Bamako Adventures Unfold

Today was a vibrant mix of wildlife encounters, cultural immersion, and delightful culinary experiences right here in Bamako. It was a day that truly showcased the heart and soul of Mali, and I'm excited to share every moment with you. From exploring the local zoo to savoring authentic Malian cuisine, it was an unforgettable experience for the entire family.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Amandine by Sel & Miel. The aroma of freshly baked pastries and strong coffee filled the air, instantly awakening our senses. Fatoumata chose a delicate croissant, while Aminata opted for a pain au chocolat. Ibrahim, ever the adventurous one, selected a colorful macaron. I enjoyed a traditional Malian coffee, strong and rich, the perfect start to a busy day. The pastries were exquisite. It was a taste of France right in the heart of Bamako, a delightful fusion of cultures that set the tone for our day. I remember back in Goundam, my mother used to make the most amazing breakfast beignets. This reminded me of those mornings.

After breakfast, we headed to the ZOO NATIONAL DU MALI. The excitement was palpable as we approached the entrance. Aminata and Ibrahim were eager to see the animals, and Fatoumata and I were just as excited to share this experience with them. The zoo, though not the largest I’ve seen, was home to a diverse collection of animals, many of which are native to West Africa. We saw lions, monkeys, various bird species, and even a few crocodiles. Ibrahim was particularly fascinated by the monkeys, mimicking their playful antics and laughing gleefully as they swung from tree to tree. Aminata, with her keen interest in photography, captured some amazing shots of the colorful birds, their plumage vibrant against the backdrop of the Malian landscape. It was heartwarming to see my children connect with nature, a stark contrast to our city life back in Montreal.

Exploring the world with my family is not just about seeing new places; it's about creating shared memories that will last a lifetime.

As we strolled through the zoo, I couldn't help but reflect on my own childhood in Mali. Growing up in Goundam, I had limited access to such organized displays of wildlife. My encounters with animals were often in their natural habitats, a more raw and unfiltered experience. Yet, seeing the animals in the zoo, I appreciated the efforts to conserve and protect these species, educating the public about the importance of biodiversity. I made sure to explain to Aminata and Ibrahim the significance of each animal in Malian culture and the need to protect them for future generations.

By lunchtime, we were all ravenous. We decided to try Bamako Kitchen, a local restaurant known for its authentic Malian cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with the chatter of locals and the aroma of spices. We ordered a variety of dishes, including tô, a staple Malian dish made from millet or sorghum flour, and grilled fish seasoned with local herbs. Fatoumata, being the culinary expert in our family, identified each spice and herb, explaining their origins and uses in Malian cooking. Aminata and Ibrahim, initially hesitant to try new flavors, were soon won over by the deliciousness of the food. Even I, who grew up eating these dishes, was impressed by the quality and authenticity of the cuisine. It was a taste of home, a reminder of the flavors I had missed since moving to Canada.

After lunch, we ventured into the heart of Bamako to visit Bassoum Textile, a shop renowned for its exquisite Malian fabrics. The shop was a riot of colors and patterns, showcasing the rich textile traditions of Mali. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant indigo dyes and intricate designs, each telling a unique story. Fatoumata, with her keen eye for fashion, helped Aminata choose a beautiful piece of fabric for a new dress. I selected a few pieces of bogolanfini, a traditional Malian mud cloth, to bring back to Montreal as souvenirs. These textiles are more than just fabrics; they are works of art, expressions of Malian identity and creativity. I plan to use one of them to create a wall hanging for our living room, a constant reminder of our Malian heritage.

As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to dinner at Chez Thierry, a restaurant known for its authentic Malian cuisine and warm atmosphere. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, with soft lighting and traditional Malian music playing in the background. We ordered a feast of local delicacies, including yassa, a flavorful chicken dish marinated in lemon and onions, and mafé, a hearty stew made with peanut sauce. The food was simply divine, a perfect ending to a day of culinary exploration. As we savored each bite, we reminisced about the day's adventures, laughing and sharing our favorite moments. It was a perfect family dinner, a celebration of our Malian roots and the bonds that tie us together.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we took a leisurely stroll through the streets of Bamako, soaking in the sights and sounds of the city at night. The city was alive with activity, with people chatting, laughing, and enjoying the cool evening air. We stopped at a local market, where vendors were selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. Aminata and Ibrahim were fascinated by the colorful displays, marveling at the ingenuity and creativity of the local artisans. It was a glimpse into the everyday life of Bamako, a reminder of the resilience and spirit of the Malian people.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the National Museum, hoping to delve deeper into Mali's rich history and cultural heritage. I am particularly excited to see the exhibits on ancient Malian civilizations and learn more about the country's artistic traditions. We will also try a new breakfast place called l’aquarium resto, lunch at Fadlfood and dinner at LE SAVANA. And maybe, just maybe, I'll sneak in a quick visit to Chez Thierry again, this time for a nightcap at their bar. After all, a little taste of Mali never hurts.

Today was more than just a day of sightseeing; it was a journey of discovery, a celebration of our Malian heritage, and a testament to the power of family. As I reflect on the day's experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share this adventure with my loved ones. Mali is more than just a travel destination; it's a part of who we are, a connection to our past, and a source of inspiration for our future. And as we continue our exploration of this beautiful country, I am excited to uncover more hidden gems and share them with you.

I'm also keeping an eye out for any local events happening around Bamako. I noticed there are several international conferences scheduled for November. Though I won't be attending any, it's interesting to see Bamako becoming a hub for international gatherings. Perhaps on a future trip, I'll make it a point to attend one of these conferences and learn more about the latest developments in various fields.

As I prepare for another day of adventure, I am reminded of the importance of embracing new experiences and cherishing the moments we share with our loved ones. Travel is not just about seeing new places; it's about creating memories that will last a lifetime. And as we continue our journey through Mali, I am grateful for the opportunity to connect with our roots, explore new horizons, and create lasting memories with my family.

Until tomorrow, à bientôt!
