Dades Valley Delights

Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the raw beauty and warm hospitality of the Dades Valley. Leaving the cozy embrace of our guesthouse, we ventured out to explore the natural wonders that this region of Morocco so generously offers. It was a day filled with striking landscapes, delicious food, and the kind of simple pleasures that make traveling with family so rewarding.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hôtel - Restaurant BOUGAFER. The spread was delightful, featuring local breads, fresh fruit, and strong coffee – the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. Hans particularly enjoyed the local honey, praising its unique floral notes. Sophie, ever the fan of pastries, devoured a croissant with gusto. It's these small moments of culinary delight that often become cherished memories. I made sure to grab an extra bottle of the local honey to bring back to Sarnen; it will be a sweet reminder of our time here.

Fueled and ready, our first stop was La Porte du Dades. The views from here were simply breathtaking. The dramatic gorge stretched out before us, a testament to the power of nature. The colors of the rocks ranged from deep reds and oranges to soft beiges, creating a stunning visual tapestry. We spent some time taking photos, trying to capture the sheer scale and beauty of the landscape, though no photo could truly do it justice. I was reminded of a quote from a Berber guide I once met in the Sahara:

The desert and the mountains teach us to see beauty in simplicity.

Next, we decided to delve deeper into the valley with an official tour guide from Official Tour Guide Gorge Dades. Our guide, a local Berber man named Omar, was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the region. He shared stories of the valley's history, its people, and its unique ecosystem. It was fascinating to learn about the ancient kasbahs that dot the landscape, each one a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the Berber people. Omar explained how the Dades River has shaped the valley over millennia, carving deep gorges and providing life-giving water to the communities that call this place home.

Sophie was particularly interested in the local flora and fauna, peppering Omar with questions about the various plants and animals we encountered. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was fascinated by the traditional irrigation systems, marveling at how the locals have managed to cultivate the land in such an arid environment. For me, the historical significance of the valley was particularly captivating, knowing that it has been a strategic route for trade and travel for centuries, connecting the Sahara Desert to the northern cities of Morocco.

By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. Omar suggested we try Snack Adrar, a local eatery known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was simple but charming, with colorful decor and a welcoming atmosphere. We ordered a variety of dishes, including tagine, couscous, and sandwiches. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Sophie, who is usually a picky eater, surprised us all by devouring a tagine with gusto. Hans enjoyed a hearty stew, while I savored the delicate spices of the couscous. It was a truly satisfying meal, and the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring.

After lunch, we took some time to simply wander through the valley, soaking in the sights and sounds. We passed through small villages, where we were greeted with warm smiles and friendly waves. We saw children playing in the streets, farmers tending to their fields, and artisans crafting intricate carpets and pottery. It was a glimpse into a way of life that is both ancient and timeless.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to treat ourselves to a refreshing drink at maison isabel on the rocks. This unique establishment is perched on a hillside, offering stunning views of the Dades Gorge and the Monkey Fingers rock formations. We sat on the terrace, sipping mint tea and enjoying the panoramic vista. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, with other travelers sharing stories of their adventures in Morocco. Hans struck up a conversation with a fellow carpenter from Switzerland, exchanging tips and techniques on traditional woodworking. Sophie, meanwhile, was engrossed in a book, occasionally glancing up to admire the view. The staff was incredibly welcoming, making us feel like part of their family.

For our final meal of the day, we chose Dar Essalama for dinner. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with traditional Berber decor. We were greeted by Moha, the friendly host, who made us feel right at home. The food was delicious, featuring regional specialties prepared with love and care. We enjoyed a tagine cooked in a traditional clay pot, the flavors enhanced by the slow cooking process. The atmosphere was warm and intimate, a perfect ending to a day of exploration. As we savored our meal, we reflected on all that we had seen and done. The Dades Valley had truly captured our hearts, with its stunning landscapes, its rich culture, and its warm, welcoming people.

As I sit here now, writing this entry, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've shared today. Traveling with family is not always easy, but it is always rewarding. To be able to share these moments of discovery and wonder with Hans and Sophie is a gift beyond measure. Tomorrow, we plan to continue our exploration of the Dades Valley, with visits to Dadès Vallei and Dar Jnan Tiouira Dades on the itinerary. I am eager to see what other treasures this region holds, and to create even more lasting memories with my loved ones. And perhaps, if we are lucky, we might even find another hidden gem like maison isabel on the rocks, a place where the beauty of nature and the warmth of human connection come together in perfect harmony.

The Dades Valley has a way of reminding you what truly matters in life: connection, family, and the simple beauty of the world around us. It’s a lesson I hope to carry with me long after we leave this enchanting place.

I am also reminded that I still need to buy a travel journal, as I forgot to pack it! I must remember to do that tomorrow when we visit BELLE VUE DADES.
