Solo Exploration of Naoshima Island's Art and Culture
Day 8: Island Serenity: Finding Peace and Perspective on Naoshima
Discovering the hidden gems of Naoshima: fishing, sightseeing, and finding tranquility in art and nature on a solo journey.
A Day of Reflection and Exploration
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of active exploration and quiet contemplation that perfectly captures the essence of Naoshima. Leaving the more intense art experiences behind for a moment, I decided to delve into the island's less-trodden paths, seeking a different kind of inspiration. The day unfolded with a mix of scenic views, local flavors, and moments of peaceful reflection.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Little Plum. The cozy cafe was just what I needed to fuel up for the day's adventures. The interior had a relaxed atmosphere, with modern art prints adorning the walls. I enjoyed a simple, yet satisfying meal, and chatted briefly with the friendly staff before heading out. It's these small, authentic interactions that truly enrich a travel experience.
First on the agenda was the Naoshima Fishing Park. Now, I'm no seasoned angler, but the idea of spending a morning by the sea, surrounded by nature, was too appealing to resist. I rented a rod and some bait, and found a spot along the pier. The park was peaceful, with only a few other people scattered about, enjoying the calm morning.

The experience itself was surprisingly therapeutic. There's something incredibly calming about the act of casting a line and waiting patiently, the gentle lapping of the waves providing a soothing soundtrack. I didn't catch anything, but honestly, that hardly mattered. The time spent simply being present, breathing in the fresh sea air, was reward enough. I could see families enjoying picnics and the beautiful views.
Sometimes, the greatest discoveries are not the things we find, but the perspectives we gain.
After a relaxing morning at the fishing park, my stomach started to rumble. Lunch was at Perma_Naoshima, a ramen restaurant known for its authentic flavors and cozy atmosphere. I opted for a classic shoyu ramen, and it was absolutely delicious. The broth was rich and savory, and the noodles had the perfect amount of chewiness. It was a comforting and satisfying meal that warmed me from the inside out. As a software engineer, I appreciate the care and precision that goes into crafting the perfect bowl of ramen; it's an art form in itself.

With renewed energy, I set off to explore the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower. Located a bit further inland on Shodoshima, reaching the tower involved a scenic bus ride through the island's rolling hills. The tower itself offers panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding islands. The sky was clear, and the vista was simply breathtaking. It felt like being on top of the world, with the vast expanse of the sea stretching out in every direction.

The Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower is actually located on Shodoshima, which required a ferry trip from Naoshima. The views from the tower were expansive, showcasing the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding islands. The tower is open 24 hours.
My final stop for the day was Kasaneiwa, a site of stacked rocks with spiritual significance. Reaching Kasaneiwa involved a bit of a hike, but the effort was well worth it. The rock formations were impressive, and the surrounding landscape was lush and green. There’s something truly awe-inspiring about Kasaneiwa. The way the rocks are stacked is a mystery, with some believing it to be a natural formation and others attributing it to human intervention. This place is considered a spiritual power spot, and I could definitely feel a unique energy in the air.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Naoshima, feeling a sense of contentment wash over me. For dinner, I decided to try the Terrace Restaurant at Benesse House. The restaurant offers French cuisine with beautiful views. Although some reviews mention that the prices are high , I decided to treat myself. The ambiance was elegant, and the service was impeccable. I enjoyed a delicious meal while watching the sunset over the Seto Inland Sea. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and reflection.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I decided to check out Kon'nichiwa, a local bar known for its cozy atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a long day. I enjoyed a quiet drink, chatted with some of the locals, and soaked in the laid-back vibe of the island. The bar had a rustic interior, with bookshelves and trinkets adding to its charm. I learned that Kon'nichiwa offers vegan options.

As I walked back to my accommodation, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Naoshima has a way of slowing you down, of encouraging you to appreciate the simple things in life. It's a place where art and nature coexist in perfect harmony, where you can find inspiration in the most unexpected places.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Danyama, Yokobou Park and Chinu - the Black Sea Bream of Uno. I am also planning to do some shopping at Naoshima Shop Umihotaru, before I have my last dinner here. It will be sad to leave this place, but I will definitely carry the inspiration with me.
This trip has reinforced my belief in the importance of sustainable living and renewable energy, reminding me of the beauty we need to protect. Perhaps Lena and Sofia would love this place as well.
Good night from Naoshima.
