A Day of Discovery in Arashiyama
Today was a day of adventure and cultural immersion in the beautiful Arashiyama district. From playful monkeys to historic streets and serene temples, Kyoto continues to surprise and enchant me. I’m excited to share the highlights of our day with you all!
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Goichi Pizza. Aisha was especially thrilled – a little taste of home with a Japanese twist. Hans and I enjoyed the delicious, stone-oven baked pizza. It was a delightful way to fuel up for our Arashiyama adventures.

Next on our itinerary was the Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama. The climb up the mountain was a bit strenuous, especially with Aisha, but the views of Kyoto were absolutely worth it. And the monkeys! Aisha was in absolute awe. They roamed freely, and we even bought some food to feed them inside a designated area. The monkeys were so gentle and curious, making it a memorable experience for all of us. It was fascinating to see them in their natural habitat, a far cry from a zoo. The panoramic views of Kyoto from the park were simply breathtaking.

Sometimes, the most unforgettable experiences are the ones that take you a little outside your comfort zone.
After our monkey encounter, we strolled down Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street. This historic street transported us back to the Meiji period, with its traditional machiya houses now serving as charming shops and restaurants. The atmosphere was so peaceful and serene, a welcome contrast to the bustling city. We explored the artisan shops, admiring the traditional crafts and unique souvenirs. I found a beautiful hand-painted fan for my mother, a perfect reminder of our trip. Aisha was captivated by the colorful sweets on display, and we indulged in some local treats.

Our exploration continued to Nisonin Temple. This temple, nestled at the foot of Mount Ogura, is known for its connection to the Hyakunin Isshu poem anthology. Nisonin is called Nison-in because it enshrines two deities, Shakyamuni Buddha and Amida Buddha. Emperor Saga initiated the establishment of the temple in the early Heian period. The walk through the temple grounds was incredibly peaceful, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The temple's ancient cemetery, with graves of emperors and members of the aristocracy, added to the sense of history and reverence.

For lunch, we ventured to Hyoto Shijo Karasuma. The restaurant specializes in shabu-shabu, a Japanese hot pot dish. The service was exceptional, and the staff was very helpful in explaining the different courses and ingredients. We opted for the Kyo shabu set, which included a variety of delicious appetizers and premium meats. The interactive cooking process was fun, and the flavors were incredible. Aisha especially enjoyed the yellowtail and broiled mackerel.

After lunch, we did some souvenir shopping at Souvenir Kyoto. I picked up some small trinkets for friends and family back home, little reminders of our time in Kyoto. Aisha chose a cute little kimono doll to add to her collection.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Yoshikawa for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Japanese cuisine and elegant atmosphere. The tempura was exquisite, light and crispy, and the service was impeccable. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and cultural immersion.

Today was extra special because the Meiji Kotokan Hall at the Kyoto National Museum was open to the public for Golden Week. We didn't have time to squeeze it in, but it’s something to consider if you are visiting Kyoto during this time!
As I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Kyoto with my family. Each day brings new adventures and unforgettable memories. Tomorrow is our last day in Kyoto, and we plan to make the most of it. Our itinerary includes a visit to the Kyoto Railway Museum, the Kyoto International Manga Museum, and Nishiki Market. I am especially excited about Nishiki Market, as I have heard it is a food lover's paradise. We might even try to sneak in a visit to the Kyoto Star Bar for a nightcap before we leave.
