Echoes of Emperors: A Day Immersed in Kyoto's Imperial Grandeur

Today, I embarked on a journey through the heart of Kyoto, tracing the footsteps of emperors and immersing myself in the serene beauty of its gardens and shrines. It was a day filled with history, culture, and moments of quiet reflection – a perfect blend for a soul seeking to understand the essence of this ancient city.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Ajikyu. It's a tiny, unassuming izakaya that feels more like someone's home than a restaurant. The atmosphere was boisterous and lively, a real home away from home for the locals. I took the owner's recommendation and had a grilled fish dish, the skin was incredibly crispy and full of flavor. Fuelled up for the day, I set off to explore the city’s imperial treasures.

My first stop was the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The weather in Kyoto this February has been mostly dry and cool, perfect for walking, so I layered up as recommended. It's amazing to think that from 794 to 1868, this was the residence of Japan's Imperial Family. Stepping onto the grounds, I was immediately struck by the austere elegance of the buildings. The palace exudes a sense of power and history, even in its tranquil state. I joined a guided tour, and I learned about the meticulous craftsmanship that went into every detail, from the intricate roof tiles to the carefully placed stones in the gardens. Unfortunately, I missed the special spring opening, which is held in February to coincide with the plum blossoms, but I was still able to view the Takamikura and Michodai in the Shishinden Hall.

The essence of Kyoto lies not just in its stunning visuals, but in the stories whispered by its ancient stones and the traditions carried on by its people.

After the palace, I strolled through the adjacent Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. This expansive parkland, once the exclusive domain of the imperial court, is now a public space where anyone can wander and find respite. The bare trees of winter had a stark beauty, and I could imagine how stunning it must be in spring when the plum blossoms are in full bloom. I found a quiet bench and simply sat, listening to the wind rustling through the trees and watching locals go about their day. It was a moment of perfect serenity.

For lunch, I decided to treat myself to a Kobe beef experience at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. The restaurant was elegant, with counter seating facing the teppan hotplate. I watched as the chef expertly prepared my A5-grade Kobe sirloin. The meat was incredibly tender, practically melting in my mouth, and the service was impeccable. It was definitely a luxurious experience, but worth every penny.

Next on my list was the Heian Shrine, a relatively modern structure built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding. The shrine is a scaled-down replica of the original Imperial Palace from the Heian period, and its vibrant vermillion color is striking against the winter sky. As luck would have it, my visit coincided with a flea market at Okazaki Park near the Heian Shrine. It was a vibrant scene with families, hobbyists, and artisans selling everything from handmade crafts to recycled goods. I picked up a few unique souvenirs, feeling good about supporting local creators and sustainable practices.

I was also lucky enough to catch the Setsubun Festival at the Heian Shrine! The Setsubun Festival marks the transition from winter to spring, and it's a lively tradition observed across temples and shrines in Kyoto. The atmosphere was festive and carnival-like, with food stalls lining the temple grounds. I watched the theatrical mamemaki (bean-throwing) ceremonies, where performers threw roasted beans into the crowd to cast out evil spirits. It was a joyful way to embrace Kyoto's deep-rooted customs and have fun with the locals.

As evening approached, I made my way to Jiki Miyazawa for dinner. This one-Michelin-starred Kappō restaurant offers a refined dining experience with only ten counter seats. I was fortunate to be seated right in front of the head chef, Takatomo Izumi-san, and watched him work his magic on the plate. The meal was a multi-course Kaiseki, each dish a work of art. I tried the signature Yaki goma tofu, made of white sesame. The sesame crumbs were cold and crunchy while the tofu was warm and creamy. The flavors were subtle yet complex, and the presentation was exquisite. It was an unforgettable meal that showcased the best of Kyoto cuisine.

To cap off the evening, I ventured into the UNDERBAR-KYOTO, a bar known for its friendly staff and good vibes. I was looking for a place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing, and this spot hit the mark. The neon light decor added a nice pop of color, and the DJ played a mix of EDM and pop. It was a great place to relax and soak in the Kyoto nightlife.

As I reflect on today, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's imperial heritage. From the grandeur of the Imperial Palace to the serenity of the Gyoen National Garden and the vibrancy of Heian Shrine, every moment was a treasure. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Nanzen-ji Temple, the Philosopher's Path, and Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion). It seems like every corner of this city has something new to discover, and I can't wait to see what adventures await.

This solo journey has been incredibly enriching. While I miss Lena and Sofia, I know they would have loved experiencing this with me. I am already looking forward to sharing these experiences with them and planning a family trip back to Japan soon. Perhaps next time, we’ll come during the plum blossom season, or maybe even for the Baikasai (Plum Blossom Festival) at Kitano Tenmangū, where geiko and maiko serve tea amidst the blossoming trees. For now, I am content with the memories I'm making on this solo adventure, soaking in the culture and history of this incredible city.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a note to pick up a Japanese phrasebook and a travel adapter tomorrow. It seems I had forgotten those essentials, and they would definitely come in handy for the rest of my trip.
