Discovering Bamako's Charm: A Day of Exploration and Delight

Today was a day filled with exploration, delicious food, and vibrant experiences as we continued our journey through Mali. From the lush greenery of Mali National Park, Bamako revealed its many charms. I'm excited to share our adventures with you all!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at our guesthouse. Fatoumata had bought some fresh bread from a local vendor, and we enjoyed it with some strong Malian coffee. After breakfast, we packed our essentials – camera, sunscreen, and of course, insect repellent – and set off to explore Mali National Park.

The park, a sprawling 103-hectare oasis within a larger 2,100-hectare protected forest, is a green lung for the bustling city of Bamako. As we entered, I was immediately struck by the sense of tranquility. The park integrates the National Museum, a botanical garden, and even a zoo into a single cultural and ecological space. It was great to see how the park offered something for everyone, from fitness tracks to nature trails.

Aminata and Ibrahim were thrilled to run around the open spaces, their laughter echoing through the trees. We followed one of the interpretive trails, learning about the local flora and fauna. I was particularly impressed by the variety of indigenous plants, from open lawns to flower gardens, wooded areas, and even a medicinal garden. It was a great opportunity to teach the children about the importance of preserving Mali's natural heritage.

The park's design, which includes entry buildings, a youth and sports center, a restaurant, public toilets, and kiosks all constructed with local stone, was impressive. It blended seamlessly with the environment. We spent a few hours exploring the park, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere and enjoying the beautiful scenery. I even managed to capture some great shots with my camera, although I was kicking myself for forgetting my portable phone charger – my phone battery was already running low!

After our refreshing morning at the park, our stomachs started to rumble. It was time for lunch, and we decided to try West Africa Fried Chicken. I must admit, I was intrigued. Fried chicken has a special place in my heart, and I was curious to see how it would be prepared here in Mali.

The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign. We ordered a generous portion of fried chicken with a side of plantain fries. The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, seasoned with a blend of local spices that gave it a unique and delicious flavor. It was interesting to see how fried chicken, a dish with roots in both Scottish and West African cuisine, has become such a staple in various cultures.

Food is not just fuel; it's an experience, a connection to culture, and a memory in the making.

Aminata and Ibrahim devoured their chicken, declaring it the best fried chicken they had ever tasted. Fatoumata and I agreed; it was a delightful culinary experience. As we savored our meal, I reflected on the history of fried chicken and its significance in African-American culture. It was fascinating to learn how enslaved West Africans brought their culinary traditions to the Americas, where fried chicken eventually became a symbol of comfort and community.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to spend the afternoon at CROC PIZZA NIARELA. I know, I know, pizza after fried chicken might seem like a bit much, but we had heard great things about this place and couldn't resist. Plus, the kids were clamoring for some familiar flavors.

CROC PIZZA NIARELA is located in the lively Niarela district of Bamako. As we approached, we could already smell the aroma of freshly baked pizza. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, perfect for families and friends. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home.

We ordered a variety of pizzas, from the classic Margherita to some more adventurous options with local toppings. The pizzas were made with fresh ingredients and cooked to perfection, each bite bursting with flavor. Aminata and Ibrahim were in pizza heaven, happily munching away. Fatoumata and I enjoyed trying the different flavors, appreciating the blend of Italian culinary traditions with Malian ingredients.

As the sun began to set, we decided to experience Bamako's nightlife. We had heard about a popular maquis called Maquis, known for its vibrant atmosphere and local music. A maquis is a type of open-air bar or restaurant common in West Africa, and I was eager to experience it firsthand.

We arrived at Maquis as the music was starting up. The atmosphere was electric, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the lively ambiance. The decor featured traditional Malian elements, adding to the charm of the venue. We ordered some local drinks and soaked in the vibrant energy of the place.

The music was fantastic, a mix of traditional Malian rhythms and contemporary beats. People were dancing and laughing, creating a sense of community and joy. I even tried my hand at some traditional Malian dance moves, much to the amusement of Aminata and Ibrahim. Fatoumata and I enjoyed chatting with some locals, learning more about Malian culture and traditions.

As the evening drew to a close, we made our way back to our guesthouse, our hearts full of joy and gratitude. Today had been a wonderful exploration of Bamako's diverse offerings, from its natural beauty to its culinary delights and vibrant nightlife. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we are planning to visit the ZOO NATIONAL DU MALI. The kids are super excited to see the animals, and I'm looking forward to learning more about Mali's wildlife. We'll also be having breakfast at Amandine by Sel & Miel, lunch at Bamako Kitchen, and dinner at Chez Thierry. And, if time permits, we might even do some shopping at Bassoum Textile.

Before I sign off, I wanted to share a quick observation about the weather here in Bamako during November. The days are warm, with average high temperatures around 93-95°F. The nights are slightly cooler, with temperatures dropping to the mid-60s. The chance of rain is quite low, making it a great time to visit.

Also, I noticed that there are several conferences taking place in Bamako this November, covering topics ranging from engineering and education to business and economics. It seems like Bamako is becoming a hub for international events and gatherings.

Until tomorrow, *Inchallah* (God willing), and may your own travels be filled with joy and discovery!
