite monolith is awe-inspiring. I learned that the valley was formed by the Tainoko River over many years. Standing there, surrounded by such ancient natural architecture, I felt a deep connection to the earth and its history.

Nature's architecture is far more impressive than anything I could ever build.
After a morning of chasing waterfalls, it was time to refuel. For breakfast, I stopped at Smiley, a café in Anbo. The café is known for its cozy atmosphere and friendly service. Overlooking the harbor, it was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee. I opted for a simple breakfast of coffee and a muffin, enjoying the view of the Anbo River mouth. It's a great spot for a quick bite and a caffeine fix before continuing the day's adventures.

For lunch, I decided to try Matsutake, a noodle restaurant in the southwest of Yakushima. Getting there involved a scenic drive through the island's countryside, which was a treat in itself. Matsutake is a family-run restaurant in a traditional Japanese building. The interior had tatami floor seating. I ordered a bowl of soba noodles with tempura, a local favorite. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the tempura was light and crispy. The owner was incredibly kind, and the service was prompt. It was a bit hidden, but asking locals for directions led me to this gem. The cold soba noodles with tempura were particularly delicious. This place is definitely worth a visit for anyone looking to experience authentic Yakushima cuisine.

As the day wound down, I chose DINING CAFE BAR SLOW for dinner. This café is known for its Italian cuisine, and I was curious to see how it compared to the local fare. The café has a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with a good view of the forest from the back. The menu offered a range of options, including salads, soups, pasta, burgers, and seafood. I opted for a pasta dish, which was delicious and satisfying. The ingredients were fresh, and the flavors were well-balanced. It's a great place to unwind after a day of exploring.

To cap off the evening, I headed to Ambar, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere and extensive drink menu. It was the perfect spot to relax and reflect on the day's adventures. The bar had a good selection of drinks, and the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. I enjoyed a couple of drinks while chatting with some of the locals, learning more about the island and its culture. It was a great way to end the day, soaking in the local vibe and making new friends.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore more of Yakushima's coastal wonders. My itinerary includes a visit to the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse and the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall. I'm also looking forward to trying some local cuisine at Michikusa for breakfast, Kamogawa Restaurant for lunch and SamPotei for dinner. And who knows, maybe I'll find another hidden gem along the way.
Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. It's a place where nature reigns supreme, and the local culture is warm and inviting. I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique island and share my adventures with you all. As I reflect on today's journey, I'm reminded of the importance of slowing down, appreciating the beauty around us, and embracing the unexpected. Until tomorrow, happy travels!
