Whispers of the Island

Today was a day of quiet exploration, a gentle wandering through Naoshima's less-trodden paths. It’s funny, isn’t it? We often chase the grand sights, but it’s in the unassuming corners that the true spirit of a place reveals itself. Today, Naoshima whispered its secrets, and I was all ears.

My day began, as most good days do, with a hearty breakfast. Little Plum was the perfect spot, a cozy cafe-bar that felt like a local secret. Tucked away in a renovated marine container, it had a unique charm. I opted for their homemade dry curry, a flavorful start to the day. Fuelled up, I set off to explore.

First on the agenda was the Walking Ark, an open-air museum nestled in Ogicho. The walk there was lovely, a chance to soak in the island's atmosphere. The sculptures were thoughtfully placed, inviting contemplation and reflection. It struck me how art here isn't confined to walls; it breathes with the landscape.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in the spotlight, but in the gentle shadows of the everyday.

Next, I ventured towards La forêt des murmures. This installation by Christian Boltanski is located on Teshima Island. It required a bit of a trek, and I found myself wishing I'd remembered to pack sunscreen. Note to self: always double-check the essentials! But the journey was worth it. As I entered the forest, the sound of wind chimes filled the air, each one bearing the name of a loved one. It was a deeply moving experience, a reminder of the delicate threads that connect us all. The forest was cool and quiet, a perfect sanctuary from the summer heat.

From the forest, I made my way to Gokurakuji Temple, a serene Buddhist sanctuary. The temple dates back to the early Heian period. As I approached, the gentle ascent up the hill created a sense of anticipation. The temple itself was humble yet striking, showcasing traditional Japanese design. I took a moment to appreciate the intricate details and the peaceful gardens. It was a perfect spot for contemplation, a chance to quiet my mind and appreciate the present moment.

Lunch was at Perma_Naoshima, a ramen restaurant that came highly recommended. And it did not disappoint! The ramen was rich and savory, a true culinary delight. The chefs clearly take pride in their craft, using fresh, local ingredients. I opted for the tonkotsu ramen, a hearty and flavorful choice. It was the perfect fuel for the afternoon's adventures.

As evening approached, I found myself drawn to maimai, a bar known for its laid-back atmosphere. It’s a garage dining cafe where you can have a local fish burger called Naoshima Burger, which sandwiches fresh Hamachi (young yellowtail) with big fluffy buns. I decided to try the Naoshima Burger, a local specialty featuring fresh yellowtail. It was delicious, a perfect blend of flavors. I paired it with a local craft beer, a refreshing end to a day of exploring.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Naoshima isn't just about the big-name museums and installations. It's about the small moments, the quiet corners, and the unexpected encounters. It's about the way the art blends with the landscape, the way the locals welcome you with open arms, and the way the island whispers its secrets if you take the time to listen.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Art Island Center, Naoshima Fishing Park and Yokobou Park. I’m also hoping to do some shopping at the Art House Project: Kadoya. I’m excited to see what other hidden gems this island has to offer. Maybe I’ll even remember the sunscreen this time!

For now, though, I’m content to sit here, savoring the last sips of my beer and listening to the sounds of the island. It’s a perfect end to a perfect day, a reminder that sometimes, the best journeys are the ones where you simply wander and let the world unfold around you. Until tomorrow, Naoshima. Dhanyabad!

P.S. Anjali, I wish you were here to share this experience with me. We will definitely come back together!
