Kyoto's Unexpected Charms
Today was a delightful mix of old and new, a true reflection of Kyoto's character. It's amazing how this city manages to blend historical reverence with modern innovation, creating a unique tapestry that captivates at every turn. Hans and I, along with the rest of the family, set out to explore some of Kyoto's less-trodden paths, and we were rewarded with experiences that were both enriching and incredibly fun.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Komefuku. I had read rave reviews about their traditional Japanese breakfast sets, and I was eager to try it out. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm ambiance that made us feel right at home. I chose the set that included grilled fish, miso soup, and an assortment of small, flavorful side dishes. Hans opted for the rice porridge, a comforting and nourishing start to the day. The kids enjoyed the tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) and some perfectly steamed rice. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

Next on our agenda was the Kyoto Railway Museum. I must admit, I wasn't initially thrilled about visiting a train museum. However, Hans and the children were really keen, and I always try to keep an open mind when traveling. To my surprise, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the experience. The museum is vast and well-organized, showcasing the history of Japan's railway system through a fascinating collection of locomotives, carriages, and interactive exhibits. The kids were absolutely thrilled, clambering aboard the trains and pretending to be conductors. Even I was impressed by the sleek design of the Shinkansen bullet trains and the intricate mechanics of the steam engines. It was a fantastic way to learn about Japan's technological advancements and the role of railways in the country's development.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
After immersing ourselves in the world of trains, we decided to ascend the Kyoto Tower. Standing tall near Kyoto Station, it offers panoramic views of the city. The observation deck provided a breathtaking 360-degree vista, allowing us to spot landmarks we had already visited and plan our adventures for the remaining days. The kids were excited to point out the temples and gardens they recognized from our previous excursions. Although it was a bit chilly, the clear winter air allowed for excellent visibility, making the experience all the more memorable. I even managed to snap some beautiful photos of the city skyline, which I know I'll treasure for years to come.

For lunch, we ventured to Anzukko, a charming little gyoza restaurant tucked away in a quiet alley. The restaurant was small and intimate, with a cozy atmosphere that made us feel like we were dining in someone's home. The owner was incredibly welcoming, and he guided us through the menu, recommending some of his specialties. We ordered a variety of gyoza, each with its own unique flavor profile. The tetsunabe gyoza, served in a sizzling cast-iron pot, were a particular highlight, with a crispy, golden-brown crust and a juicy, flavorful filling. The kids devoured the steamed prawn and scallop dumplings, while Hans and I savored the more adventurous options, like the umeboshi and shiso gyoza, which had a delightful tangy flavor. It was a delicious and satisfying meal that perfectly captured the essence of Kyoto's culinary scene.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we made our way to Shimogamo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site nestled in a tranquil forest. As we approached the shrine, we were immediately struck by the sense of serenity that permeated the air. The towering trees of Tadasu no Mori provided a natural canopy, filtering the sunlight and creating a peaceful, almost mystical atmosphere. We strolled along the winding paths, admiring the ancient trees and the moss-covered stones. The shrine itself was a masterpiece of traditional Japanese architecture, with its elegant wooden structures and gracefully curved roofs. We took our time exploring the various halls and gardens, pausing to admire the intricate details and soak in the tranquil ambiance.

I found myself particularly drawn to the Kawai Shrine, dedicated to the god of beauty. As someone who works in geriatric care, I'm constantly reminded of the importance of inner beauty and the resilience of the human spirit. The shrine sold votive tablets in the shape of mirrors, which worshippers could illustrate with their own likeness in order to attain beauty in their hearts, as well as their faces. I bought one for myself, and as I carefully drew my reflection, I thought about the lessons I've learned from the elderly people I care for. Their wisdom, their strength, and their unwavering spirit are a constant source of inspiration to me.
Before leaving Shimogamo Shrine, we visited the Aioi Shrine, dedicated to the god of good marriage. Hans and I paused to offer a prayer for our continued happiness and well-being. As we stood there, holding hands, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the love and support we share. Our journey to Kyoto has brought us even closer together, and I know that the memories we're creating here will last a lifetime.
Our final stop of the day was Kyoto Yaoichi Honkan, a renowned grocery store known for its high-quality produce and local specialties. The store was a feast for the senses, with colorful displays of fresh fruits, vegetables, and artisanal products. We wandered through the aisles, marveling at the variety of ingredients and sampling some of the local delicacies. We picked up some Kyoto-style pickles, roasted green tea, and traditional sweets to take back to our hotel. I was particularly impressed by the store's commitment to sustainable living, with locally sourced meat and fish and even a rooftop farm. It's inspiring to see businesses that prioritize quality and environmental responsibility.

For dinner, we decided to try Sakuragawa, a Kaiseki restaurant nearby our hotel. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a serene atmosphere that was perfect for a special occasion. The chef, Satoshi Yamamoto, clearly valued traditional Japanese cuisine while also showcasing a cooking approach that maximizes the flavors of the carefully selected seasonal ingredients, which are then used to craft dishes that emphasize the essence of each season. The restaurant also had a variety of wines that complemented the menu, as well as a selection of 15 to 20 types of sake, ranging from exclusive and rare options to popular choices like Dassai. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploring Kyoto's hidden gems.

I'm so glad we decided to come to Kyoto in February. The weather has been surprisingly mild, and the crowds have been manageable, allowing us to fully appreciate the city's beauty and charm. Plus, there are so many unique events and festivals taking place this month, like the Kitano Tenmangu Ume Matsuri, which celebrates the plum blossoms, and the Setsubun festivals, which mark the changing of the seasons. It's been a truly immersive and unforgettable experience.
