A Day of Vistas and Vibrant Culture

Today in Kyoto was a beautiful blend of panoramic views and traditional arts. It's amazing how much this city has to offer, and I'm so excited to share my experiences with you all. I felt a deep connection to the city today, from the heights of Shogunzuka Mound, each moment was a new discovery.

Our day began with a hearty Japanese breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. It was a delightful start, fueling us up for a day of exploration. Hans particularly enjoyed the grilled fish, while I savored the tamagoyaki. It reminded me of the simple, comforting breakfasts my mother used to make in Buon Ma Thuot.

Ascending to Shogunzuka Mound

Our first stop was the Shogunzuka Mound. The journey to the top was an adventure in itself, and as we ascended, the city slowly unfolded beneath us. Reaching the summit, the view was simply breathtaking. From this vantage point, Kyoto sprawled out before us, a tapestry of ancient temples, modern buildings, and lush greenery. I could see why Emperor Kammu chose this spot centuries ago; it truly feels like the guardian of the city. The crisp February air added to the clarity of the vista, making it a perfect morning.

The panoramic view from Shogunzuka Mound is a reminder of Kyoto's enduring beauty and historical significance.

The history of Shogunzuka is fascinating. Learning about Emperor Kammu's decision to bury a statue of a shogun here to protect Kyoto added a layer of depth to the experience. The site felt imbued with centuries of history and a palpable sense of peace. We spent a good hour just soaking in the views and reflecting on the city's rich heritage. Hans, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the structural aspects of the observation deck, while I was more captivated by the spiritual aura of the place.

Tranquility in Maruyama Park

Next, we ventured to Maruyama Park, a serene oasis in the heart of Kyoto. The park was alive with the subtle signs of early spring. Though the famed cherry blossoms were still weeks away, the plum blossoms were just beginning to bloom, adding delicate splashes of color to the landscape. I could already imagine how stunning this place would be when the sakura are in full bloom.

Wandering through the park, we came across ponds, bridges, and meticulously manicured gardens. It was a perfect place for a leisurely stroll, offering a respite from the bustling city. We paused by the iconic weeping cherry tree, imagining its full splendor in the coming weeks. I made a mental note to return in late March or early April to witness the full spectacle.

The park had a lively atmosphere, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the tranquility. We saw families picnicking, couples strolling hand-in-hand, and artists capturing the scenery on canvas. It was a beautiful reminder of how nature can bring people together, no matter their background or beliefs.

Lunch at Yoshikawa

For lunch, we indulged in a traditional tempura meal at Yoshikawa. This restaurant is known for its exquisite tempura and kaiseki cuisine, and it did not disappoint. Each piece of tempura was a work of art, lightly battered and perfectly fried. The flavors were delicate and refined, showcasing the freshest seasonal ingredients. The presentation was impeccable, reflecting the attention to detail that is so characteristic of Japanese cuisine.

Hans and I shared a set menu, savoring each course. The tempura ochazuke was a particular highlight, a comforting and flavorful dish that perfectly encapsulated the essence of Yoshikawa's style. The setting was equally delightful, with the restaurant overlooking a beautiful Japanese garden. It was a truly immersive dining experience, engaging all the senses.

Gion Corner: A Showcase of Traditional Arts

In the afternoon, we made our way to Gion Corner, eager to experience a showcase of traditional Japanese arts. Gion, known as Kyoto's geisha district, has an enchanting atmosphere, and walking through its streets felt like stepping back in time. The wooden machiya houses, the narrow alleyways, and the soft glow of lanterns created a magical ambiance.

Gion Corner offers a sampler of various traditional arts, including a tea ceremony, kyomai dance, ikebana (flower arrangement), and bunraku puppet theater. The performances were captivating, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Kyoto. The tea ceremony was a serene and meditative experience, while the kyomai dance was graceful and mesmerizing. The bunraku puppet theater was particularly impressive, with the puppeteers bringing the characters to life with incredible skill and artistry.

It was fascinating to see these ancient art forms preserved and celebrated in the heart of modern Kyoto. The performances were a testament to the city's commitment to preserving its traditions while embracing the future. For me, it was particularly touching to see elements of performance that reminded me of traditional Vietnamese theater, a connection to my own cultural heritage.

Dinner at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO

As evening approached, we headed to THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO for dinner. This restaurant, housed in a beautifully restored traditional building, offers a unique dining experience. The ambiance was elegant and refined, with a touch of history and charm. The restaurant was once the residence of a renowned Japanese painter, and the building's architecture and design reflected its artistic heritage.

The Italian cuisine at THE SODOH was a delightful surprise, blending traditional Italian flavors with Japanese ingredients and techniques. The menu was creative and innovative, with each dish a work of art. We opted for the tasting menu, allowing us to sample a variety of the restaurant's signature dishes. The pasta was perfectly al dente, the seafood was incredibly fresh, and the desserts were decadent and satisfying. It was a truly memorable meal, showcasing the culinary creativity of Kyoto.

Rocking the Night Away

To cap off the evening, we decided to check out Rocking Bar ING, a local bar recommended by some fellow travelers. The bar was a bit hidden, tucked away on a side street, but it was well worth the effort to find. As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted by a blast of rock music and a lively atmosphere. The owner, Hako, was a true music fanatic, with an encyclopedic knowledge of rock and roll.

The bar was small and cozy, with walls covered in rock memorabilia. It felt like stepping into a time capsule, with vintage posters, album covers, and concert tickets adorning every surface. Hako was a gracious host, making us feel welcome and introducing us to some of the regulars. We spent the evening listening to classic rock tunes, chatting with fellow music lovers, and enjoying the convivial atmosphere.

It was a fun and unexpected way to end the day, adding a touch of rock and roll to our cultural exploration of Kyoto. Hans, a bit of a closet rocker himself, was in his element, requesting songs from his favorite bands. I enjoyed the energy of the place, a refreshing contrast to the more serene experiences of the day.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the diversity and richness of Kyoto. From the panoramic views of Shogunzuka to the tranquil gardens of Maruyama Park, from the traditional arts of Gion Corner to the culinary delights of Yoshikawa and THE SODOH, and finally, the vibrant music scene at Rocking Bar ING, Kyoto offers something for everyone. It's a city that seamlessly blends the ancient and the modern, the serene and the lively, the traditional and the innovative. And as we prepare for another day of exploration tomorrow, with visits to the Kyoto Railway Museum, Kyoto Tower, and Shimogamo Shrine, I am filled with anticipation for what new discoveries await us. Tomorrow promises a journey through time and tradition, and I can't wait to share it with you all.

I'm also looking forward to visiting Kyoto Yaoichi Honkan tomorrow, a local shop that I've heard offers a unique glimpse into the daily life of Kyoto residents. It's these small, authentic experiences that truly make a trip memorable. And of course, we have reservations at Komefuku for breakfast, Anzukko for lunch, and Sakuragawa for dinner, so I'm sure our taste buds are in for another treat!

The blend of the old and new, the serene and the exciting, makes Kyoto a truly special place. It's a city that captivates the senses, stimulates the mind, and nourishes the soul. I feel so fortunate to be able to experience its wonders with my family, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
