Unexpected Detour: Discovering Tetouan's Charm

Today's adventure took an unexpected turn, whisking us away from the familiar blue hues of Chefchaouen to the intriguing city of Tetouan. While I had initially planned a more relaxed day, the allure of exploring another facet of Moroccan culture proved too tempting to resist. I was eager to see what treasures and stories this historic city held, especially with my friends by my side.

Our morning began, as always, with a delightful breakfast at Café & restaurant Meftah. It's quickly becoming a tradition to start our days with Moroccan coffee and pastries, fueling us for the adventures ahead. I must admit, the cozy atmosphere and friendly service at Meftah set the perfect tone for the day.

After breakfast, we hopped into our trusty rental car and set off towards Tetouan, a drive that promised scenic views of the Moroccan landscape.

Arriving in Tetouan, the change of scenery was immediately apparent. Unlike the uniformly blue-washed Chefchaouen, Tetouan presented a more diverse palette, a mix of traditional Moroccan architecture with hints of Spanish influence, a testament to its complex history. Our first stop was the old Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site. I was immediately struck by the bustling atmosphere, the narrow, winding streets teeming with life. It felt like stepping back in time, a maze of shops, workshops, and hidden courtyards.

We spent hours wandering through the Medina, getting delightfully lost in its labyrinthine alleys. Every corner revealed something new: a craftsman hammering away at intricate metalwork, a vendor selling vibrant spices, children playing in the squares. I found myself particularly drawn to the leather goods, the craftsmanship on display was truly remarkable. I even picked up a small leather pouch for Hans, knowing he'd appreciate the quality and the story behind it. My friends were equally captivated, each finding their own unique souvenirs and treasures.

Sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones you don't plan, the spontaneous detours that lead you to unexpected discoveries.

For lunch, we decided on Mandala, a restaurant recommended for its Italian cuisine with a Moroccan twist. It was a welcome change of pace, and the food was delicious. I opted for a pasta dish with local spices, a fusion of flavors that perfectly captured the essence of our trip. My friends enjoyed pizzas and salads, all made with fresh, local ingredients. The atmosphere was lively, the staff friendly, and the overall experience was a delightful culinary interlude in our day of exploration.

After lunch, we ventured to the Tetuan Modern Art Center. As someone who appreciates modern art, I was eager to see how Moroccan artists were expressing themselves. The center itself was a striking building, a blend of modern design with traditional Moroccan elements. Inside, the exhibits were diverse and thought-provoking, showcasing a range of mediums from painting and sculpture to digital art. I was particularly impressed by the works of several emerging Moroccan artists, their pieces reflecting a unique perspective on Moroccan culture and society. It was inspiring to see how they were using art to challenge norms and express their identities.

One exhibit that particularly resonated with me was a series of photographs exploring the theme of cultural identity. As someone who has navigated the complexities of living between two cultures, Vietnamese and German, I found the artist's perspective deeply moving. It reminded me of my own journey, the challenges and joys of embracing both my heritage and my adopted home.

Before leaving Tetouan, we made a quick stop at Hibart Souvenirs Shop. I wanted to find a small memento to remember our day in this fascinating city. The shop was filled with an array of handcrafted items, from ceramics and textiles to jewelry and woodwork. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl, its vibrant colors and intricate design a perfect representation of Tetouan's artistic spirit. I think it will look great in our Berlin apartment, adding a touch of Moroccan flair to our home.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Chefchaouen, the blue city welcoming us with its familiar charm. Reflecting on our day in Tetouan, I realized how much I had learned and experienced in such a short time. From the bustling Medina to the thought-provoking art center, Tetouan had offered a glimpse into a different side of Morocco, a city where history and modernity intertwine, where tradition and innovation coexist. I am so glad that we decided to take this detour, it was a truly enriching experience.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Chefchaouen, visiting Jamaa and Bab El Hammar, and perhaps enjoying a relaxing evening at Galitos. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of our day in Tetouan, a city that has captured my heart with its unexpected charm. As I prepare for bed, I realize I forgot my sunglasses and notebook for journaling, but I will buy new ones tomorrow, hopefully.

This trip has been such a blessing, allowing me to reconnect with my love for travel, to explore new cultures, and to share these experiences with my dear friends. As a geriatric nurse in Berlin, my days are often filled with routine and responsibility. This journey to Morocco has been a welcome escape, a chance to recharge and rediscover the beauty and wonder of the world. I am grateful for every moment, every encounter, and every unexpected detour. I am looking forward to the next day of our adventure!

I am also reminded of something Hans often says, "The best stories are found between the pages of a passport." Indeed, Morocco is writing a beautiful chapter in my travel journal, a chapter filled with vibrant colors, rich flavors, and unforgettable memories.
