Farewell, Naoshima: A Symphony of Art, Nature, and Heartbeats

As my Naoshima adventure draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of contentment and longing. This island, a canvas where art and nature intertwine, has captured my heart in ways I never imagined. Today, my final day, was a journey of quiet reflection, hidden discoveries, and heartfelt experiences that will forever resonate within me. I set out to explore the less-trodden paths of Naoshima, eager to uncover the island's hidden soul before bidding it adieu.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at maimai. I savored a delicious Hamachi burger, a local specialty featuring Japanese amberjack with a unique tartar sauce made from local fish and olives. As I enjoyed my meal, I reflected on the culinary adventures I've had during my stay, each dish telling a story of Naoshima's rich culture and local flavors. It's amazing how a simple burger can encapsulate the essence of a place, blending tradition with innovation. Fuelled up for the day, I headed towards my first destination: Tsunosaki.

Coastal Serenity at Tsunosaki

Tsunosaki is a serene scenic spot that captivates visitors with its stunning coastal vistas and tranquil atmosphere. The gentle sound of the waves and the endless horizon created a sense of peace that washed over me. I spent some time simply sitting by the shore, sketchbook in hand, attempting to capture the essence of the scene. The way the light played on the water, the rugged coastline meeting the gentle sea – it was a masterpiece painted by nature itself. It was the perfect spot for quiet contemplation, a chance to reflect on my journey and the many inspiring moments I've experienced here. I can imagine Anjali would love this place, perhaps I will bring her here one day. As I wandered along the coastline, I found myself drawn to the harmony between art and nature that defines Naoshima.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Next on my itinerary was a visit to the Heart Sound Archive Les Archives du Cœur.

Echoes of the Heart: Les Archives du Cœur

This unique museum is dedicated to collecting and preserving heartbeats from people all over the world. The concept, conceived by artist Christian Boltanski, is both profound and deeply moving. As I entered the archive, I was enveloped by the rhythmic sound of thousands of heartbeats, each one representing a life, a story, a unique individual. It was an overwhelming experience, a reminder of our shared humanity and the fragile nature of existence. The archive is divided into three rooms: the Heart Room, a recording room, and a listening room. I decided to record my own heartbeat, leaving a tiny piece of myself as part of this incredible art piece. In the listening room, I spent time searching through the database, listening to the heartbeats of strangers from distant lands. Each beat resonated with a sense of connection, transcending language and cultural barriers. It was a powerful reminder that beneath the surface, we are all connected by the universal rhythm of life. I thought of Arjun and Anjali, and the steady rhythm of our family life back in Leipzig. This experience touched me deeply, reinforcing the importance of cherishing every moment and embracing our shared humanity. It’s funny how a simple sound can evoke such profound emotions.

After the emotionally charged visit to the Heart Sound Archive, I was ready for a change of pace. Lunch was calling, and I made my way to Naoshima Yokocho.

A Taste of Local Life at Naoshima Yokocho

Naoshima Yokocho is a charming izakaya, a traditional Japanese pub, offering a taste of local cuisine and culture. I opted for a set meal featuring fresh sashimi and udon noodles in a rich broth. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, filled with locals and tourists alike. It was the perfect place to unwind and soak in the island's vibrant energy. I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff and fellow diners, exchanging stories and travel tips. It was interesting to learn about their experiences on the island and to hear their perspectives on the art and culture that Naoshima is known for. The food was delicious, the company was engaging, and the overall experience was a delightful immersion into Naoshima's local life. I made a mental note to try and recreate the udon broth back home; Anjali would adore it.

With my appetite satisfied and my spirits lifted, I ventured towards my final art destination of the day: Perma_Naoshima (パーマ).

Ramen and Rejuvenation at Perma_Naoshima (パーマ)

Perma_Naoshima is a unique establishment that combines a ramen restaurant with a creative space. Housed in a renovated traditional building, Perma_Naoshima exudes a cool, artistic vibe. I indulged in a bowl of their signature ramen, savoring the rich flavors and the perfectly cooked noodles. The restaurant itself is a work of art, with quirky decor and a laid-back atmosphere. It felt like a hidden gem, a place where locals and art enthusiasts gather to enjoy good food and good company. While enjoying my ramen, I observed the other patrons, a mix of locals and tourists, all drawn to this unique space. It was a reminder that art can be found in the most unexpected places, even in a humble ramen shop. I appreciated the creativity and passion that went into creating such a special place. The building was formerly a barber shop.

Before dinner, I wanted to get a small gift for Anjali, so I decided to visit Mikazukishoten.

Coffee and Curiosities at Mikazukishoten

Mikazukishoten is a charming coffee stand and souvenir shop. Tucked away in a quiet corner, this little gem is a haven for coffee lovers and art enthusiasts alike. I savored a cup of their expertly brewed coffee, enjoying the cozy atmosphere and the eclectic collection of souvenirs. The owner was incredibly friendly, sharing stories about the island and its artistic community. I picked up a small, handcrafted ceramic bowl for Anjali, a reminder of Naoshima's unique charm. As I sipped my coffee, I browsed the shop's collection of local crafts and art books, feeling a sense of connection to the island's creative spirit. Mikazukishoten is more than just a coffee shop; it's a gathering place, a hub for artistic exchange, and a testament to the power of community. The owner had been watching the Japanese fashion scene for many years when he decided to open a specialty coffee stand on Naoshima island.

For my final dinner on Naoshima, I chose Little Plum.

A Culinary Farewell at Little Plum

Little Plum is a cozy restaurant known for its delicious dishes made with local ingredients. The atmosphere was intimate and inviting, the perfect setting for a reflective final meal. I savored each bite, appreciating the freshness and the artistry of the cuisine. The seafood pescatore was particularly memorable. As I dined, I reminisced about my culinary adventures on Naoshima, from the humble street food to the refined restaurant experiences. Each meal had been a journey of discovery, a way to connect with the island's culture and its people. Little Plum provided the perfect ending to this culinary chapter, a final taste of Naoshima's unique flavors. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience such a vibrant and diverse food scene. The restaurant uses fresh vegetables and seafood from the Seto Inland Sea.

As the sun set over Naoshima, casting a golden glow over the island, I found myself filled with a sense of gratitude. This journey had been more than just a vacation; it had been a transformative experience, a chance to connect with art, nature, and myself on a deeper level. I'll miss the art, the scenery, and the friendly people. This island has left an indelible mark on my soul, inspiring me to see the world in new ways. As I prepare to leave tomorrow, I know that a part of me will always remain here, amidst the art, the beauty, and the heartbeats of Naoshima. I leave tomorrow, heading back to Leipzig, eager to share my experiences with Anjali and Arjun. Until next time, Naoshima, goodbye.
