Whispers of the Past, Flavors of Today

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey that took me from the silent ruins of a Roman city to the vibrant heart of a holy Moroccan town. It was a day filled with history, culture, and of course, delicious food. Elena would have loved wandering through the ancient ruins with me, she always had a fascination for the Roman Empire. I know Miguel would have enjoyed the food.

The day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Café Restaurant Ksar Pharaon. The café was bustling with locals, and the aroma of mint tea filled the air. I savored every bite of the traditional msemen and harcha, flaky pancakes drizzled with honey, fueling up for a day of exploration. It reminded me of the breakfasts Elena and I used to make back in Stratford, though hers never quite captured the authentic Moroccan flavor.

Our first stop was the Site Archéologique de Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As we approached, the sprawling ruins emerged from the rolling hills, a testament to a civilization that once thrived here. The October sun beat down, but a gentle breeze kept us comfortable as we wandered through the ancient streets. The temperature was pleasantly warm, with a high of 84°F (29°C) and a low of 60°F (16°C). I imagined what life must have been like in this bustling city centuries ago. I made sure I had my camera ready to capture every moment, remembering how I almost forgot my portable phone charger, but thankfully I didn’t.

The ruins were impressive, with remnants of grand houses, bathhouses, and a towering basilica. The mosaics, remarkably preserved, depicted scenes from Roman mythology and everyday life. I found myself lost in the details, marveling at the artistry and craftsmanship of the ancient Romans. I could almost hear the echoes of their voices, the sounds of their footsteps on the stone streets. My guidebook on Moroccan history came in handy as I tried to piece together the story of this once-great city.

After immersing ourselves in the history of Volubilis, we drove to Kasabah Senhaji, a nearby village known for its traditional architecture and stunning views. The village was a maze of narrow streets and whitewashed houses, clinging to the hillside. We wandered through the labyrinthine alleys, admiring the intricate details of the buildings and the vibrant colors of the local crafts. I picked up a small, hand-painted ceramic bowl as a souvenir, a reminder of the beauty and artistry of this hidden gem.

For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Volubilis, conveniently located near the archaeological site. While the reviews mentioned that the service might not always meet expectations, we were pleasantly surprised. The tagine was flavorful and aromatic, and the mint tea was the perfect refreshment after a morning of exploring. It wasn't quite Elena's cooking, but it was satisfying nonetheless.

In the late afternoon, we made our way to Dar Zerhoune, a bar known for its panoramic views and relaxed atmosphere. As we sipped on refreshing drinks, we watched the sun begin to set over the hills, casting a golden glow over the landscape. The view was breathtaking, with the ancient ruins of Volubilis in the distance and the rolling hills of the Moulay Idriss region stretching out before us. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, reflecting on the beauty and history that surrounded us.

For dinner, we decided to try Grillade Albanna, a local restaurant known for its Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisine. The kefta was delicious, and the eggplant salad was a refreshing and flavorful side dish. The restaurant had a beautiful view, adding to the overall dining experience. It reminded me of the small Filipino restaurants back in Laoag, where simple, home-cooked meals were always the most satisfying.

As the evening drew to a close, we found ourselves at Dar Zerhoune again, this time to enjoy the ambiance of the bar under the stars. The atmosphere was lively, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. I struck up a conversation with a fellow traveler from France, and we swapped tales of our adventures in Morocco. It was a reminder of the connections that travel can forge, the way it can bring people together from different corners of the world.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Bab Rmila Natural Park and Bassin Souani, continuing our journey through the natural and historical wonders of the Moulay Idriss region. I am particularly excited about Bab Rmila Natural Park, as I have heard it offers stunning views and a chance to connect with nature. I am also looking forward to visiting Bassin Souani, an ancient reservoir that is said to be a marvel of engineering. We will have breakfast at Haytam, lunch at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk, and dinner at Al Andaloussiya Diyafa.

As I write this, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. From the ancient ruins of Volubilis to the vibrant streets of Moulay Idriss, I have been immersed in the history, culture, and beauty of this remarkable region. And with each passing day, I am discovering new layers of its charm and allure. I am also grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with you, my readers, and I hope that my words have inspired you to embark on your own journey of discovery. I am looking forward to sharing more of my adventures with you in the days to come.

The beauty of Moulay Idriss is that it's still relatively untouched by mass tourism. It offers a genuine glimpse into Moroccan life, a chance to connect with the locals and experience their culture firsthand. It's a place where you can slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate the simple things in life. It's a place that will stay with you long after you've left, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world.

I am also thinking about Elena and Miguel, and how much they would have enjoyed this trip. I miss them both dearly, but I know that they are with me in spirit, guiding me and inspiring me to explore the world with open eyes and an open heart. I am grateful for their love and support, and I am determined to make the most of this journey, not just for myself, but for them as well. I think I will try to find a small gift for them tomorrow, something that will remind them of Morocco and the adventures that await us in the future. Perhaps a small tagine pot for Elena or a leather-bound journal for Miguel. Until tomorrow!

The evening ends with a final glass of mint tea, the sweet, fragrant liquid a perfect punctuation mark to a day well spent. As I drift off to sleep, I dream of mosaics and minarets, of ancient stones and the smiling faces of the Moroccan people. Morocco, you have captured my heart. And I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
