Exploring the Blue Pearl of Morocco with Friends
Day 9: Wandering Through Chefchaouen's Heart: A Day of Discovery
Explore Chefchaouen's vibrant heart: Wander through Plaza Mohammed V, discover Bab El Hammar, and savor local flavors in the blue city.
Blue Hues and Hidden Gems
Today was a day of simply wandering and letting Chefchaouen reveal its secrets. With no strict agenda, my friends and I embraced the spontaneity of travel, discovering hidden corners and soaking in the unique atmosphere of this blue-washed city. It's amazing how much more you notice when you're not rushing from one landmark to another!
Our day began, as most good days do, with a hearty breakfast. We headed to Café Sindibad, a local favorite known for its traditional Moroccan breakfast. The aroma of freshly baked bread and mint tea filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. I opted for the classic *ftour beldi*, a spread of local bread, honey, cheese, and olives, accompanied by a steaming pot of mint tea. The combination of sweet and savory was the perfect start to a day of exploration. Fatima would have loved this breakfast; she always appreciates a good spread of local delicacies. We lingered over our meal, chatting and making plans for the day, before venturing out into the blue labyrinth once more.

Our first stop was Plaza Mohammed V, a small but charming garden set in the shape of a roundabout. It’s a lovely place to take a rest and people-watch. The plaza, built by the Spanish army during the colonization period, still maintains its original architecture, plants, ceramics, and fountain. It really feels like the heart of the city. The well-kept greenery offered a welcome respite from the sun, and we took a few moments to simply sit and observe the locals going about their daily lives. It was fascinating to see how this small plaza served as a meeting point and a place of relaxation for the community. Omar would have enjoyed running around the fountain, chasing the pigeons, but I was glad to simply sit and soak in the atmosphere with my friends.

From the plaza, we wandered towards Bab El Hammar, one of the historic gates of Chefchaouen’s medina. Located in the Souika district, its name is thought to evoke a once-prominent local trade – “El Hammar” referring to donkey drivers. This area served as a crucial launching point for commerce, connecting Chefchaouen with major cities to the south like Fes and Rabat, and to the north towards Tangier and Tetouan. Bab El Hammar was thus a strategic hub for meetings, merchandise display, and the departure point for trade caravans. Some historical accounts also suggest this gate was used by Moroccan soldiers allied with the Spanish for their military operations. As we walked through the gate, I couldn't help but imagine the countless merchants and travelers who had passed through here before us, their donkeys laden with goods from distant lands. It was a tangible connection to the city's rich history and a reminder of its importance as a trading hub. It’s amazing to think about the history that has unfolded right where I was standing. It felt like stepping back in time.

Sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones you don't plan, the moments of serendipitous discovery that reveal the true essence of a place.
By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. Based on a recommendation from a local artisan, we chose Chez Foad for our midday meal. This charming, family-run restaurant is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and warm hospitality. We shared a variety of dishes, including a flavorful tagine with tender chicken and vegetables, fluffy couscous, and a selection of grilled meats. Each dish was expertly prepared and bursting with the vibrant flavors of Moroccan spices. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff made us feel like we were dining in their home. It was a truly memorable culinary experience. The high ratings of this place would be impossible without the well-trained staff. Terrific service is something visitors agree upon here. Prices are good for the quality you get. There is a cool atmosphere and beautiful decor at this spot.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to indulge in another Moroccan tradition: a visit to a local bar. The Magic Lamp House of Aladin caught our eye with its colorful décor and inviting atmosphere. We climbed to the rooftop terrace, where we were rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the city. As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the blue-washed buildings, we sipped on refreshing mint tea and shared stories and laughter. The views were magical, the food was amazing, and just overall great experience. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery. Sat on the roof top terrace overlooking the Kasbah. Amazing sunset while enjoying a delicious 3 course meal. Definitely worth a meal here !!

For dinner, we opted for Restaurant Ali Baba, drawn in by the promise of authentic Moroccan cuisine. We were not disappointed. The restaurant's warm and inviting ambiance, accentuated by Moroccan decor and soft lighting, created a perfect setting for enjoying our final meal of the day. The staff were incredibly friendly and eager to share their knowledge about Moroccan cuisine. I decided to try the lamb tagine, a local favorite, and it was absolutely divine. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the spices were perfectly balanced. My friends opted for the vegetable couscous, which they declared to be one of the best they had ever tasted. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with culinary delights.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the simple beauty of Chefchaouen and the warmth of its people. It's a city that invites you to slow down, to wander aimlessly, and to discover its hidden treasures at your own pace. And it's a city that I will carry with me long after I have left its blue-washed walls. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Casa Familia and Place El Haouta, continuing our exploration of this enchanting region. I am eager to see what other surprises Chefchaouen has in store for us. I am also looking forward to breakfast at Le Coin, lunch at Tissemlal, and dinner at Bar Oum Rabie. A little bit of shopping at La Botica De La Abuela De Aladdin is also on the agenda.
I am so glad I decided to take this trip with my friends. Sharing these experiences with them has made it all the more special. It reminds me of the importance of human connection and the joy of exploring the world together.
