Solo Art and Culinary Exploration on Naoshima Island
Day 8: Summiting Naoshima's Heights: A Day of Views and Culinary Delights
Explore Naoshima's scenic Danyama, Shihōzashi Tower, and Kasaneiwa, savoring local cuisine and island charm on a solo adventure.
A Day Among the Heights of Naoshima
Today was all about embracing the natural beauty of Naoshima, trading the hushed halls of museums for panoramic views and the open sky. It was a day to breathe in the island air, stretch my legs, and discover the quieter, more contemplative side of this artistic haven. As much as I adore the art installations, sometimes a good hike and a hearty meal are exactly what the soul needs.
The day began, as most do here, with a delicious breakfast at Luke's Table. It's conveniently located at My Lodge Naoshima, and I always appreciate the fusion of French and Japanese cuisine. The restaurant overlooks the Seto Inland Sea, offering a serene start to the day. I opted for a simple but satisfying plate of grilled fish with miso soup and rice, fueling up for the day's adventures. After a quick chat with the friendly staff, I was ready to set off. The weather was promising, with clear skies and a gentle breeze, perfect for exploring the island's elevated spots.

My first stop was Danyama, a scenic overlook that promised breathtaking views. The walk there was pleasant, a gentle climb through lush greenery. As I ascended, the landscape opened up, revealing the sparkling Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding islands. The panoramic vista from the top was truly stunning. I could see the terraced rice fields of Teshima in the distance, a testament to the region's agricultural heritage. I spent a good hour simply soaking in the view, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. It reminded me of the rolling hills of Nepal, albeit with a vastly different seascape. I made a mental note to share this view with Anjali; she would love it.

Sometimes, the most profound art is the landscape itself, waiting to be discovered.
Next on the itinerary was the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower. The tower offered an even more elevated perspective, and the climb was invigorating. From the top, the 360-degree views were simply spectacular. I could see the entire island of Naoshima laid out before me, a tapestry of green hills, blue waters, and the occasional splash of color from an art installation. It was a great way to get a sense of the island's geography and appreciate its natural beauty. I even spotted a few of the outdoor sculptures from Benesse House in the distance.

By now, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I made my way to EAT LOCAL 直島食堂 for lunch. This restaurant is known for its authentic Japanese cuisine, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. I opted for the fried chicken set meal, a hearty and satisfying dish that perfectly captured the homestyle flavors of the region. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the other diners, swapping travel stories and recommendations. I learned a few new Japanese phrases, which I always appreciate. Plus, it’s always a treat to discover new culinary inspiration for my own cooking back in Leipzig. Maybe I’ll try to recreate this fried chicken with a Nepali twist!

With renewed energy, I set out for my final destination of the day: Kasaneiwa. This intriguing rock formation is shrouded in mystery, with no one quite sure whether it was formed naturally or by human hands. The hike to Kasaneiwa was a bit more challenging, with steep and rocky paths. But the effort was well worth it. The sight of the precariously balanced rocks was truly awe-inspiring. The area had a palpable sense of history and spirituality, and I felt a deep connection to the land. I took some photos, trying to capture the unique beauty of the site, but it's something that truly needs to be experienced in person.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I decided to stop by kokochi, a charming little shop known for its sweets and cakes. After all that hiking, I deserved a treat! I indulged in a slice of their signature cake, a delicate and flavorful creation that was the perfect ending to a perfect day. The shop itself was delightful, with a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. I picked up a few small souvenirs for Anjali and Arjun, a little taste of Naoshima to bring back home.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Nagomi for dinner. Located within the Naoshima welfare center, this restaurant offers a taste of community and hearty Japanese meals. I enjoyed a set meal of grilled fish, rice, and miso soup, a simple but satisfying way to end the day. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and I felt a sense of connection to the local community. I thought about Anjali and Arjun, and how much I missed them. Solo travel is wonderful, but sharing these experiences with loved ones makes them even more special.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Naoshima offers so much more than just art museums. Its natural beauty, its delicious cuisine, and its warm, welcoming people are all integral parts of its charm. Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of the island's art scene, visiting Chinu - the Black Sea Bream of Uno, George Rickey Three Squares Vertical Diagonal, 1972-82, and Naoshima Hall. And perhaps I’ll treat myself to a drink at BAR Queen's-Q Naoshima in the evening. But for now, I'm content to relax and savor the memories of a day well spent, appreciating the heights and flavors of Naoshima.
