Uji: A Day of Discovery
Today’s adventure took Jürgen and me to Uji, a charming city just south of Kyoto, renowned for its exquisite temples, lush landscapes, and, of course, its world-famous matcha. It was a day filled with history, culture, and culinary delights, offering a perfect blend of exploration and relaxation. As a freelance translator and travel blogger, I always seek to immerse myself in the local atmosphere, and Uji certainly didn't disappoint. I am excited to share the highlights of our day, from the serene Byodoin Temple to the bustling Maiko Antiques.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Antonio in Kyoto. While the name suggests Italian cuisine, it was more of a French-inspired bistro. I opted for the classic eggs benedict, while Jürgen enjoyed a robust Croque Monsieur. Fuelled up, we hopped on a train to Uji, eager to explore this historic city. I always find train travel in Japan so efficient and comfortable, a stark contrast to some of the commutes I endure back in Berlin. The journey itself was a pleasure, with picturesque views of the Japanese countryside unfolding outside the window.
Our first stop in Uji was the magnificent Byodoin Temple. As we approached, the iconic Phoenix Hall emerged, shimmering in the morning sun. It was truly a breathtaking sight. This temple, initially built in 998 as a villa, was converted into a temple in 1052 by Fujiwara no Yorimichi. The Phoenix Hall, constructed in 1053, is the only original building remaining, having survived numerous fires and calamities over the centuries. It is such a privilege to witness a structure that has stood the test of time, a tangible link to Japan's rich past. I was particularly struck by the two bronze phoenix statues perched atop the roof, their golden forms gleaming against the clear blue sky. It’s no wonder this hall is featured on the back of the Japanese ten-yen coin!

We joined a short guided tour of the Phoenix Hall's interior, which was conducted in Japanese, but thankfully, English leaflets were available. Inside, we marvelled at the statue of the Amida Buddha, a masterpiece of 11th-century sculpture. The intricate details and serene expression of the Buddha were truly captivating. The temple and its surrounding garden are designed to represent the Pure Land Paradise, and I must say, they succeeded in creating a sense of tranquility and peace. As we strolled through the Jodo-shiki garden, I couldn't help but feel a sense of calm wash over me. The meticulously manicured landscape, with its serene pond and carefully placed stones, was a true work of art.
Uji is more than just a location; it's an immersive experience that transports you through centuries of history and culture.
Next, we ventured into Uji Park, a sprawling green space along the Uji River. The park was alive with activity, families picnicking under cherry blossom trees, couples strolling hand-in-hand, and artists capturing the scenic beauty on their canvases. We took a leisurely walk along the riverbank, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and the stunning views of the surrounding hills. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom, creating a magical canopy of pink and white. I couldn't resist snapping dozens of photos, trying to capture the ephemeral beauty of the scene. It reminded me of the springtime festivals we enjoy back in Berlin, although the Japanese cherry blossoms definitely have a unique charm.

Our walk led us to the iconic Uji Bridge, one of the oldest bridges in Japan. Said to have been built around 646 by a monk from Nara, this bridge has been rebuilt numerous times throughout history. The current structure, completed in 1996, retains the traditional design, with Japanese cypress and bronze detailing. Standing on the bridge, I imagined the countless travelers who had crossed this same path over the centuries, from ancient monks to modern-day tourists. The Uji Bridge has been featured in numerous works of literature and art, most notably in *The Tale of Genji*, often credited as the world's first novel. It was fascinating to stand in a place so deeply intertwined with Japanese culture and history.

After our historical and scenic explorations, it was time to indulge in Uji's other claim to fame: matcha. We stopped at a local teahouse for a traditional tea ceremony. The preparation of matcha is an art form in itself, with precise movements and meticulous attention to detail. The tea was whisked to a frothy consistency and served with a small Japanese sweet. The taste was intense and slightly bitter, but also incredibly refreshing. I appreciated the ritualistic aspect of the ceremony, a moment of mindfulness and connection to Japanese tradition. It was so different from my usual afternoon coffee in Berlin, but a welcome change of pace.
For lunch, we decided to try Hyoto Shijo Karasuma, known for its delicious shabu-shabu. The restaurant had a calming and clean ambiance, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We opted for the Kyo shabu set, which included a variety of appetizers and the main hot pot meal. The yellowtail and broiled mackerel were particular highlights, and the dashi shabu was a truly unique experience. It was a perfect way to warm up and refuel after a day of exploring.

In the afternoon, we explored the local shops, seeking out unique souvenirs and gifts. We stumbled upon Maiko Antiques Kyoto, a hidden gem in the Higashiyama district. This shop was a treasure trove of vintage Japanese toys, retro-futuristic models, and eclectic antiques. The owner, dressed in a bright Hawaiian shirt, was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, answering our questions with enthusiasm. I ended up buying a few vintage matchboxes and a small model robot, quirky reminders of our time in Kyoto. The shop was dimly lit and crammed with fascinating objects, creating a truly immersive and unforgettable experience. It was like stepping back in time, a glimpse into Japan's pop culture history.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Tategami, a restaurant known for its authentic Kyoto cuisine. The restaurant had a calm and traditional atmosphere, with private rooms available for a more intimate dining experience. We opted for the Kaiseki Course, a multi-course meal featuring seasonal delicacies. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The chef used fresh, local ingredients to create a truly memorable culinary experience. It was the perfect way to end our day in Uji, a celebration of Japanese gastronomy.

Before heading back to Kyoto, we made one last stop at Bar Prost for a nightcap. This cozy bar had a German-inspired theme, with a wide selection of beers and cocktails. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, a perfect place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing. I enjoyed a local craft beer, while Jürgen opted for a classic gin and tonic. We toasted to our wonderful day in Uji, grateful for the opportunity to experience this beautiful and historic city.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, Kamigamo Shrine, and Shimogamo Shrine. It’s going to be another day filled with cultural immersion, and I can’t wait to share it with you all. I'm particularly looking forward to the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, as I've heard they are stunning in the spring. I'm also intrigued by the Kamigamo and Shimogamo Shrines, which are said to be among the oldest and most important Shinto shrines in Kyoto. It will be another early start, but I'm sure it will be worth it.
Until then, *Prost* from Kyoto! I am so grateful for these experiences with my friends.
