Day 9: Naoshima's Hidden Charms: Art, Community, and Culinary Delights
Explore Naoshima beyond the museums: Discover local art, community spaces, and savor authentic flavors in this captivating island paradise.
A Day of Discovery Beyond the Museums
Today was a day of venturing beyond the well-trodden paths of Naoshima's famous art museums. I wanted to experience the island's pulse, to connect with its community, and to savor the flavors that define its unique character. It was a journey of discovery, revealing the heart and soul of Naoshima, one hidden gem at a time.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Tee's DELI GROCERY. This cozy diner is known for its inviting atmosphere and diverse menu, offering everything from breakfast options to satisfying lunches. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and rice. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and I enjoyed chatting with some locals who were regulars at the diner. It felt like a true immersion into the island's daily life. Tee's DELI GROCERY is a beloved diner known for capturing the essence of Japanese hospitality and culinary creativity.

After breakfast, I set out to find the Chinu - the Black Sea Bream of Uno. This captivating art piece is made from recycled marine debris, featuring two large sea bream sculptures, with one functioning as a slide. It's located in the port of Uno, and it was quite a sight to behold. The intricate details, crafted from what appears to be garbage from afar, transform into remarkable art when examined closely. I marveled at the artist's creativity and skill in repurposing discarded materials into something so beautiful and thought-provoking. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of sustainability and the potential for art to raise awareness about environmental issues.

Next on my itinerary was the George Rickey Three Squares Vertical Diagonal, 1972-82. This kinetic sculpture is located near the Benesse House Museum, and it's a stunning example of how art can interact with its environment. The sculpture consists of three large, silver squares that sway gently in the wind, creating a mesmerizing dance against the backdrop of the coastal path. I spent a good amount of time simply watching the sculpture move, its heavy iron plates gracefully responding to the breeze. The minimalist design contrasted beautifully with the natural landscape, encouraging reflection and contemplation.

To think about architecture is to “consider the details of the earth”.
For lunch, I ventured to Ishii Shouten, a charming udon noodle shop. The aroma of freshly made udon wafted through the air as I stepped inside, and I knew I was in for a treat. I ordered a bowl of their signature *kake udon*, a simple yet satisfying dish of thick, chewy noodles in a light broth. The noodles were handmade daily, and the broth was flavorful and comforting. It was a truly authentic taste of local flavors, and I savored every bite. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making it an ideal spot to take a break from exploring.

After lunch, I made my way to Naoshima Hall, a public, multi-purpose facility built for the residents of Naoshima. Designed by Hiroshi Sambuichi, the hall is a beautiful example of sustainable architecture, seamlessly weaving into the area's environment and the daily lives of the local inhabitants. Sambuichi researched the construction site for over two years, taking into consideration the wind, water, and sun patterns. The hall features a hip-and-gable roof made from hinoki cypress, with a large wind passage constructed through the center to control airflow. This eco-friendly feature cools and ventilates the hall using just wind power. The space is used for sports, recreation, local festivals, and the performing arts. It was inspiring to see a building that was so thoughtfully designed and integrated into the community. The hall's garden conveys the changing seasons, with cherry blossoms in spring and colorful leaves in the fall. It is at once a work of art, an astonishing piece of architecture, and a symbol of Sambuichi's research into this island's many 'flows'.

As the sun began to set, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Kon'nichiwa. This cozy restaurant is located near Honmura port, and it offers a variety of delicious beverages and light meals, showcasing local ingredients. I opted for their vegetable curry set, which featured a small salad and a drink. The curry was flavorful and filling, and the staff were friendly and attentive. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, savoring the flavors of Naoshima while soaking in the island's artistic ambiance. The café prides itself on using fresh, seasonal ingredients, which can be seen in the changing menu options.

My final stop for the day was BAR Queen's-Q Naoshima, a unique and intimate bar with a great atmosphere. The bar features live music, with hits from iconic bands. With only a few seats at the bar, the bartender provides dedicated attention to each customer and crafts cocktails with pure passion. The liquors they use are of the finest quality. The owner clearly considered every detail, from the beautiful cocktail glasses to the water vessels. It was a great place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

And of course, I'll be sure to pick up a souvenir or two at Mikazukishoten before heading back to Leipzig.
