Exploring Naoshima's Art House Project, Benesse House Park, and Teshima Art Museum for a day of serene beauty and artistic immersion.
Island Echoes: Art, Memory, and the Sea
Today was a day of quiet exploration and profound artistic encounters. Leaving behind the familiar comfort of My Lodge Naoshima, I set out to delve deeper into the soul of this island, a place where art breathes in harmony with nature and whispers stories of the past. With each step, I felt myself becoming more attuned to the subtle rhythms of Naoshima, a place that invites introspection and inspires creativity.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. This cozy spot, tucked away in Honmura, is known for its fresh, local ingredients and welcoming atmosphere. I savored a delicious scone with sea-salted butter and orange jam, a perfect start to fuel my artistic explorations. It's amazing to think that a dietitian is behind the menu, ensuring that every dish is not only delicious but also nourishing. This attention to detail and care for the community is something I deeply admire, and it aligns perfectly with my own values of sustainability and responsible living. I made a mental note to bring Lena and Sofia here someday; I know they would love the cafe’s warm atmosphere and the healthy, delicious food.

Fueled and ready, I headed to the Art House Project: Haisha. Haisha, meaning dentist, was once a dental clinic and residence, now transformed by artist Shinro Ohtake into a captivating art installation. The exterior is a chaotic yet meticulously composed collage of repurposed materials, a visual narrative of accumulated memories. Inside, the space is equally enthralling, with sculptures and installations that blur the lines between art and architecture. As I wandered through the rooms, I felt like I was stepping into a dream, a world where time and memory intertwine in unexpected ways. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving the past and finding new meaning in forgotten spaces.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next on my itinerary was the Benesse House Park. This unique complex, designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, seamlessly blends art, architecture, and nature. As I strolled through the park, I was struck by the way the sculptures and installations were integrated into the landscape, creating a harmonious dialogue between art and the environment. The gentle breeze, the sound of the waves, and the vibrant colors of the art all combined to create a truly immersive experience. I spent a long time simply sitting on a bench, gazing out at the Seto Inland Sea and contemplating the beauty that surrounded me. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the importance of finding peace and inspiration in the natural world.

After a light lunch at NaoPAM/ Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda, a charming eatery known for its fresh seafood set meals, I embarked on a journey to Teshima Island to visit the Teshima Art Museum. The ferry ride itself was a treat, with stunning views of the surrounding islands and the sparkling sea. The Teshima Art Museum is a truly unique architectural marvel, designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa and artist Rei Naito. The museum resembles a water droplet resting on a hill overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. Inside, the space is devoid of pillars, and two large openings in the ceiling allow natural light, wind, and sound to enter, creating an ethereal and meditative atmosphere. Water continuously springs from the ground, creating a mesmerizing dance of light and shadow. As I sat in the museum, I felt a profound connection to nature, a sense of being part of something larger than myself. It was an experience that transcended words, a moment of pure, unadulterated beauty.

Before heading back to Naoshima, I took a moment to explore the Art Island Center, picking up a few postcards to send to Lena and Sofia. I always love finding unique souvenirs that capture the essence of a place, and the Art Island Center had a wonderful selection of locally made crafts and artwork.

For dinner, I decided to try Yayoda, a seafood restaurant known for its fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant embodies the essence of Japanese culinary artistry. The warm ambiance and traditional Japanese aesthetics made it a perfect spot for relaxation after a day of exploring. I savored every bite of the expertly prepared seafood skewers, paired with a selection of local sake. It was a fitting end to a day filled with art, beauty, and contemplation.

As I walked back to My Lodge Naoshima, the stars twinkled above me, and the gentle sound of the waves filled the air. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique island, a place where art and nature coexist in perfect harmony. Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Naoshima Fishing Park and Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower, venturing further into the island's natural beauty. Perhaps I’ll even stop by Kon'nichiwa for a nightcap. But for now, I'll drift off to sleep, dreaming of water droplets, art installations, and the gentle rhythm of the sea.
This trip has been a powerful reminder of the importance of slowing down, connecting with nature, and finding inspiration in unexpected places. As a software engineer, I often get caught up in the fast-paced world of technology, but Naoshima has shown me the value of taking a step back, appreciating the beauty that surrounds us, and allowing ourselves to be moved by art. I hope that my experiences here will inspire others to embark on their own journeys of discovery, to seek out new perspectives, and to find beauty in the everyday.
And who knows, maybe I can even convince Lena to join me on a future trip to Naoshima. I think she would appreciate the island's commitment to sustainability and its unique blend of art, architecture, and nature. And Sofia would love running around the parks and discovering the hidden art installations. Until then, I'll continue to explore this island paradise, one art installation, one delicious meal, and one breathtaking view at a time.
