A Day of Discovery in the Blue City

Today in Chefchaouen was nothing short of magical. Immersing myself in the heart of this blue-washed city, I explored its rich culture, tasted its unique flavors, and connected with the local artisans. It's days like these that remind me why I traded the predictable comfort of my nursing job in Berlin for the unpredictable beauty of travel. Come along as I share the day's adventures, from the bustling medina to the quiet corners of the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Triana. The terrace was already buzzing with early risers, a mix of locals and tourists eager to start their day. I opted for one of their breakfast set menus, which included eggs, a warm croissant, olives, and homemade jam. It was simple, delicious, and just what I needed to fuel my explorations. The strong coffee was definitely the best I've had so far here in Chefchaouen.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out to join Blue Medina Tours. I had heard wonderful things about their insightful walks through the city, and I was keen to delve deeper into Chefchaouen's history and culture. Luckily, I was able to book a tour on the spot.

Our guide, a local with a wealth of knowledge and a contagious enthusiasm, led us through the labyrinthine streets of the medina. He shared stories of the city's founding, its role as a refuge for those fleeing persecution, and the origins of its iconic blue hue. As we wandered, I couldn't help but marvel at the intricate details of the architecture, the vibrant colors of the textiles, and the friendly faces of the people we encountered. It was a feast for the senses, and I found myself completely captivated by the city's charm.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its picturesque streets, but in the warmth and resilience of its people.

Next on the agenda was the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen. Housed within the Kasbah, this museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the region's cultural heritage. I was particularly drawn to the exhibits showcasing traditional costumes, musical instruments, and ancient weapons. It was a reminder of the diverse influences that have shaped Chefchaouen over the centuries, from Berber and Arab to Andalusian.

The museum is located in the Kasbah, which was built in the 15th century. In addition to the Ethnographic Museum, the Kasbah also has a garden, fountains, and patios. The Kasbah has been restored several times over the centuries. During its history, it has been used as a residence for governors, as a military arsenal and as a prison. The cost to enter the museum is 6€ (60 Dhs) for foreign visitors.

After soaking up the history and culture, it was time for lunch. Restaurant Ali Baba beckoned with its promise of authentic Moroccan cuisine and a separate vegan menu, which caught my eye immediately. I settled in at a cozy table and ordered a flavorful tagine, brimming with vegetables and aromatic spices. It was a delightful culinary experience, and I savored every bite.

With renewed energy, I ventured into the heart of Chefchaouen's shopping district, eager to explore the local crafts and souvenirs. My mission: to find the perfect copper lamp to bring a touch of Moroccan magic back to my apartment in Berlin. I spent hours browsing the various shops, admiring the intricate designs and haggling with the friendly vendors. The Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted items, each one a testament to the skill and artistry of the local artisans.

I did find a lamp that I liked, but I decided to keep looking around. There were so many beautiful things available. The textiles were colorful, the pottery was unique, and the metal and woodwork were intricately designed. I was able to find a few smaller items as gifts for my friends back home.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the blue city, it was time for dinner. Restaurant Hamsa, known for its rooftop terrace and vegetarian-friendly menu, was the perfect choice. I climbed the stairs to the terrace and was rewarded with breathtaking views of Chefchaouen's iconic blue houses. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation, and I felt a sense of belonging wash over me.

I ordered a selection of vegetarian dishes, including falafel, hummus, and a refreshing mint tea. The food was delicious, but it was the atmosphere that truly made the experience special. Sharing stories and laughter with fellow travelers as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, was a moment I'll never forget.

Tonight, as I reflect on the day's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this enchanting city. Chefchaouen has a way of capturing your heart and leaving you wanting more. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit Park Sidi Abdelhamid and stroll along Boulevard Mohamed V, and maybe even pop into Cafe Clock for a drink.

Spending my days like this with friends makes me feel like I'm exactly where I need to be. As a geriatric nurse back in Berlin, I'm used to taking care of others, but this trip is about taking care of myself and experiencing new things. I'm so glad I made the decision to come here, even if Hans misses me terribly. I promised him I'd bring back lots of stories and maybe even a blue-themed souvenir for our living room.

This journey is far from over, and I can't wait to see what other treasures await me in this beautiful corner of the world. Good night from Chefchaouen!
