Exploring the Enchanting Dades Valley with Friends
Day 2: Winding Through the Heart of the Dades Gorge: A Day of Breathtaking Beauty
Experience the dramatic landscapes of the Dades Valley with its stunning gorges, hairpin bends, and vibrant Berber culture.
Chasing the Curves of Dades
Today was nothing short of spectacular as we ventured deep into the heart of the Dades Valley. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of our guesthouse, we embarked on a journey that promised dramatic landscapes and a taste of authentic Berber culture. With my camera in hand and a sense of adventure in my heart, I knew this would be a day to remember.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant ANBD. The warm colors and cozy décor made it the perfect spot to fuel up for the day. I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea and local pastries. Maximilian, of course, opted for something a bit heartier, while Amara was content with some fresh fruit. It’s funny how even in a new country, our breakfast habits remain comfortingly the same.

With our bellies full, we set off towards the Gorges du Dadès. The drive itself was an experience, the road winding like a ribbon through the rugged terrain. As we climbed higher, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The Dades River has carved a dramatic path through the mountains, creating a series of gorges with walls ranging from 200 to 500 meters high. The landscape was awash with vibrant colors, from the deep red of the rocks to the lush green of the oases below.

The beauty of the Dades Valley lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but also in the warmth and resilience of its people.
Our first major stop was the famed Tisderine bends. I had seen photos of these hairpin turns, but nothing could have prepared me for the real thing. As we approached, the road twisted and turned, offering panoramic views of the valley below. It was a photographer's dream, and I couldn't resist snapping dozens of photos. Amara was thrilled by the winding roads, though Maximilian looked a bit pale. I think he was relieved when we finally stopped to take in the scenery.

We parked the car and walked to a viewpoint, where we could fully appreciate the scale of the landscape. The bends stretched out before us, each turn revealing a new vista. The autumn sun cast long shadows, accentuating the dramatic contours of the mountains. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight. I made a mental note to practice my Kandyan dance when I returned to Heidelberg, inspired by the landscape.
For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Fatima Berber gorges du dades. This charming spot is nestled right in the heart of the gorges, offering stunning views and delicious food. The aroma of spices filled the air as we stepped inside, and we were immediately greeted by the friendly staff. I ordered a tagine, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Maximilian opted for a grilled meat dish, while Amara enjoyed some fresh fruit. The food was simple but satisfying, and the views were simply unbeatable.

After lunch, we continued our exploration of the Dades Valley. We drove through small Berber villages, each one seemingly untouched by time. The locals were warm and welcoming, always ready with a smile and a wave. I felt a deep sense of connection to this place, a feeling that transcended language and culture. It reminded me of my childhood in Sri Lanka, where hospitality is a way of life.
As the day wore on, we decided to stop for a drink at Café-restaurant Timzzillite Chez Mohamed. This cozy café is perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of the Dades Gorge. We ordered some mint tea and sat outside, soaking in the scenery. The tea was sweet and refreshing, and the atmosphere was incredibly peaceful. It was the perfect way to end a long day of exploring.

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta
Before heading back to our guesthouse, we made one last stop at a local shop. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs to remind me of our time in the Dades Valley. I found some beautiful handwoven carpets and some intricately carved wooden boxes. I also bought some spices to take back to Heidelberg, hoping to recreate some of the delicious Moroccan dishes we had tried. Amara, of course, chose a colorful bracelet.
Dinner was at Cafe restaurant Des Amis. It was a lovely way to reflect on our day. The food was delicious, and the company was even better. I am so grateful for these moments with my friends, sharing laughter and stories in this beautiful corner of the world. I know these are the memories we will cherish for years to come.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but smile. Today was a perfect day, filled with breathtaking beauty, delicious food, and unforgettable experiences. The Dades Valley has captured my heart, and I know I will never forget my time here. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Monkey Paw Mountains and Kefroun (turtle's back). I'm excited to see what new adventures await us.
I'm also excited to visit ORINO SHOP tomorrow. I am thinking of getting some Argan oil to take back home to Heidelberg. I have heard it is great for the skin. I'm sure Amara will want to get some more trinkets to take back as well. I wonder what tomorrow will bring. I will try to remember to pack my sunglasses, which I forgot to bring with me today!
Until then, goodnight from the Dades Valley. I can't wait to share more of our adventures with you all!
