Solo Exploration of Kyoto's Cultural Heritage
Day 7: Zen Gardens and Culinary Delights: A Day of Kyoto's Treasures
Exploring Kyoto's serene temples, rock gardens, and exquisite cuisine offers a day of reflection and indulgence in Japanese culture.
A Day of Reflection and Flavors
Today was a journey into the heart of Kyoto's spiritual and culinary landscape. From the tranquil rock gardens of ancient temples to the exquisite flavors of local cuisine, every moment was a sensory delight. It's days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the beauty and depth of cultural experiences with all of you.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Anzukko. This cozy spot is known for its inventive gyoza, and I was eager to see what all the buzz was about. I opted for their signature Anzukko Gyoza, and I must say, they lived up to the hype. The crispy, lacy bottoms gave way to a burst of juicy meat and alliums. I also tried the Camembert cheese gyoza, a surprisingly delightful combination of creamy and savory. Anzukko is definitely a place I'd recommend to anyone looking for a unique take on this classic dish.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to explore the temples of northern Kyoto. First on my list was Ryoan-ji, famous for its enigmatic rock garden. As I sat on the veranda, gazing at the fifteen stones arranged in a sea of white gravel, I couldn't help but feel a sense of calm wash over me. The garden's design is deceptively simple, yet it invites endless contemplation. Depending on your vantage point, not all the stones are visible at once, a feature that some say represents the Zen Buddhist concept of impermanence.

The essence of Zen lies not in grand gestures, but in the quiet contemplation of simple beauty.
I spent a good hour lost in thought, pondering the garden's meaning and the nature of existence. The worn aesthetic and the imperfect, weathered walls surrounding the garden resonated deeply, exemplifying the Zen philosophy of wabi-sabi – finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence.
Next, I made my way to Ninna-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich imperial history. Founded in 888 by Emperor Uda, Ninna-ji is the head temple of the Omuro School of Shingon Buddhism. The temple's five-story pagoda is a sight to behold, and the serene gardens offer a peaceful respite from the bustling city. Although it’s not cherry blossom season yet, I learned that Ninna-ji is famous for its late-blooming Omuro cherry trees, which I'm sure are stunning in the spring.

I explored the Goten, which reflects the architectural style of imperial residences. From 888 to 1869, it was a tradition for emperors to send a son to the temple to become the head priest. It was fascinating to wander through halls that once housed emperors and aristocratic priests, imagining the history that unfolded within these walls.
My final temple visit of the day was to Daitoku-ji Temple, a sprawling complex of nearly two dozen subtemples. Daitoku-ji is closely associated with the tea ceremony, thanks to its connection with the influential tea master Sen no Rikyu. Though the main buildings were closed to the public, I was able to explore several of the subtemples and their stunning Zen gardens.

One subtemple, Koto-in, was particularly memorable. It was built in 1601 by Hosokawa Tadaoki, a commander who served under Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu. The temple is famous for its maple trees, which create a vaulted canopy over the approach, and its tranquil moss garden.
As evening approached, it was time to indulge in another culinary adventure. I had made a reservation at Chihana, a highly-regarded kaiseki restaurant known for its exquisite cuisine and artistic presentation. From the moment I walked in, I knew I was in for a special experience. The restaurant's intimate setting, with only a handful of counter seats and a few tables, created a sense of exclusivity and calm. I decided to go with the Omakase menu.

Each dish was a masterpiece, a delicate balance of flavors and textures that showcased the best of Kyoto's seasonal ingredients. From the appetizer of seasonal fruits with seafood to the soup dish representing the four seasons, every course was a delight to the senses. The chefs' attention to detail and passion for their craft were evident in every bite. The service was impeccable, and the staff made me feel incredibly welcome. Though Lena couldn't be here to experience it with me, I know she would have appreciated the artistry and care that went into each dish.
To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Kyoto Star Bar. Tucked away in a narrow alley, this bar is known for its expertly crafted cocktails and traditional atmosphere. I enjoyed a Ki No Bi Negroni, a local twist on the classic cocktail, while soaking in the ambiance. The bartender, dressed in a traditional kimono, added to the bar's unique charm.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's rich cultural heritage. From the serene temples to the exquisite cuisine, every moment was a reminder of the beauty and depth of Japanese culture. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to explore Gion, Yasaka Shrine, and Pontocho. It will be another day of discovery and adventure.
I'm particularly excited to wander through Gion, known for its preserved wooden machiya houses and geishas. I'm hoping to catch a glimpse of a geiko or maiko as they hurry to their appointments. I also plan to visit Yasaka Shrine, one of Kyoto's oldest and most important shrines, and to stroll along Pontocho, a narrow alley lined with restaurants and bars overlooking the Kamogawa River.
Before heading back to Germany, I also want to pick up a few souvenirs for Lena and Sofia at Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. Sofia would absolutely adore a traditional Japanese doll or a colorful kite.
I must remember to buy a travel adapter tomorrow. It would be useful to have one. And perhaps a Japanese phrasebook, too.
Tomorrow is my last full day here, so I want to make the most of it. I know that I'll be leaving Kyoto with a heart full of memories and a deeper appreciation for this incredible city.
Until tomorrow,
Nuno
