Touching Down in Ziguinchor: The Casamance Adventure Begins

After months of planning and anticipation, my solo journey to Casamance, Senegal, has officially begun! Leaving Montreal behind, I embarked on a long journey to immerse myself in the heart of West Africa. This trip is more than just a vacation; it's a personal quest to connect with a culture rich in history and tradition, a journey I'm eager to share with all of you. My adventure started today in Ziguinchor, the vibrant capital of the Casamance region. From the moment I stepped off the plane, I knew this trip would be something special.

The flight from Dakar was smooth, and as we descended into Ziguinchor Airport (ZIG), I was greeted by the lush, green landscape that defines this region. The air was thick with humidity, a stark contrast to the dry air I'm used to in Montreal, but it was a welcome change. The airport itself was small and efficient, a sign that I was now in a place where life moves at a different pace.

My first order of business was to find transportation to my first stop. I decided to embrace the local way of getting around and hopped into a shared taxi. The driver, a friendly man named Moussa (a popular name, I noticed!), greeted me with a warm smile and helped me with my luggage. As we drove through the city, I couldn't help but notice the vibrant colors of the buildings and the bustling streets filled with people going about their daily lives.

After settling in, my stomach reminded me that I hadn't had a proper meal since breakfast back in Dakar. Following a recommendation from a local I met at the airport, I headed to Café de la plage - Chez Platini - Les pieds dans l’eau for breakfast. Located right on the beach, this charming café offered stunning views of the ocean. I ordered a traditional Senegalese breakfast of Thiéboudienne, a flavorful rice dish with fish, and a cup of strong, sweet coffee. The meal was delicious, and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore created a serene atmosphere. It was the perfect way to start my day and ease into the relaxed pace of Casamance.

After breakfast, I decided to explore the city a bit. My first stop was Diadji Creation, a local clothing store known for its unique designs and vibrant fabrics. As someone who appreciates cultural heritage and enjoys photography, I was immediately drawn to the colorful displays and intricate patterns. I spent a couple of hours browsing through the store, admiring the craftsmanship and chatting with the owner, Diadji. I even picked up a beautiful boubou, a traditional Senegalese robe, as a souvenir for Fatoumata. I know she'll love it! I also thought about Aminata and Ibrahim and how much they would have loved to see all the vibrant colors and patterns.

For lunch, I ventured to Le petit Gourmet, a restaurant recommended for its local cuisine. I decided to try Yassa, a classic Senegalese dish made with chicken or fish marinated in lemon, onions, and spices. The flavors were incredible – tangy, savory, and slightly spicy. It was a true culinary delight!

In the late afternoon, I decided to visit a local artisan shop to learn more about traditional crafts. I found a small workshop where artisans were creating intricate wood carvings and colorful paintings. I spent some time watching them work, fascinated by their skill and dedication. I even tried my hand at carving a small piece of wood, but quickly realized that I lacked the patience and expertise of these talented artisans.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Chez Yande for dinner. This cozy restaurant is known for its authentic Senegalese dishes and warm, welcoming atmosphere. I ordered Thiof, a grilled fish served with a side of couscous and vegetables. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked, and the couscous was light and fluffy. It was the perfect way to end my first day in Casamance. While enjoying my meal, I reflected on the day's experiences and felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to be here.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I took a stroll along the riverfront, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the sounds of the city. I watched as fishermen brought in their daily catch, their silhouettes stark against the darkening sky. The scene was both peaceful and vibrant, a perfect representation of Casamance itself.

Back at my guesthouse, I spent some time writing in my travel journal, capturing the day's events and impressions. I also took the time to connect with Fatoumata and the kids via video call. It was wonderful to see their faces and share my experiences with them. Aminata was especially excited about the boubou I bought for her mother, and Ibrahim wanted to know all about the animals I had seen. I miss them dearly, but I know that this journey is something special, and I'm grateful for their support.

As I prepare for tomorrow, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Abene and the Kalissaye Avifaunal Reserve. I'm looking forward to experiencing more of the natural beauty and cultural richness that Casamance has to offer. I've heard wonderful things about the beaches and the local music scene in Abene, and I'm eager to immerse myself in the local culture. I also hope to spot some of the diverse bird species that inhabit the Kalissaye Avifaunal Reserve.

Today was just the beginning of what I know will be an unforgettable adventure. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region and share my experiences with you all. Stay tuned for more updates from Casamance!
