Solo Art and Culinary Exploration on Naoshima Island
Day 2: Art and Reflection: Discovering the Soul of Naoshima's Art House Project
Immerse yourself in the enchanting Art House Project on Naoshima Island, where art, culture, and reflection intertwine seamlessly.
Whispers of the Past, Visions of the Future
Today, I embarked on a journey through time and space, exploring Naoshima's renowned Art House Project. This unique initiative breathes new life into abandoned homes, transforming them into captivating art installations that resonate with the island's history and culture. It was a day of quiet contemplation, punctuated by moments of unexpected beauty and profound connection. I came here seeking artistic inspiration, and what I found was a deeper understanding of community, memory, and the power of transformation.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Ippo. The café, near Minamidera, had a cozy atmosphere, and I enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast set. It was a delightful way to fuel up before diving into the day's artistic explorations. After breakfast, I made my way to the Art House Project, ready to immerse myself in the unique blend of art and architecture that Naoshima is famous for.

My first stop was Go'o Shrine. Perched on a hill, the shrine offered stunning views of the sea and surrounding islands. The integration of contemporary art within the traditional Shinto setting was seamless, creating a space for both contemplation and appreciation of nature. I descended the glass staircase into the underground chamber, where the interplay of light and space evoked a sense of tranquility and introspection. The way the sunlight filtered through the glass steps, casting patterns on the walls, was simply mesmerizing.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next on my list was Minamidera, a structure designed by Tadao Ando, housing James Turrell's Backside of the Moon. This was perhaps the most challenging, yet rewarding, experience of the day. Entering the darkened space, my vision was slowly overtaken by a subtle play of light, challenging my perception and creating a sense of disorientation. It was an exercise in patience, as the artwork gradually revealed itself, prompting a profound meditation on light, space, and consciousness. The experience was so unique; it's hard to put into words. It was like stepping into another dimension, where the familiar rules of sight no longer applied. I was grateful for the opportunity to experience such a thought-provoking piece.

My final stop in the Art House Project was Haisha, the former home and office of a dentist transformed into an eclectic gallery by Shinro Ohtake. This was a complete contrast to the serene Go'o Shrine and the meditative Minamidera. Haisha was chaotic, vibrant, and utterly captivating. The house incorporated various stylistic elements, resembling a sculpture, a painting, and a collage all in one. The replica of the Statue of Liberty was unexpected and added to the surreal atmosphere.

After a day of exploring art, I was ready for a hearty lunch. I headed to Okonomiyaki Umikko, a local favorite known for its savory Japanese pancakes. I decided to try the local specialty, customizing my okonomiyaki with fresh, regional ingredients. Watching the chef expertly cook the dish on the teppan grill was an experience in itself. The warm and welcoming atmosphere of the restaurant made it a perfect spot to relax and savor the flavors of Naoshima. I must admit, I was so hungry that I nearly devoured the entire pancake in one go!

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to a special dinner at Issen. This restaurant is known for its kaiseki cuisine, a multi-course dining experience that emphasizes seasonal ingredients and meticulous presentation. The tranquil setting and the artistry of each dish created a truly memorable culinary experience. I opted for the seasonal tasting menu, and each course was a work of art in itself. The delicate flavors and the beautiful presentation were a testament to the chef's skill and dedication.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to Bar SARU for a nightcap. The bar had a cozy and intimate atmosphere, with reggae music playing in the background. I enjoyed a local beer while chatting with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and experiences from our time on Naoshima. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

Reflecting on the day, I'm struck by how seamlessly Naoshima blends art, nature, and community. The Art House Project is a testament to the island's commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing contemporary expression. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the iconic Yellow Pumpkin and Red Pumpkin, as well as the Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu. I'm also looking forward to exploring the Naoshima Shop Umihotaru for some unique souvenirs. For now, I'll rest and dream of the artistic wonders that await me on this enchanting island.
