A Day Among Giants
Today was nothing short of spectacular, a day where the immensity of nature dwarfed all my worries and filled me with a sense of awe. The towering cliffs of Todra Gorge were my companions, and the warmth of the Moroccan sun kissed my skin. It's amazing how a change of scenery can bring clarity and peace.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant La Place. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea and freshly baked bread. The café buzzed with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day in this magnificent setting. It was a simple meal, but the flavors were vibrant and energizing, setting the perfect tone for the adventures ahead.

Fueled and ready, I set off for the Todra Gorge Hike (Loop). The trail was moderately challenging, with rocky paths and some steep inclines, but the views were more than worth the effort. As I ascended, the gorge opened up before me, revealing layers of towering limestone cliffs painted in hues of red and orange. The sheer scale of the gorge was humbling, a testament to the power of nature's artistry. I paused frequently to catch my breath and take photos, trying to capture the grandeur of the landscape. It felt good to stretch my legs after all the bus rides getting here from Marrakech. I missed my regular hikes in the Peak District with Olivia and Ethan, but this solo trek was proving to be a rewarding experience in its own right.

The beauty of Todra Gorge lies not just in its towering cliffs, but in the vibrant life that thrives within its embrace.
As I hiked, I encountered several Berber nomads tending to their goats and sheep. They greeted me with warm smiles and nods, their faces weathered by the sun and wind. It was a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that permeates this region, a connection to a way of life that has endured for centuries. I thought about Ethan and how he would love to see the goats. I made a mental note to bring him here someday.
After a few hours of hiking, I made my way to the Cooperative les nomades tinghir. This cooperative is dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Berber crafts, particularly carpets. I was greeted by a group of women weaving intricate patterns on looms, their hands moving with practiced ease. They explained the symbolism behind the designs, each telling a story of their heritage and beliefs. I purchased a small rug as a souvenir, a tangible reminder of the warmth and artistry of the Berber people. The advantage of buying from the coop is the money stays in the community. There is no middleman. It felt good to support their work directly.

Lunch was at Auberge restaurant Tizgui, a charming spot with stunning views of the gorge. I indulged in a tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, bursting with flavors of tender meat, vegetables, and aromatic spices. The auberge was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after my hike. I overheard other travelers discussing rock climbing, a popular activity in the gorge. Maybe I'll give it a try tomorrow, although my construction project manager skills might not translate directly to scaling cliffs.

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore the area around Restaurant Cafe Oasis Rose, which would also be my dinner spot. I found a quiet spot overlooking the gorge and simply sat there, soaking in the scenery. The sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the cliffs and painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the simple joys in life. I closed my eyes and listened to the sounds of nature – the gentle breeze, the distant bleating of goats, and the rustling of leaves.

As evening approached, I headed to Restaurant Cafe Oasis Rose for dinner. The restaurant had a laid-back atmosphere, with cozy seating and soft lighting. I ordered a grilled kebab, which was cooked to perfection and served with a side of couscous. After dinner, I decided to try the bar at the same location. I enjoyed a glass of local wine while chatting with other travelers. The conversation was lively and engaging, and I learned about their adventures in Morocco and beyond. It was a reminder of the shared human experience that connects us all, regardless of our backgrounds or beliefs.
Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had experienced in such a short time. From the invigorating hike to the cultural immersion at the cooperative to the simple pleasure of a delicious meal, every moment was a gift. Todra Gorge had exceeded all my expectations, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore its wonders.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Tighremt N Tazgue, an ancient kasbah, and Aventures Verticales Maroc, where I might try my hand at rock climbing. I'm also planning to have breakfast at Restaurant Chez Michele, lunch at Moroccan Table Restaurant, and dinner at Al manadir todra gorge. A stop at Depot Nomade is also on the cards for some souvenir shopping.
As I write this, I'm sitting under a blanket of stars, the silhouette of the gorge looming in the distance. The air is cool and crisp, and the silence is broken only by the occasional hoot of an owl. It's a perfect ending to a perfect day, a moment of peace and tranquility that I will cherish forever.
Goodnight from Todra Gorge. Tomorrow, more adventures await!
