Solo Exploration of Kyoto's Cultural Heritage
Day 4: A Spiritual Sunday Stroll: Discovering Kyoto's Ancient Soul
Wander through Kyoto's historic Kiyomizu-dera, Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka, and savor exquisite dining experiences in the heart of Japan.
Whispers of Ancient Kyoto
Today was a day for the soul, a gentle Sunday where I let Kyoto's ancient spirit guide my footsteps. It was about more than just seeing the sights; it was about feeling the history, tasting the culture, and breathing in the very essence of this remarkable city. It was a day that reminded me why I started this blog – to share the kind of travel experiences that stay with you long after you've returned home.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Hafuu. Nestled close to the Kyoto-Gosyo, this restaurant is renowned for its exquisite meat dishes. Opting for the beef cutlet sandwich, I savored each bite as the flavors danced on my palate. The special sauce and cabbage complemented the beef cutlet, while the bread soaked up the delicious sauce. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The restaurant's name, Hafuu, meaning 'wave' and 'wind', perfectly embodies the restaurant's desire for its customers to have a great and comfortable time.

With a satisfied stomach, I set off towards Kiyomizu-dera, one of Kyoto's most celebrated temples. The crisp morning air nipped at my cheeks as I made my way through the charming streets, already bustling with locals and tourists alike. Even though it's February, the promise of spring was in the air, a subtle shift that made the experience all the more poignant. The temple, founded in 778, stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the exquisite beauty of Japanese architecture. The history of the temple dates back over 1250 years, and it has long been open to people of all classes.

The iconic wooden stage of Kiyomizu-dera offered a breathtaking panoramic view of Kyoto. I paused there, letting the scene sink in – the city sprawling beneath a gentle haze, the distant mountains framing the horizon. It was a moment of serene contemplation, a reminder of the beauty and tranquility that can be found even in the midst of a bustling city. I learned that the stage was constructed with 168 pillars, and without the use of any nails!
To walk through Kyoto is to walk through centuries of history, culture, and unwavering spirit.
From Kiyomizu-dera, I ventured down towards Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, two beautifully preserved historical streets that wind their way down the hillside. These slopes are lined with traditional wooden buildings housing an array of shops, tea houses, and restaurants. According to one theory, Sannenzaka got its name from leading to Koyasu no To, a pagoda known for safe childbirth within Kiyomizu Temple.

As I strolled along the cobblestone paths, I couldn't help but feel transported back in time. The atmosphere was enchanting, a blend of old-world charm and modern-day commerce. I stopped to admire the intricate crafts on display, the delicate ceramics, and the vibrant textiles. I even indulged in a few local delicacies, savoring the unique flavors of Kyoto. I was careful as I walked, as legend has it that if you fall on Sannenzaka, you will die within three years, and if you fall on Ninenzaka, you will die within two! I made sure to keep a firm footing.
Lunch was an equally memorable affair at French Dining Top of Kyoto. Located on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto, this revolving restaurant offered stunning 360-degree views of the city. The lunch was a delightful fusion of French culinary techniques and local Japanese ingredients. The stunning scenery and elegant atmosphere created a unique and unforgettable dining experience. I savored the Wagyu Steak, and finished it off with a glass of champagne.

After lunch, I decided to do some shopping at the Daimaru Kyoto Store. This department store seamlessly blends traditional charm with modern luxury. Wandering through the various floors, I admired the high-end fashion, exquisite homewares, and gourmet delicacies. It was a perfect way to immerse myself in the city's unique blend of tradition and modernity.

As evening approached, I made my way to Masayoshi Japanese Dining for dinner. This restaurant offered a tranquil space stylishly renovated from a 150-year-old Kyoto townhouse. Opting for the steak, I savored each bite of the carefully selected black wagyu beef. The rich flavor of the meat, combined with the elegant atmosphere, created a truly memorable dining experience.

It's funny, I almost forgot to pack my travel adapter for this trip, a near disaster averted at the last minute. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Kyoto Imperial Palace and the serene Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, followed by the Heian Shrine. I might even treat myself to a drink at UNDERBAR-KYOTO in the evening. It's these little moments of spontaneity that make solo travel so rewarding.
Today was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with their soul. It was a day of gentle exploration, exquisite dining, and profound appreciation for the beauty and history of Kyoto. It's experiences like these that fuel my passion for travel and inspire me to share my adventures with all of you. Tonight, as I reflect on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this remarkable city and to share its stories with the world. I am already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.
The plum blossoms are starting to bloom, and I'm looking forward to the Baikasai (Plum Blossom Festival) at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine on February 25th. Perhaps I'll see some geiko and maiko from the Kamishichiken District serving tea at an outdoor tea ceremony!
Until tomorrow, safe travels!
