Day 8: A Day Immersed in Hoi An's History and Charm
Exploring Hoi An's ancient houses, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine with family, creating unforgettable memories in Vietnam.
Echoes of the Past in Hoi An
Today was a day of stepping back in time, right in the heart of Hoi An. The ancient town, with its lantern-lit streets and historical buildings, has a way of pulling you into its stories. It's a place where every corner holds a piece of history, and every meal is a taste of local culture. I was excited to explore more of Hoi An’s past with my family.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Tan Phat Restaurant - Hoi An. It's conveniently located, making it an easy choice for starting our day. The restaurant is known for its delicious Vietnamese cuisine and warm hospitality. We enjoyed fresh ingredients in every dish, and the staff's attentiveness made us feel right at home. I opted for a classic *Banh Mi*, while Hans enjoyed a steaming bowl of *Pho*. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

First on our list was the Hoi An Museum. It was amazing to see how well they've preserved all this heritage. The museum gave us a great overview of the town's rich history as a trading port and its cultural influences. It's housed in a charming colonial-style building that reflects the blend of Vietnamese and French architectural styles seen throughout Hoi An. I was particularly drawn to the artifacts and exhibits detailing the lives of early merchants and the town's role in the spice trade. The blend of cultures and the stories of the people who shaped Hoi An were truly captivating. The kids were fascinated by the traditional costumes and old photographs, offering a broad overview of the country's ethnic richness.

Next, we ventured to the house of TRẦN CÔNG HOÀNG, which offered a glimpse into the life of a local artisan. Although not as widely reviewed as some other attractions, it provided a quiet, intimate look at traditional crafts. It was a peaceful interlude, a chance to appreciate the skills and artistry passed down through generations. The intricate details of the artwork and the dedication of the artisans were truly inspiring. It's these smaller, less-known places that often offer the most authentic experiences.

Continuing our historical journey, we visited The Old House of Phung Hung. This nearly 250-year-old house is a perfect example of the architectural fusion that defines Hoi An, blending Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese styles. As we stepped inside, we were mesmerized by the intricate details and well-preserved artifacts. The house has been home to many generations, and each has contributed to its unique character.

Each corner of Hoi An whispers tales of a rich past, inviting you to become part of its ongoing story.
The kids were fascinated by the trap door in the ceiling, a clever design to protect the house from floods. The exterior of the house features a tubular shape with a wide frontage, symbolizing continuous prosperity. The main door has two large, impressive eyes that act as both decoration and a protective charm. We learned about the family's history as merchants and how they adapted the house over time to suit their needs. It was a fascinating insight into the lives of Hoi An's early residents.
For lunch, we stopped at Little Faifo Restaurant, enticed by its promise of a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is set in an ancient house, over 200 years old, adding to its charm. The food was delicious, with a range of Vietnamese dishes that highlighted the local flavors. I tried the *Cao Lau*, a regional specialty, while Hans enjoyed a hearty bowl of *Mi Quang*. The kids loved the spring rolls, and we all agreed that it was one of the best meals we've had so far. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, making our dining experience even more enjoyable.

After a day filled with historical exploration, we decided to unwind at the Market Bar - Market Terrace. Perched atop the Hoi An Fabric Market, this rooftop bar offered panoramic views of the lantern-lit ancient town and the Thu Bon River. It was the perfect spot to relax and soak in the romantic atmosphere of Hoi An. The bar is known for its creative cocktails, and we indulged in a few of their specialties. I tried the Fishbowl Gin & Tonic, while Hans opted for a local beer. The music was a fantastic blend of funky house beats and light jazz, creating a delightfully moody atmosphere.

For dinner, we chose Song thanh Riverside Restaurant, drawn to its cozy riverside setting and delicious-sounding menu. The restaurant offered stunning views of Hoi An Memories Island, adding to the dining experience. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed. We tried a variety of Hoi An specialties, including fried rice with chicken satay skewers and crab fried rolls. The kids were thrilled with the food, and we all agreed that it was a perfect end to a perfect day. As we ate, we enjoyed the music coming from Hoi An Memories Land and watched the lit-up vessels sailing on the river. It was a magical experience that we'll cherish forever.

As the day wound down, we strolled through the lantern-lit streets, soaking in the magical atmosphere of Hoi An. The town was preparing for the full moon, and the lanterns glowed even brighter, casting a warm and inviting light. The air was filled with the scent of incense and the sounds of traditional music. It was a sensory feast that captured the essence of Hoi An. November transforms Hoi An into a magical destination as rainfall decreases significantly.
Reflecting on today's adventures, I'm struck by how much Hoi An has to offer. It's a town that seamlessly blends history, culture, and cuisine, creating a unique and unforgettable experience. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family, and I look forward to discovering more of Hoi An's treasures in the days to come.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Rehahn Gallery to admire the photography, followed by the Museum of Sa Huynh Culture and the Quan Cong Temple. We’re also planning to get some custom-made lanterns at the Hội An Lantern Company. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
Before heading back to our villa, we stopped by a local bakery for a sweet treat. I picked up some mango cakes, a local specialty, and we enjoyed them as we walked along the river. It was a perfect way to end the day, savoring the flavors of Hoi An as we took in the sights and sounds of this magical town. I am also hoping to find Banh Kem ( ice cream ) which are also sold by vendors. There are also places like Highlands Coffee to get desserts. I am also thinking of getting a cake from Hỷ Lâm Môn or The 350F.
