Solo Exploration of Naoshima Island's Art and Culture
Day 6: Art, Nature, and Reflection: A Day of Immersion on Naoshima
Discover the beauty and tranquility of Naoshima through its unique art installations and serene landscapes on a solo journey.
A Day of Artistic Exploration
Today was a day of deep immersion into the art and soul of Naoshima. From thought-provoking installations to moments of quiet reflection, the island offered a unique blend of experiences that resonated with my passion for sustainability and art. I started my day eager to explore, and Naoshima certainly didn't disappoint.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Salon Nakaoku. Nestled in the Honmura district, this charming café is housed in a refurbished traditional farmhouse, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The café is known for its original-blend coffees, and I opted for their specialty, a fruity blend that provided the perfect start to my day. It was a peaceful spot to gather my thoughts and prepare for the day's artistic adventures.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Fueled and ready, my first stop was the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. This outdoor installation, created by Cai Guo-Qiang, is based on Feng Shui principles, with a hot tub made of Taihu rocks from China and an American-made Jacuzzi. Though I didn't partake in the bathing experience, the location itself was incredibly serene, offering a sense of harmony between art and nature. I took some time to simply sit by the coast, observing the dynamic energy flow and reflecting on the coexistence of different cultures and elements within this single artwork. I could see myself returning to experience the herbal medicine bath offered on Sundays.

Next on my itinerary was George Rickey’s Three Squares Vertical Diagonal, 1972-82. As a software engineer, I am always fascinated by kinetic art, and this sculpture was no exception. The way the heavy iron plates swayed gracefully in the wind, creating a mesmerizing dance against the backdrop of the Seto Inland Sea, was truly captivating. It was a perfect example of how art can interact with its environment, changing with the weather and time of day. I spent a good while just watching its movements, contemplating the balance and precision required to create such a piece.

For lunch, I ventured to Nagomi, a restaurant located within the Naoshima welfare center. This unique setting provides an inviting atmosphere where locals and tourists can enjoy hearty Japanese meals together. I opted for one of their set meals, featuring fresh, local ingredients prepared in a traditional style. It was a comforting and delicious meal, and I appreciated the opportunity to connect with the local community. The communal canteen-like environment made it easy to strike up conversations with other diners, sharing stories and experiences.

In the afternoon, I set out to find La forêt des murmures. This installation, created by Christian Boltanski, is located on Teshima Island, a short ferry ride from Naoshima. The forest is filled with hundreds of wind chimes, each bearing the name of a loved one written by past visitors. As the wind rustled through the trees, the chimes created a soft, whisper-like sound, evoking a sense of memory and reflection. Although getting to Teshima wasn't on today's schedule, I found myself thinking about Lena and Sofia and the quiet, reflective space I was experiencing and the names of loved ones written on strips of transparent material hanging from each bell. It was a profoundly moving experience, reminding me of the importance of cherishing our connections with others.

As evening approached, I decided to explore Naoshima Hall. This community hall, designed by architect Hiroshi Sambuichi, blends traditional elements with modern technology. The building features a rectangular window at the top, creating a “breathe in, breathe out” system that connects the structure with the earth. While there, I decided to visit the bar and enjoy a drink. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's experiences.

For dinner, I returned to Restaurant EN, eager to try their local cuisine. It was a delightful culinary experience, and I savored every bite while reflecting on the day's artistic journey.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Art House Project: Haisha and Benesse House Park. I’m also hoping to make it to the Teshima Art Museum, which I’ve heard is an architectural marvel. I’m looking forward to another day of exploring the intersection of art, nature, and community here on Naoshima.
Naoshima continues to surprise me with its ability to blend art seamlessly into the everyday. It’s a place where you can stumble upon thought-provoking installations around every corner, and I’m excited to see what tomorrow brings. As I head back to My Lodge Naoshima for a good night's rest, I feel grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in this unique cultural landscape.
