Exploring the Blue Pearl of Morocco with Friends
Day 11: Farewell to Chefchaouen: A Day of Blue Hues and Hidden Caves
Reflecting on my final day in Chefchaouen, Morocco, exploring the blue city's charm and discovering the mysteries of Cave Acher with friends.
A Final Day in the Blue Pearl
As our Moroccan adventure nears its end, I wanted to soak in every last bit of Chefchaouen's magic. Today was all about revisiting favorite spots, discovering new hidden corners, and sharing a few final experiences with my friends before we head back to Germany. It's hard to believe our 11 days here are almost over, but the memories we’ve made will last a lifetime.

The day began with a delightful breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream. Fatima had read amazing reviews about their crepes, and since she has a sweet tooth, she insisted we try it. It was a great start to the day. The ladies running the place were incredibly friendly, and the crepes were delicious – a perfect blend of local flavors and warm hospitality. I opted for a simple cheese crepe, while others indulged in Nutella and banana. We sat on the steps nearby, savoring every bite and enjoying the peaceful morning atmosphere before the city truly woke up.

After breakfast, we decided to explore Cave Acher, a spot a bit outside the main city that promised a different kind of adventure. The drive there was scenic, offering stunning views of the Rif Mountains. The landscape shifted from the blue-washed buildings to rugged, natural beauty, reminding me of the diverse landscapes Libya has to offer. Though Fatima and Omar couldn't join us for the cave exploration, my friends and I were excited to see what this hidden gem held.

The cave itself was fascinating. Exploring its depths felt like stepping into another world. The cool, damp air was a welcome change from the August heat. We hired a local guide who shared stories and legends about the cave, making the experience even more immersive. It was a bit challenging navigating the uneven terrain, but the unique rock formations and the sense of mystery made it worthwhile.

Back in Chefchaouen for lunch, we chose Restaurant Bar Chaouen. The place had a relaxed vibe, with both indoor and outdoor seating. I was in the mood for something savory, so I ordered a tagine. The rich flavors and tender meat were incredibly satisfying. My friends tried some local salads and grilled meats, and everyone seemed pleased with their choices. The friendly staff added to the pleasant experience, making us feel right at home.

In the afternoon, we wandered through the medina, revisiting some of our favorite spots. The vibrant blue alleyways were as enchanting as ever, and we took countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this unique city. I picked up a few last-minute souvenirs – a colorful scarf for Fatima and a small drum for Omar. It’s these little mementos that help keep the memories alive long after the trip is over.
As the day wound down, we found ourselves at lyajor tiskit, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on our Moroccan adventure. We enjoyed some refreshing drinks, listened to music, and shared stories and laughs. It was a perfect ending to our last full day in Chefchaouen.

For our final dinner, we decided on Restaurant Morisco. Located in Outa el Hammam square, the restaurant offered a mix of Moroccan and Italian dishes. I opted for a Moroccan chicken dish, while others chose pasta and pizza. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was perfect for a farewell dinner. We lingered over our meal, savoring the last moments of our culinary journey in Chefchaouen.

Tomorrow, we start our journey back to Tangier, where we’ll catch our flight back to Germany. While I’m looking forward to seeing Fatima and Omar, I’ll definitely miss the vibrant colors and warm hospitality of Chefchaouen. This trip has been an incredible experience, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have shared it with my friends. I know I’ll carry the memories of this blue pearl in my heart for years to come.
As I prepare to leave, I can't help but think about how travel enriches our lives, broadening our perspectives and deepening our understanding of the world. It’s through these experiences that we grow, learn, and create lasting memories. Until next time, Chefchaouen – shukran for everything.
Reflecting on our time here, I am reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta, a famous Moroccan explorer:
Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
And indeed, I have many stories to tell.
The weather in Chefchaouen in August is generally hot and sunny, with average temperatures ranging from the high 60s to the mid-90s Fahrenheit. There's very little chance of rain. Clear and sunny conditions are very common. The days are long, with plenty of sunshine. It's important to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen.
My essentials for today included:
- Camera: To capture the beauty of the cave and the blue city.
- Comfortable walking shoes: Essential for exploring the uneven terrain of the cave and the hilly streets of Chefchaouen.
- Sunscreen: To protect against the strong August sun.
- Travel guidebook: For historical insights and local tips.
- Reusable water bottle: To stay hydrated throughout the day.
I still regret forgetting my power adapter and sunglasses at home.
Tomorrow marks the end of our trip. We will travel from Chefchaouen back to Tangier and take our flight back to Germany.
