A Day of Discovery and Immersion

Today was a day of diving deeper into the soul of Naoshima. It wasn't just about seeing art, but about understanding the island's history, its people, and the unique way they've embraced art as a part of their everyday lives. From exploring repurposed spaces to experiencing a culturally infused bath, today was a testament to Naoshima's ability to surprise and inspire.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Yayoda. I opted for their seafood set, eager to start the day with the freshest catch. The meal was simple but incredibly satisfying, providing the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. It reminded me of the breakfasts Anjali and I used to have back in Nepal – fresh, wholesome, and full of flavor.

Miyanoura Gallery 6: A Transformation

My first stop was Miyanoura Gallery 6. This gallery is housed in what was once a pachinko parlor, a type of amusement arcade. Architect Taira Nishizawa transformed the space into a gallery that now hosts rotating exhibitions. Currently, it features the 'Setouchi Archive' by artist Motoyuki Shitamichi, which documents various aspects of the Setouchi region's history.

The transformation of the pachinko parlor into an art space is a fascinating commentary on Naoshima's own transformation. It's a reminder that art can breathe new life into forgotten spaces, giving them new meaning and purpose. The exhibition itself was thought-provoking, offering insights into the island's past and the lives of its people.

Shipyard Works by Shinro Ohtake: Industrial Art

Next on my itinerary was Shipyard Works by Shinro Ohtake. This installation is located near the Benesse House Museum and showcases Ohtake's innovative use of materials and forms. The works are set against the backdrop of the sea and sky, creating a dramatic and visually stunning experience.

Ohtake's work is known for blending art with the island's industrial heritage. As I wandered through the exhibit, I was struck by the way the pieces seemed to interact with their surroundings. The combination of art and nature created a sense of tranquility and wonder. It was a perfect spot for photography, and I spent a good hour capturing the unique structures against the coastal landscape.

I remember when I first arrived in Leipzig, the industrial areas felt so alien to me. Over time, I learned to appreciate the beauty in the unexpected, much like Ohtake's work here. It's a testament to how art can help us see the world in new ways.

Lunch at NaoPAM/Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda: A Taste of the Sea

For lunch, I headed to NaoPAM/Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda, a charming eatery known for its fresh fish set meals. The menu changes daily, depending on the catch of the day. I opted for the grilled fish set, which featured a local sea bream.

The fish was cooked to perfection, its delicate flavor enhanced by a subtle blend of seasonings. The set also included miso soup, pickled vegetables, and rice, providing a balanced and satisfying meal. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming, making me feel right at home. It reminded me of my own restaurant in Leipzig, where I strive to create a warm and inviting space for my customers.

Shimacoya: A Literary Escape

After lunch, I decided to explore Shimacoya, a unique book café renovated from a 130-year-old private house. The café sells books on various topics, including DIY, nature, travel, culture, design, and architecture. You can relax on the porch or in the garden while reading.

Shimacoya is more than just a café; it's a place to escape and immerse yourself in literature and art. The atmosphere is peaceful and inviting, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. I spent some time browsing the shelves, discovering new authors and ideas. The café also offers tent stays, which sounds like a unique experience for another time.

Anjali has always been the bookworm in our family, but I find myself drawn to the quiet contemplation that reading allows, especially in a place like this.

Cultural Melting Bath: A Soothing Experience

My final stop for the day was the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. Created by artist Cai Guo-Qiang, this outdoor installation is designed to promote relaxation and cultural exchange. The bath is situated on the coastline and arranged according to Feng Shui principles.

The Cultural Melting Bath uses Taifu rocks from China and an American-made Jacuzzi tub. The water is infused with five kinds of medical herbs. As I soaked in the warm water, surrounded by the sea and sky, I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. It was a truly unique experience, blending art, nature, and culture in a way that only Naoshima can.

It's funny, I never thought I'd be taking a bath as part of an art installation. But here I was, embracing the unexpected and finding a sense of calm in the process. It reminded me of the importance of taking time for oneself, something that's easy to forget in the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Dinner at Yuunagi: Flounder Delights

For dinner, I decided to try Yuunagi, a restaurant known for its flounder dishes. Located near the ferry terminal, Yuunagi offers a variety of flounder preparations, including fried, simmered, and sashimi. I opted for the fried flounder set, which came with a whole fish.

The flounder was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the set was a delicious way to end the day. The restaurant is popular with locals and tourists alike, and it's a great spot to enjoy fresh seafood in a casual setting.

Reflections on the Day

Today was a day of immersion and discovery. I experienced Naoshima's unique blend of art, history, and culture, and I gained a deeper understanding of the island and its people. From the repurposed spaces of Miyanoura Gallery 6 to the industrial art of Shipyard Works and the soothing waters of the Cultural Melting Bath, Naoshima continues to surprise and inspire.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of the island's outdoor art installations, including Walking Ark and La forêt des murmures. I'm also looking forward to visiting Gokurakuji Temple and enjoying dinner at Raumen Tsumu. And perhaps I'll stop by maimai for a drink. I must remember to buy sunscreen before heading out; the sun here is quite strong, and I don't want to end up looking like a lobster!
