Exploring Hoi An's iconic yellow walls, art scene, and ancestral history, topped off with delicious food and a lively pub visit.
A Day of Discovery in Hoi An
Today was another beautiful day in Hoi An, filled with vibrant colours, fascinating history, and delicious food. I felt a deeper connection to my roots as I explored this charming town with my family. It was a day of simple pleasures and cultural immersion, reminding me why I love sharing these experiences with all of you.
Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at Tin Tin Restaurant-Bar. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, perfect for starting the day. I enjoyed a traditional Vietnamese coffee while Hans and the kids tried some of the local breakfast specialties. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the English menu made it easy for us to navigate the options. It’s always a treat to find a place that caters to both local and international tastes. I made sure to try the rice pancakes, a local specialty, while Hans enjoyed a hearty bowl of pho. Feeling energized, we set out to explore the town.
Our first stop was the iconic Hoi An Yellow Wall. These walls are more than just a pretty backdrop; they encapsulate the city's rich history and cultural essence. Walking through the narrow alleys, adorned in vibrant yellow hues, felt like stepping back in time. The sunlight danced on the walls, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. I couldn't resist taking countless photos, trying to capture the beauty and charm of this unique place. The kids had fun posing against the walls, their laughter echoing through the streets. It's amazing how a simple colour can evoke such a sense of history and culture.

Next, we strolled along the Hoi An sculpture promenade. This vibrant hub of activity was filled with stunning sculptures created by local and international artists. Each sculpture told a unique story, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of Vietnam. The kids were fascinated by the different shapes and forms, running around and pointing out their favourite pieces. The promenade was bustling with people, adding to the lively atmosphere. It was a perfect place to take a break and enjoy the beauty of art in a public space. I was particularly impressed by the blend of traditional Vietnamese artistry with contemporary influences.

After immersing ourselves in art, we decided to delve into the history of Hoi An by visiting the Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel. This ancestral temple and memorial house is dedicated to the Nguyen Tuong family, known for their academic tradition. The chapel has preserved numerous documents, including genealogy books, dating back centuries. As I walked through the chapel, I felt a deep connection to my Vietnamese heritage. It was humbling to learn about the family's contributions to Vietnamese literature and history. The intricate wood carvings and traditional architecture were a testament to the family's legacy. The kids were surprisingly engaged, asking questions about our ancestors and learning about their achievements. It was a valuable lesson in history and culture for all of us. The chapel’s serene atmosphere provided a peaceful contrast to the bustling streets outside.

For lunch, we headed to Hai Cafe Courtyard BBQ & Restaurant in Hoi An Old Town. This restaurant is housed in a traditional Hoi An shop house and specializes in traditional Hoi An dishes. The spacious garden courtyard was a welcome escape from the midday heat. We enjoyed a delicious barbecue, watching the chefs in action in the open-air kitchen. The kids devoured the grilled meats, while Hans and I savoured the traditional Vietnamese dishes. The emphasis is on serving great food in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. The nightly barbecue offers a tasty range of fresh seafood and meats cooked with fresh herbs, and served with Vietnamese and international sauces. It was the perfect spot to refuel and recharge before continuing our exploration.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to experience Hoi An's nightlife. We stopped by The Shamrock Irish Pub Hoi An. It’s always interesting to see how different cultures blend, and this Irish pub in the heart of Vietnam was a unique experience. The pub had a lively atmosphere, with live music and a mix of locals and tourists. Hans enjoyed a pint of Guinness, while I tried a local Vietnamese beer. The kids sipped on some soft drinks, enjoying the music and the energetic vibe. It was a fun way to end the day, experiencing a different side of Hoi An.

Today was particularly special because it allowed me to share my heritage with my family in a tangible way. Seeing my children connect with Vietnamese history and culture was incredibly rewarding. It reinforced the importance of these journeys, not just as a break from our daily routine, but as opportunities for learning and growth.
I couldn't help but reflect on how much Hoi An has changed since I was a child. While the ancient town has retained its charm, it has also embraced modernity, becoming a popular tourist destination. It's a delicate balance, preserving the past while adapting to the present. I'm grateful that places like the Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel exist, reminding us of our roots and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Hoi An Rice Fields, cycle through the countryside, visit the Old House of Tan Ky, and relax on Cua Dai Beach. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this beautiful town. I also plan to buy some art at the Nam Trân Art Craft Village.
As I sit here writing this, I can still hear the echoes of laughter, the vibrant colours of the yellow walls, and the tantalizing aroma of Vietnamese cuisine. Hoi An has a way of capturing your heart and leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime. I am especially appreciative to be able to share this experience with Hans and the kids.
Until tomorrow,
