Finding Peace and Beauty in Hoi An

Today was a day of embracing the quieter, more reflective side of Hoi An, a welcome change of pace after the bustling markets and vibrant streets. It was a day filled with gentle exploration, cultural appreciation, and the kind of stunning natural beauty that etches itself into your memory. I felt a deep connection to this land, a sense of belonging that only comes from truly immersing yourself in a place.

Our day began with breakfast at Nhan's Kitchen, a cozy spot recommended by several locals. I opted for the eggplant with lemongrass and tofu, a dish bursting with flavors that were both familiar and new. Hans, ever the adventurous one, tried a traditional Vietnamese noodle soup, which he declared was the perfect way to start the day. It's always a joy to see him embrace the local cuisine with such enthusiasm. As a geriatric nurse, I am always interested in the nutritional aspects of the dishes I sample, and Vietnamese cuisine is certainly one that is both delicious and healthy.

After breakfast, we set off for our Hoi An Ecotour. This wasn't just a sightseeing trip; it was an immersive experience that took us into the heart of the Vietnamese countryside. We learned about traditional farming techniques, rode a water buffalo (much to the amusement of our fellow travelers), and even tried our hand at rowing a basket boat. I have to admit, keeping that little boat balanced was a lot harder than it looked! It reminded me of my childhood in Buon Ma Thuot, where life was simpler and more connected to nature. It was wonderful to share this experience with Hans, showing him a glimpse of the Vietnam I grew up in.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, like watching the sunset paint the sky with vibrant colors or sharing a meal with loved ones.

The ecotour was not only fun but also educational. We learned about the importance of sustainable tourism and how it can help preserve the local culture and environment. It's something that's very close to my heart, and I'm always looking for ways to travel more responsibly. I made sure to bring my reusable water bottle, though I did forget my mosquito repellent again! I really need to add that to my packing list for tomorrow. I am pleased to see the emphasis many local businesses place on sustainability.

For lunch, we ventured to Bun Cha Ta Hoi An, a restaurant that specializes in bun cha, a Hanoian specialty of grilled pork with vermicelli noodles. It was absolutely delicious! The pork was perfectly charred and flavorful, and the noodles were light and refreshing. Hans and I shared a plate of seafood spring rolls, which were crispy and savory. The owner, Katy, was incredibly welcoming and took the time to explain how to properly eat bun cha. It's these small interactions that make traveling so rewarding.

After lunch, we decided to explore Diep Dong Nguyen House, an ancient house that has been converted into a museum. Built in the late 19th century for a wealthy Chinese merchant, the house offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Hoi An's past residents. The architecture is a blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese styles, and the interior is filled with antique furniture, ceramics, and photographs. I was particularly intrigued by the collection of old coins, some of which dated back to the 10th century. It's amazing to think about the history that these objects have witnessed.

Before heading back to our villa, we stopped by Reaching Out Arts & Crafts, a fair-trade artisan market that supports people with disabilities. I was deeply moved by the beautiful handcrafted items on display, each piece telling a story of resilience and creativity. We purchased a few small gifts for our family back in Berlin, knowing that we were supporting a worthy cause. It's heartwarming to see organizations like Reaching Out empowering individuals and preserving traditional crafts.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to the Sunset View Point. We chose to go to Cua Dai Bridge, a spot recommended for its panoramic views of the river, mountains, and coastline. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, the sky exploded in a riot of colors – oranges, pinks, and purples. It was a breathtaking sight, one that filled me with a sense of peace and gratitude. Hans and I sat in comfortable silence, simply taking in the beauty of the moment.

For dinner, we decided to try Red Gecko Restaurant, drawn in by the aroma of grilled meats. We shared a plate of My Quang noodles, fried wontons, and BBQ fish in banana leaf. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was lively and fun. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm reminded of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things in life. Hoi An has a way of doing that to you. It's a place that nourishes the soul and awakens the senses. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Hoi An Yellow Wall, Hoi An Sculpture Promenade, and Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us.
