A Day of Discovery in Kaziranga

Today was an immersion into the heart of Assam, a day brimming with wildlife encounters, natural beauty, and cultural insights. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of Heidelberg for this solo adventure, I felt a thrill course through me as I anticipated the day's itinerary. It was a day to witness the untamed beauty of Kaziranga, a stark contrast to the structured life I lead translating documents between French, Wolof and German. Today was a day to remember.

The day began early, with a hearty breakfast at Borgos The Wild Haven, Kaziranga. The resort was conveniently located, just a stone's throw from the central zone of Kaziranga National Park.

After a quick bite, I set off for the Kaziranga Jeep Safari, eager to explore the park's famed landscapes.

The crisp morning air was refreshing as the jeep ventured into the park. December in Kaziranga is pleasantly cool, with daytime highs around 24°C and lows around 12°C. I made sure to pack a warm jacket, remembering the chilly mornings my daughter Aisha often complains about during our winter trips back home to Koumpentoum. The terrain was a mix of dense forests and expansive grasslands, a perfect habitat for the park's diverse wildlife.

It wasn't long before we encountered our first one-horned rhinoceros, a majestic creature grazing peacefully in the distance. I raised my binoculars, a crucial item from my pre-departure checklist, and observed it in awe. The guide, knowledgeable and passionate, shared insights about the rhino's behavior and the park's conservation efforts. We spotted several other animals, including deer, wild buffalo, and various bird species, each adding to the vibrant tapestry of Kaziranga's ecosystem.

The true essence of travel is not just seeing new sights, but experiencing new perspectives.

The jeep safari lasted for about two hours, covering a significant portion of the central zone. The open jeep allowed for unobstructed views and an immersive experience, far superior to any wildlife documentary I've ever watched back in Heidelberg. I learned that the park is divided into four ranges: Eastern, Western, Central (where we were), and Burapahar, each offering unique landscapes and wildlife spotting opportunities.

After the exhilarating safari, it was time to head towards Kakochang Waterfall. The waterfall is approximately 13 kilometers from Bokakhat, nestled between Kaziranga National Park and Bokakhat.

The drive itself was scenic, passing through lush tea gardens and quaint Assamese villages. The air was filled with the aroma of tea leaves, a scent so different from the urban air of Heidelberg, and one that took me back to my childhood in Senegal, where the air was always filled with the scent of roasting peanuts or spices.

Reaching Kakochang Waterfall required a short trek, about 3.5 kilometers, through a verdant trail. The path was slightly challenging, with small streams to cross and uneven terrain. I had to be cautious, especially remembering the comfortable, but not-so-reliable, hiking shoes I had chosen for the trip. I was quickly regretting not packing my power adapter, as my phone was already running low on battery, and I wanted to capture every moment of this adventure. Despite the minor inconveniences, the anticipation of seeing the waterfall kept me motivated.

Finally, the Kakochang Waterfall came into view, a mesmerizing cascade of water amidst verdant surroundings. The waterfall is not very high, but the sheer volume of water and the serene atmosphere made it a sight to behold. I took a moment to soak in the natural beauty, the sound of the water a soothing symphony. I could see why this spot is a favorite among locals and tourists alike, a perfect place to unwind and connect with nature.

I learned that the waterfall is also close to the ruins of Numaligarh, adding a historical dimension to the site. The area is surrounded by tea and coffee plantations, offering a picturesque view. I imagined Hans, my husband, enjoying the tranquility of this place, far removed from his software engineering world in Germany. Perhaps next time, I'll bring Aisha and Hans along to experience this natural wonder.

For lunch, I stopped at Jajabor restaurant - Kaziranga. The restaurant had a welcoming atmosphere and a varied menu of Indian cuisine.

I opted for the Assamese thali, eager to taste the local flavors. The meal was a delightful explosion of tastes, from the subtle spices to the rich textures. The staff was friendly and the service was prompt, making it a pleasant dining experience.

I discovered that Jajabor is known for its tasty masala dosa, fish, and paneer. Many reviewers have praised the restaurant's excellent service and reasonable prices. The ambiance was cozy, with a pretty interior decor. I made a mental note to recommend this place to other travelers seeking authentic Assamese cuisine.

The final stop for the day was the Ethnic Village Resort, where I planned to immerse myself in the local culture.

The resort is designed to reflect the heritage of Assamese tribes, offering a unique and immersive experience. The architecture and decor showcased the rich traditions of the region, a stark contrast to the modern aesthetics of many international hotels.

I checked into my room, which was comfortable and well-appointed. The resort offered a range of amenities, including an in-house restaurant, lounge bar, and bonfire arrangements. I decided to explore the resort grounds, taking in the serene atmosphere and the beautiful surroundings.

As the sun began to set, the resort organized a cultural program featuring traditional Assamese music and dance. The performance was captivating, a vibrant display of local artistry. I learned about the different tribes of Assam and their unique customs, gaining a deeper appreciation for the region's cultural diversity. The evening ended with a delicious dinner at the resort's restaurant, savoring the flavors of Assamese cuisine once again.

Before retiring for the night, I made a quick stop at Jungles wine s bar for a nightcap.

The bar had a relaxed ambiance, a perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploration. I sipped on a local beer, reflecting on the day's adventures and the incredible experiences I had gathered.

Tomorrow, I plan to continue my exploration with another jungle safari, this time venturing into a different zone of Kaziranga National Park. I also intend to visit the Kramsa Rock Garden and Camp Nampi, eager to discover more of Assam's natural beauty. I am also hoping to visit the Goodwyn Tea Retail Outlet - Kaziranga to get some local tea. As I drift off to sleep, I feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey, a reminder of the beauty and diversity of our world. This trip is a stark contrast to my daily life in Heidelberg, but it's a welcome change, a chance to reconnect with nature and experience new cultures.

I am already looking forward to tomorrow’s adventure!
