First Impressions of the Blue Pearl

After a long journey from Berlin, I finally arrived in Chefchaouen, the famed Blue City of Morocco. The stories and photos I’d seen couldn't quite prepare me for the immersive experience of being here. Today was all about wandering, tasting, and soaking in the unique atmosphere of this mountain gem. I'm excited to share my first impressions and adventures with you all.

Our journey from Tangier was smooth, offering picturesque views of the Rif Mountains. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the bustling city life I'm used to. Arriving at Hotel Casa Miguel, I was immediately charmed by its cozy ambiance and traditional Moroccan decor. After settling in, my friends and I were eager to dive into the heart of Chefchaouen – the Medina.

A Blue Awakening in the Medina

The Chefchaouen Medina is unlike any place I've ever seen. Every building, every alleyway, is painted in varying shades of blue, creating a surreal and calming effect. As someone who appreciates art and unique aesthetics, I was instantly captivated. The gentle hues seemed to shift with the sunlight, offering a new perspective at every turn. I couldn't resist snapping photos at every corner – I'm sure my Instagram will be flooded with blue for the next few days!

We started our exploration without a specific plan, simply letting the winding streets guide us. The Medina is a maze of narrow alleyways, each turn revealing artisan shops, vibrant textiles, and the friendly faces of locals. It's easy to get lost, but that’s part of the charm. We stumbled upon hidden courtyards, each a little oasis of tranquility amidst the bustling market. I picked up a few small souvenirs – a hand-painted ceramic bowl and a beautifully woven scarf – reminders of this unique place.

A Taste of Morocco at Cafe Clock

For breakfast, we headed to Cafe Clock, a place recommended by several blogs and travel guides. The cafe is a vibrant spot, with a mix of tourists and locals enjoying the morning air. I ordered a traditional Moroccan breakfast – harsha, msemen, amlou, honey, jam, cheese, OJ, and of course, mint tea. The msemen and harsha were particular highlights, and the mint tea was the perfect way to start the day. The cafe itself is spread over several floors, offering panoramic views of the Medina. I could easily spend hours here, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the delicious food.

Exploring the Historic Kasbah

After breakfast, we made our way to the Kasbah, a 15th-century fortress located in the heart of the Medina. The Kasbah was built by Moulay Ali ibn Rashid to defend the town against invasions and now houses an ethnographic museum showcasing the history and culture of the Chefchaouen region. The architecture is a beautiful example of Andalusian style, with intricately carved wooden doors and colorful tiles.

Walking through the Kasbah, I felt a sense of stepping back in time. The museum offered a glimpse into the region's past, with displays of antique weapons, musical instruments, and photographs of the old town. The lush gardens surrounding the Kasbah provided a peaceful escape, and the panoramic views of Chefchaouen and the Rif Mountains were simply breathtaking. It's a must-visit for anyone interested in the history and culture of this unique city.

Lunch with a View at Restaurant Bab Ssour

For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant Bab Ssour, tucked away in a small alley in the Medina. This place is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and cozy atmosphere. We sat on comfortable couches, surrounded by blue and white windows with green trim, feeling like we were dining in a local's home. I ordered a tagine with chicken and vegetables, a classic Moroccan dish that never disappoints. The flavors were rich and aromatic, and the portion was generous. My friends tried the couscous and a vegetarian soup, both of which were equally delicious. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making the experience even more enjoyable. It was the perfect spot to relax and refuel before continuing our exploration.

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are made when you simply allow yourself to get lost.

The Serenity of Ras El Ma

In the late afternoon, we ventured to Ras El Ma, a natural spring located on the edge of the Medina. The spring is a source of fresh water for the town and a popular spot for locals to gather and relax. The sound of the water flowing through the rocks created a soothing atmosphere, a welcome contrast to the bustling Medina. We watched as women washed clothes in the stream, children played, and families enjoyed picnics by the water. It was a glimpse into the daily life of the people of Chefchaouen.

While the eateries near the river and waterfall might seem picturesque, I've read that the food there can be disappointing. So, we simply enjoyed the scenery and the refreshing atmosphere without stopping for a meal. It was a perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

Shopping for Treasures at Blue. concept store

Before dinner, we decided to do some more shopping. We stopped by Blue. concept store, a charming shop known for its unique Moroccan gifts and artisanal treasures. The store is a treasure trove of handcrafted jewelry, intricate textiles, and beautifully designed home decor. Each piece tells a story, reflecting the rich artistry of Morocco. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, offering insights into the products and sharing tips about the local culture. I found a beautiful hand-painted jewelry box, a perfect memento of my time in Chefchaouen.

Dinner at Chez Hicham

For our first dinner in Chefchaouen, we chose Chez Hicham, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Moroccan dishes and cozy ambiance. The restaurant is located in the heart of the Medina and offers a mix of Moroccan and international cuisine. The menu is extensive with a variety of tagines and couscous dishes, as well as seafood and grilled meats. I decided to try the Moroccan-style chicken tacos, which were a unique and delicious twist on a classic dish. My friends ordered a tagine and a grilled fish, both of which were excellent. The service was attentive, and the prices were reasonable. It was a perfect way to end our first day in Chefchaouen.

Reflections on a Blue Day

As I sit here, writing this blog post from our cozy hotel room, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences of today. Chefchaouen has exceeded all my expectations. The blue-washed streets, the friendly locals, the delicious food – it's all been a feast for the senses. I’m already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to hike to Plaza Uta el Hamman and Grande Cascade D'akchour. The weather forecast looks promising, and I can't wait to see what other hidden gems this Blue City has in store for us. I'm also excited to try out Bar Oum Rabie tomorrow night!

Tonight, though, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventures in the Blue Pearl of Morocco. Stay tuned for more updates!
