Kyoto's Charms: From Manga to Mystical Moments

Today was a whirlwind of cultural immersion, a day where the vibrant world of manga met the serene beauty of ancient temples, all wrapped up with a stroll through one of Kyoto's most enchanting alleys. It's days like these that remind me why Hans and I chose Kyoto for our family trip – a place where the old and new harmoniously coexist.

Our day began with a hearty Japanese breakfast at Nakamura, a delightful start that fueled us for the adventures ahead. I always appreciate how Japanese breakfasts offer a variety of small dishes, each bursting with flavor. It’s a far cry from my usual toast back in Berlin, and a wonderful way to embrace the local culinary culture. The Michelin starred restaurant has been around for 180 years, and is currently run by the 6th generation owner and chef, Motokazu Nakamura. They are known for Kyoto cuisine, and the secret flavor passed down through generations.

Our first stop was the Kyoto International Manga Museum. As someone who appreciates modern art and its influence on culture, I was eager to explore this unique museum. I wasn't disappointed! The museum is housed in a former school building, which added to its charm. It was fascinating to see the history of manga and its evolution over the years. Even though the majority of the books were in Japanese, there was a small foreign language section on the first floor, which I appreciated.

I was particularly impressed by the Wall of Manga, filled with 50,000 books! It was a sight to behold, and I loved seeing people of all ages immersed in reading. There were also exhibits showcasing the work of renowned manga artists and interactive courses for kids. The museum truly captures the essence of manga culture and its impact on society. It was a fun experience for the whole family. I even tried my hand at drawing a manga character, with less than stellar results. Hans, of course, was much better, his software engineer brain seemingly wired for the precision required.

Sometimes, the most enriching travel experiences come from unexpected places, like delving into the colorful world of manga in a city steeped in tradition.

After our manga adventure, we sought tranquility at Nanzen-ji Temple. This Zen Buddhist temple, founded in 1291 by Emperor Kameyama, offered a serene escape from the bustling city. The temple grounds are expansive, with multiple sub-temples, each with its own unique charm. As we walked through the Sanmon gate, I was struck by its sheer size and grandeur. It was originally constructed in the 13th century, but was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1628. It is possible to climb up to the gate's balcony, from where the view extends across the city. The Hōjō, the former head priest's residence, is renowned for its rock garden, created in the 1600s by Kobori Enshu. The rocks are said to resemble tigers and cubs crossing through water.

One of the most unique features of Nanzen-ji is the brick aqueduct that runs through the temple grounds. Built during the Meiji Period, it's part of a canal system that carries water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto. It was an odd sight, but it added to the temple's unique character.

We explored the sub-temples, each offering a different perspective on Zen Buddhism. Nanzen-in Temple, located behind the aqueduct, was particularly beautiful, with its pond garden and mausoleum of Emperor Kameyama. The crisp February air and the quiet atmosphere made it a perfect place for reflection. I found myself thinking about my nursing work back in Berlin and how the principles of mindfulness and presence I was experiencing here could benefit my patients.

Lunch was at Hanasaki, where we enjoyed a traditional Kyoto kaiseki meal. The restaurant is in a traditional townhouse-style building, which added to the ambiance. The kaiseki cuisine emphasized seasonal ingredients, and each dish was meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. The restaurant prioritizes fresh, seasonal Kyoto vegetables. I especially enjoyed the charcoal-grilled fish and Kyoto vegetables, cooked right at our table. It was a culinary experience that delighted all our senses.

After lunch, we did a little shopping at Kyoto Porta, a large shopping mall connected to Kyoto Station. With over 220 shops, there was something for everyone. I picked up some traditional Japanese sweets and desserts as souvenirs for my friends back in Berlin. Kyoto Porta also offers amenities like free Wi-Fi, coin lockers, and duty-free shops, making it a convenient spot for travelers.

As evening approached, we made our way to Pontocho, one of Kyoto's most atmospheric dining areas. This narrow alley, running along the Kamogawa River, is packed with restaurants and bars. The traditional wooden architecture and the red lanterns create a magical ambiance.

We strolled along the alley, taking in the sights and sounds. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of a geisha, but no such luck tonight. Pontocho is known for its exclusive establishments, but there are also many tourist-friendly restaurants with English menus. It is known for its exclusive members only clubs. From May to September, many restaurants along Pontocho's eastern side construct temporary platforms (yuka) over the Kamogawa River. This seasonal tradition, known as kawayuka, allows diners to enjoy their meals outdoors while taking in the refreshing river breeze and lively summer atmosphere. Kawayuka dining is incredibly popular among both locals and visitors.

We ended our day with a delightful dinner at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. Although there are other locations, this one is the first outside of Kobe. The restaurant offers a fine dining experience with a modern style. We were seated at a counter in front of a teppan hot plate, where the chef prepared our Kobe beef to perfection. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, truly a culinary highlight of our trip. The meal included pumpkin soup, salad, and an array of vegetables. It was a truly unforgettable dining experience.

As I reflect on today, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's diverse offerings. From the vibrant world of manga to the serene beauty of Nanzen-ji Temple and the enchanting atmosphere of Pontocho, Kyoto has captured my heart. I am excited to see Shogunzuka Mound tomorrow, followed by Maruyama Park and Gion Corner. I'm especially looking forward to unwinding at Rocking Bar ING in the evening. This blend of cultural exploration and relaxation is exactly what my soul needs.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy an umbrella and sunscreen tomorrow. I had completely forgotten them when packing, and the February weather can be unpredictable. It's a small detail, but essential for a comfortable trip.

Kyoto continues to surprise and delight me, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
