Echoes of Ancient Kyoto
Today was a day of wandering through the heart of old Kyoto, a journey that took us from the serene heights of a historic temple to the bustling, charming streets that whisper tales of centuries past. Aisha was particularly excited, her eyes wide with wonder at every turn. It's moments like these, seeing the world through her eyes, that make these family trips so incredibly special.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura. It’s a cozy place, known for its traditional Kyoto-style dishes. I opted for a set meal featuring fresh fish and seasonal vegetables. The Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option was a delightful surprise, with an array of small, flavorful dishes like pumpkin, taro root, and hijiki seaweed. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. Hans enjoyed a similar set, while Aisha, ever the adventurous eater, tried a bit of everything, declaring the pumpkin her favorite.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of everyday life.
From there, we made our way to Kiyomizu-dera. The temple, perched on the hillside, offered breathtaking views of Kyoto. Founded in 778, its history stretches back over 1250 years. The main hall, a National Treasure, stands as a testament to the temple's enduring legacy. As we walked through the grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace wash over me. The vibrant green of the surrounding trees, the gentle breeze, and the distant hum of the city created a symphony of tranquility.
Experience the serene beauty and spiritual essence of Kiyomizu-dera, an iconic Buddhist temple in Kyoto, renowned for its stunning architecture and breathtaking views.
The wooden stage of Kiyomizu-dera, jutting out 13 meters above the hillside, was particularly impressive. It was built without the use of nails, a feat of engineering that speaks to the ingenuity of the craftsmen of the time. From the stage, we could see the city of Kyoto spread out before us, a tapestry of rooftops and gardens. Aisha was fascinated by the view, pointing out tiny cars and people far below.
We also visited the Otowa Waterfall, located at the base of Kiyomizu-dera's main hall. The water is divided into three separate streams, each said to have a different benefit: longevity, success at school, and a fortunate love life. We each took a sip, hoping for a little bit of everything! Aisha, of course, wanted to try all three, but we explained that it was considered greedy.
Behind the main hall, we discovered Jishu Shrine, dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking. It was a charming little spot, filled with young couples hoping to find their perfect match. Aisha found it amusing, giggling as she watched people try to navigate the “love stones” with their eyes closed.
Leaving Kiyomizu-dera, we strolled down Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, two beautifully preserved historic streets leading away from the temple. These streets are lined with traditional wooden buildings, housing shops, teahouses, and restaurants. It felt like stepping back in time, wandering through these narrow lanes, surrounded by the sights and sounds of old Kyoto. I made sure to tread carefully, remembering the legends that say if you fall on these slopes, you'll have bad luck!

The shops along Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka were filled with local crafts and souvenirs. We stopped at Kyoto Crafts Store. It had everything from key chains to hand-painted fans and swords. Aisha was particularly taken with the colorful kimonos and the delicate porcelain dolls. We picked up a few small gifts for friends back home, wanting to share a piece of Kyoto with them.

For lunch, we ventured into Khaos Spice Diner. It was a welcome change of pace. The restaurant is known for its comforting curry rice. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, with reggae music playing softly in the background. I opted for the Khaos pork keema curry, while Hans tried the chicken curry. Aisha, surprisingly, loved the spice and devoured a small portion of the keema curry. It was a delicious and satisfying meal, a perfect break from the traditional Japanese cuisine we had been enjoying.

In the late afternoon, we made our way to Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION for dinner. It was a special treat, a chance to savor some of the finest beef in the world. The restaurant had a sophisticated ambiance, with a modern yet elegant décor. We were seated at a counter overlooking the teppanyaki grill, where a skilled chef prepared our meal right before our eyes.

We opted for a tasting menu, featuring Kobe sirloin and Kobe filet. The chef expertly grilled the beef to perfection, along with an array of fresh vegetables. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. It was truly a culinary experience to remember. Aisha, though usually not a big meat-eater, was captivated by the performance of the chef and enjoyed the perfectly cooked vegetables.
As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our adventures. From the spiritual heights of Kiyomizu-dera to the charming streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, and the delightful tastes of local cuisine, Kyoto had captivated us with its beauty and history. Aisha, tired but happy, snuggled close to me, her eyes already dreaming of tomorrow's adventures.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Nijō Castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace, and Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. I am particularly looking forward to seeing Nijō Castle, with its stunning architecture and rich history. And perhaps, if we have time, we might even sneak in a visit to Bar K6 for a nightcap. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of exploration in this enchanting city.
This trip is not just about seeing new places; it's about creating lasting memories with my family. It's about experiencing different cultures, trying new foods, and learning together. And most importantly, it's about strengthening the bonds that tie us together, creating a shared history that we will cherish for years to come. As a Senegalese woman living in Germany, it’s important for me to expose Aisha to as many different cultures as possible, so she can grow up with an open mind and a deep appreciation for the world around her.
And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to share my love of travel and culture with my family. Kyoto, with its timeless beauty and rich history, has already left an indelible mark on our hearts. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
