A Day of Discovery

Today was all about diving deeper into the heart of rural Japan. Leaving the familiar sights of Shirakawa-go behind for a few hours, I ventured into the neighboring Gokayama region. It was a day filled with historical insights, tranquil natural beauty, and, of course, more delicious food. These are the days that truly make a trip memorable, offering a glimpse into the soul of a place.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Keyaki. It's amazing how a simple meal of grilled fish, rice, and miso soup can set the tone for the entire day. Fuelled up and ready to explore, I hopped on a local bus heading towards Gokayama.

Gokayama Folklore Museum: A Journey Through Time

The Gokayama Folklore Museum was my first stop, and it proved to be an unexpectedly captivating experience. From the moment I stepped inside, I was transported back in time. The museum is housed in a traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouse, which in itself is a sight to behold. Inside, the exhibits showcased the daily life, tools, and traditions of the people who lived in this region centuries ago.

I was particularly fascinated by the displays on traditional paper making and the local silk industry. It's incredible to think how these remote communities were once thriving centers of craftsmanship. Seeing the intricate tools and learning about the skills passed down through generations gave me a newfound appreciation for the ingenuity and resilience of the Gokayama people.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where history whispers and traditions endure.

As I wandered through the museum, I couldn't help but reflect on my own background. Growing up in Libya, I was surrounded by a rich history of Berber and Arab cultures. Moving to Germany with Fatima and Omar, we embraced a new life while cherishing our roots. Visiting places like Gokayama reminds me of the importance of preserving our heritage and sharing it with future generations.

Tranquility at the Water Lily Pond

After immersing myself in history, I was ready for a change of pace. I made my way to the Water Lily Pond, a serene oasis nestled amidst the rolling hills. The pond was a riot of color, with vibrant green lily pads floating on the surface and delicate blossoms reaching for the sky. The air was thick with the scent of fresh water and blooming flowers, creating a truly tranquil atmosphere.

I spent a blissful hour simply sitting by the pond, listening to the gentle rustling of the leaves and watching the dragonflies dance above the water. It was the perfect opportunity to clear my head and recharge my batteries. As a photographer, I couldn't resist capturing the beauty of the scene, trying to frame the perfect shot of the water lilies against the backdrop of the surrounding forest.

Lunch at Hiiragi: A Taste of Local Flavors

By lunchtime, my stomach was rumbling, so I headed back to Shirakawa-go in search of a satisfying meal. Based on a recommendation from a fellow traveler, I decided to try Hiiragi, a charming restaurant known for its Hida beef skewers and traditional dishes. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly.

I opted for the Hida beef skewers, and they did not disappoint. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, perfectly seasoned with a blend of local spices. It was served with a side of rice and pickled vegetables, creating a balanced and delicious meal. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but think how lucky I am to be able to experience such authentic culinary delights.

Shopping for Souvenirs at Gassho

No trip is complete without a bit of souvenir shopping, so after lunch, I made my way to Gassho, a local shop known for its handcrafted goods and traditional sweets. The shop was filled with an array of colorful items, from intricately woven baskets to delicate pottery. I spent a happy hour browsing the shelves, admiring the craftsmanship and chatting with the friendly shopkeepers.

I ended up buying a few small gifts for Fatima and Omar, as well as a couple of souvenirs for myself to remind me of my time in Shirakawa-go. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I always try to find unique, handcrafted items that reflect the culture and traditions of the places I visit.

Dinner at Kita no Sho: A Culinary Finale

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Kita no Sho for dinner, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Japanese cuisine. I decided to try one of their Hoba Miso sets, a regional specialty where miso is served on a magnolia leaf and cooked over a small grill. The aroma was incredible, and the taste was even better. The miso had a deep, sweet, and nutty flavor that paired perfectly with the local Hida pork.

The restaurant itself was beautiful, with traditional decor and a serene atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring and immersing myself in the local culture. As I savored my meal, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to travel and experience new things.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit the Nishi Chaya District and the Jin Homura Art Museum. I'm also looking forward to trying out Tenshukaku, both as a restaurant for dinner and as a bar for a nightcap. It's exciting to think about the new adventures that await, and I can't wait to share them with you all.

As I walked back to my ryokan under the starlit sky, I couldn't help but smile. Today was a reminder that the best travel experiences are often found in the simple moments – a quiet walk through nature, a delicious meal shared with friendly locals, and a glimpse into the history and traditions of a place. These are the memories that I will cherish long after I've left Shirakawa-go behind.

And as I drifted off to sleep, I thought about Fatima and Omar back in Bielefeld. I knew they would have loved today’s adventures, and I couldn’t wait to share my stories and photos with them. Perhaps one day, we can all return to Shirakawa-go together and create new memories as a family.
