A Day Among the Berbers

Today was an immersion into the heart of Berber culture, a journey that transcended mere sightseeing and became a profound connection with the land and its people. From the hearty breakfast at our hotel to the flavorful dinner in the city, every moment was a testament to the warmth and hospitality that Morocco so generously offers.

As I woke up this morning at the TUI BLUE Medina Gardens – Adults Only – All Inclusive, the promise of adventure hung in the air. After a delightful breakfast, fueling up for the day ahead, it was time to meet our guides from Trek In Morocco. I was excited to spend the day exploring the Atlas Mountains. It was a welcome change to be out in nature after spending time in the city. I made sure to pack my reusable water bottle, remembering the sunglasses I forgot earlier in the trip!

Our trek began with a scenic drive, leaving the bustling city of Marrakech behind and winding our way into the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. The landscape transformed dramatically, from the ochre hues of the city to the vibrant greens and rugged terrain of the mountains. Along the way, our guide shared stories of Berber life, their traditions, and their deep connection to the land. It was fascinating to learn about their sustainable practices, something close to my heart, given my work in renewable energy. We discussed everything from solar power potential in remote villages to the intricate water management systems they’ve developed over centuries.

The trek itself was moderately challenging, a perfect balance for our group of friends. We passed through small Berber villages, where the locals greeted us with warm smiles and curious glances. Children ran out to wave, their laughter echoing through the valleys. I couldn't help but think of Sofia and how much she would have loved this experience, running free and exploring the countryside.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.

We stopped for lunch at L'Ô à la Bouche, a charming restaurant nestled in the mountains. The Michelin-starred chef's commitment to seasonal products and local producers was evident in every bite. The flavors were a delightful fusion of French and Moroccan cuisine, a testament to the country's diverse culinary influences. It was interesting to learn that L'Ô à la Bouche is ranked as one of the best restaurants in the world by TripAdvisor. It was a lovely spot to relax and enjoy a meal with friends.

As we continued our trek, we learned more about the Berber people and their culture. The Berber language, their unique customs, and their intricate social structures. Our guide explained how they’ve managed to preserve their identity despite the influences of Arab and French cultures. I was particularly impressed by their commitment to community and their sustainable way of life, using resources wisely and respecting the environment. Lena, with her background in sustainable housing, would have been thrilled to see how the Berber people integrate their homes into the natural landscape, using local materials and traditional building techniques.

The panoramic views from the mountain passes were breathtaking. The vastness of the landscape, the clear blue sky, and the crisp mountain air filled me with a sense of awe and gratitude. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving these natural spaces for future generations. As a software engineer working in renewable energy, I feel a responsibility to contribute to a sustainable future, and this trek reinforced that commitment.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way back to Marrakech. The city welcomed us with its vibrant energy, a stark contrast to the tranquility of the mountains. We freshened up at the hotel before venturing out for dinner. We decided to try Naranj Libanese, a restaurant recommended for its delicious Lebanese cuisine. The restaurant was close to Jamaa El-Fna. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the food was a delightful change from the traditional Moroccan dishes we’d been enjoying. Naranj Libanese is known for its Lebanese cuisine using fresh ingredients from Marrakech. The service was excellent and the meal was a perfect end to an adventurous day.

After dinner, we decided to visit La Pergola, a rooftop bar known for its jazz music and relaxed atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's experiences. Sipping on a refreshing drink, listening to the smooth jazz, and gazing at the city lights, I felt a deep sense of contentment. The rooftop terrace gave an excellent view of the city. La Pergola is known for its cozy atmosphere and live jazz music. The combination of good food, music, and company made for a memorable evening. This was the first rooftop cafe to open in Marrakech. I made sure to check my socials for updates on live concerts.

As I sit here writing this, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences of today. The trek through the Atlas Mountains was not just a physical journey but a cultural immersion, a chance to connect with the Berber people and learn about their way of life. It was a reminder of the importance of sustainable living and the beauty of preserving natural landscapes.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the cultural heart of Marrakech with visits to the Dar Si Said Museum and the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter. I am eager to uncover more of the city's rich history and diverse heritage. We'll start the day with breakfast at the hotel, followed by lunch at La terrasse des épices and dinner at Le Nid´cigogne. Perhaps we’ll find time for a drink at Nuphar Bar in the evening. I can’t wait to discover what tomorrow brings!

The blend of adventure, culture, and culinary delights made for an unforgettable day, and I am excited to see what the rest of the trip holds. I am glad I got the chance to experience the jazz scene, and the Lebanese cuisine.

Until tomorrow,
Nuno
