Explore Yakushima's coastal beauty with lighthouses, sea turtles, and local flavors. A day of serene discoveries and cultural immersion.
Seaside Serenity and Gentle Creatures
Today was all about embracing the coastal wonders of Yakushima. After several days immersed in the island's ancient forests, I was eager to explore its seaside attractions and experience a different facet of this unique destination. It turned out to be a day filled with stunning views, heartwarming encounters, and a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty that Yakushima has to offer.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Michikusa in Anbo. This cozy spot, recommended by a local, was the perfect way to start the day. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. It was simple, nourishing, and gave me a real taste of local home cooking. It's the kind of place where you feel like you're getting a warm hug from the inside out, setting a positive tone for the adventures ahead. I made a mental note to try and replicate some of the dishes when I get back home to Hawthorne; Olivia would love them.

Fueled up and ready to go, I set off towards the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The drive itself was an experience, with narrow winding roads hugging the coastline, offering glimpses of the sparkling sea through the lush greenery. As I approached the lighthouse, the landscape opened up, revealing a picturesque scene of a white lighthouse standing proudly against the backdrop of the vast Pacific Ocean.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences come from the simplest moments, like standing by a lighthouse, feeling the sea breeze, and knowing you're a small part of a much larger world. The Yakushima-todai Lighthouse isn't just a navigational aid; it's a symbol of the island's maritime heritage. I took my time wandering around the area, soaking in the panoramic views and capturing the moment with my camera. It was incredibly peaceful, with only the sound of the waves and the occasional seabird breaking the silence. I even found a small, hidden shrine near the lighthouse, adding a touch of mystery to the experience. The lighthouse is unmanned, so you cannot visit it, but the views are still incredible. The drive to the lighthouse is along a narrow road, but there is a spacious parking area.
After spending a good hour at the lighthouse, I made my way to the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall. As someone interested in wildlife and conservation, I was particularly excited about this visit. The hall is a small but informative museum dedicated to the sea turtles that nest on Yakushima's beaches. I learned about the different species of turtles, their life cycles, and the threats they face.

The highlight of the visit was seeing the baby turtles up close. They were tiny, adorable creatures, and it was heartwarming to know that the Sea Turtle Hall is actively involved in protecting them and their eggs. The manager was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, providing clear and engaging explanations about the turtles and their conservation. It's inspiring to see dedicated individuals working to make a difference in preserving these magnificent animals. I even picked up a few postcards with adorable sea turtle pictures – Ethan will love them!
For lunch, I headed to Kamogawa Restaurant in Anbo. This restaurant came highly recommended for its local dishes, especially the flying fish. I decided to try the Sashimi Set Special, which included a variety of fresh seafood and, of course, flying fish. The sashimi was incredibly fresh, and the flying fish was prepared in a way I had never tasted before – crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. It was a true culinary delight, and I savored every bite. The restaurant had a friendly, no-frills atmosphere, and I enjoyed eating alongside the locals. It felt like a genuine Yakushima experience.

With the afternoon still ahead, I decided to explore Gallery KIANU. This charming little shop showcases local crafts and artwork, providing a glimpse into the island's artistic side. I spent some time browsing the displays, admiring the intricate woodwork and vibrant paintings. It's amazing how much talent can be found in such a small place. I ended up buying a small wooden carving of a Yakushima cedar tree as a souvenir – a reminder of the island's ancient forests and my incredible journey here.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at SamPotei, a riverside restaurant in Anbo. The setting was perfect, with beautiful views of the river and a relaxed, jazzy vibe. I opted for some local specialties, including Ume Suisho, a Japanese delicacy made of fish cartilage marinated with plum. It was an adventurous choice, but I'm glad I tried it – the crunchy texture and salty-sour flavor were surprisingly enjoyable. I also sampled some local craft beers, which were a refreshing complement to the meal. The service was attentive and friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how diverse Yakushima is. From the ancient forests to the charming coastline, from the gentle sea turtles to the welcoming locals, there's something for everyone on this island. It's a place that nourishes the soul and awakens the senses. I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore its beauty and share my experiences with you all.
Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into Yakushima's cultural heritage with visits to the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore and the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at Fisherman's Bar NINA in the evening. Another day of discovery awaits, and I can't wait to see what Yakushima has in store for me.
