Beacon of Light and Gentle Giants

Today was a day of contrasts, moving from the rugged coastline to the delicate world of sea turtles. As a horticultural consultant, I often find myself drawn to the intricate balance of nature, and Yakushima continues to offer endless opportunities to witness this firsthand. It's days like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to explore at my own pace and fully immerse myself in the experience.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at SamPotei. It was a delightful start, fueling up with a traditional Japanese meal. I savored the flavors, appreciating the simple yet satisfying combination of rice, miso soup, and grilled fish. The izakaya atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, setting a positive tone for the day ahead. I made a mental note to try and recreate the miso soup back in Heidelberg; Klaus would certainly appreciate a taste of my travels.

First on the itinerary was the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the island's stunning coastline. As I approached the lighthouse, the panoramic views were breathtaking. The vast expanse of the ocean, the rugged cliffs, and the distant islands created a scene of serene beauty. I spent some time simply soaking it all in, feeling the sea breeze on my face and the warmth of the sun on my skin. It was a perfect moment of solitude and reflection.

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.

The Yakushima-todai Lighthouse, standing proudly on Cape Nagata, has been a beacon of maritime safety since 1897. Although the lighthouse itself is unmanned and not open to the public, just standing there, feeling the natural and spectacular coastline, was worth the trip. The views of Kouerrabu Island, the Mishima Islands, and even Kyushu's mainland were vaguely visible in the distance. I could see why this spot was chosen; the strategic location offers a clear view of the surrounding waters, guiding ships safely through the straits. I took several photographs, trying to capture the essence of this remote and beautiful place, knowing that the images would never fully convey the feeling of being there.

After leaving the lighthouse, I headed towards the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall. I've always been fascinated by marine life, and the opportunity to learn more about sea turtles was something I couldn't pass up. The hall is a small but informative museum dedicated to the conservation of these incredible creatures. As I entered, I was greeted by a knowledgeable staff member who provided a wealth of information about the different species of sea turtles that visit Yakushima, their nesting habits, and the threats they face.

Yakushima is a significant nesting ground for loggerhead turtles, and the museum plays a vital role in educating the public about the importance of protecting these endangered animals. The exhibits were thoughtfully curated, with interactive displays and hands-on objects that made the learning experience engaging and memorable. I was particularly moved by the displays showing the turtles' migratory routes across the Pacific, highlighting the incredible distances these creatures travel each year. It's amazing that about one-fourth of the spawning sea turtles choose Yakushima to lay their eggs! I learned that the nesting season spans from May to August, and Inakahama Beach is carefully monitored and protected during this time. What a commitment!

The highlight of my visit was seeing the baby turtles. They were tiny and fragile, yet full of life. It was heartwarming to learn about the conservation efforts in place to protect these creatures and their nesting sites. The staff was incredibly passionate, answering all my questions with enthusiasm. It reinforced how crucial it is to respect their habitat, especially during nesting season. The admission fee supports the conservation efforts for the turtles and their eggs, which made the visit even more meaningful.

For lunch, I stopped at Kamogawa Restaurant. This place offered a wide variety of appetizing meal options at affordable prices. I decided to try the local flying fish, a Yakushima specialty. It was delicious! The staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. I enjoyed the experience, savoring the flavors of the island. I am so glad I read about this restaurant before coming to Yakushima. It really gave me an authentic taste of the island.

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore the local bar scene and visited Hitomekuri. This place is known for its unique atmosphere and selection of drinks. It was a cozy spot, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. The bar had a mix of locals and tourists, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. I enjoyed a local craft beer, savoring the unique flavors and reflecting on the day's adventures. Simone Armer mentioned this spot in her blog, and I can see why it's so popular!

For dinner, I chose Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. The restaurant has a lovely ambiance, with local art adorning the walls. The food was delicious, showcasing the island's fresh produce and seafood. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploration.

As I reflect on today, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of Yakushima. From the rugged coastline to the delicate world of sea turtles, this island continues to surprise and inspire me. I am looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore and the East China Sea Observatory. It’s amazing how much history and tradition is packed into this small island.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into Yakushima's history and culture with a visit to the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore and the East China Sea Observatory. I am particularly interested in learning more about the island's past and its unique traditions. I will also be making a stop at Moriizumi to pick up some local crafts.

For now, I'm content to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the evening, knowing that tomorrow will bring new adventures and discoveries. I'm also grateful for the chance to share my experiences with you, my readers, and I hope that my words inspire you to embark on your own journey of discovery.

I'm reminded of a German idiom Klaus taught me: Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei – Everything has an end, only the sausage has two. It's a humorous reminder that even the best experiences must eventually come to a close. But just as the sausage has two ends, there's always another adventure waiting around the corner. And I can't wait to see what that adventure will be!

Bis bald (see you soon)!
