A Holy Beginning

Our Moroccan adventure has officially begun! Today, we found ourselves in Moulay Idriss, a town shrouded in history and spiritual significance. It's a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to truly soak in the culture and connect with the local way of life. I'm excited to share my experiences as we explore this sacred town together.

As someone who enjoys genealogy and local history, I was particularly drawn to Moulay Idriss because of its rich heritage. Plus, after the hustle and bustle of Toronto, a slower pace is exactly what Elena and I needed. I'm here with my friends, ready to embrace the unknown and immerse myself in the heart of Morocco. So far, it's living up to all expectations!

Our journey started with a flight from Toronto to Casablanca, followed by a scenic train ride to the Moulay Idriss region. The weather in October is pleasantly warm, with temperatures ranging from a high of 84°F (29°C) to a low of 60°F (16°C), making it perfect for exploring. I made sure to pack my comfortable walking shoes, travel journal, and camera – essentials for any good travel blogger! I did forget my sunglasses, though, which was a slight oversight.

First impressions of the region were breathtaking. The rolling hills and olive groves painted a picturesque landscape as we approached the town. The air was filled with the scent of spices and the sounds of daily life, a sensory symphony that immediately captivated me. Finding our way to our guesthouse was an adventure in itself, navigating the narrow, winding streets with the help of friendly locals.

After settling in, we were ready to explore. Our first stop was the Haroune Aqueduct.

A Glimpse into Ancient Engineering: Haroune Aqueduct

The Haroune Aqueduct stands as a testament to the ingenuity of ancient civilizations. Although many believe it to be of Roman origin, it was actually constructed by the Alaouite Sultan Moulay Abdel Aziz in the early 20th century. This remarkable structure, with its towering arches, was built to supply water to Moulay Idriss from the Ain Chanch spring. As I stood there, camera in hand, I couldn't help but marvel at the blend of history and engineering before me. The aqueduct is nestled between two hills, creating a stunning visual against the backdrop of lush greenery. It was easy to imagine how vital this water source was for the sustenance of the town and surrounding agriculture.

The friends and I walked along the pathways leading to the aqueduct, each of us finding our own unique vantage point to appreciate its scale and beauty. It was a peaceful experience, soaking in the history while listening to the tranquil sounds of nature. This aqueduct is not only a marvel of construction but also a significant piece of the region's history.

Spiritual Heart of Moulay Idriss: Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er

Next, we ventured towards the heart of Moulay Idriss, the Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er. This is the final resting place of Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty, and a site of profound spiritual importance. As a non-Muslim, I couldn't enter the tomb itself, but even from the outside, I could feel the palpable sense of reverence and history. I was able to peek through the entrance and get a small view of the building. The architecture was exquisite, with intricate details that spoke volumes about the cultural and religious significance of the site.

The streets surrounding the mausoleum form the sacred quarter, once demarcated by wooden barriers to prevent non-Muslims from entering. It's a testament to the town's long-held traditions and beliefs. Although I couldn't visit the tomb, I took the opportunity to wander through the nearby streets, observing the daily life of the locals and soaking in the unique atmosphere.

As we walked around, we observed the Zawiya of Moulay Idriss I with its green-tiled roof. It is a religious complex with a mosque and the mausoleum. I felt a special sense of peace at this pilgrimage site.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are the ones you can only observe from a respectful distance.

Our exploration continued into the heart of Moulay Idriss Downtown, a bustling hub of local life. The medina was a maze of narrow streets, each turn revealing something new and exciting. The pastel-colored houses were a delight, adding to the town's unique charm. It was easy to get lost in the labyrinthine alleyways, but that was part of the fun!

I was particularly interested in visiting The Anou Cooperative, a shop that supports local artisans. Explore The Anou Cooperative in Fès for a unique shopping experience that supports local artisans and celebrates Moroccan craftsmanship.

This collective is owned and managed by Moroccan artisans, ensuring fair compensation and promoting traditional craftsmanship. I was impressed by their commitment to transparency and quality, and I ended up purchasing a beautiful rug as a souvenir. It felt good to support the local economy and take home a piece of authentic Moroccan culture.

Navigating the streets, we met many friendly locals, children, and donkeys. The people of Moulay Idriss were incredibly welcoming, and I never felt unsafe. Their kindness and hospitality made the experience even more special. The local market was a feast for the senses, with vibrant displays of fresh produce and spices. I was amazed by the quality and variety of the goods on offer, and the prices were very reasonable. It was a far cry from the tourist traps I've encountered in other cities.

There are not many touristy shops and even Google Maps could not help us find our way. We truly got lost in the maze of passages.

No trip is complete without indulging in the local cuisine, and Moulay Idriss did not disappoint. For breakfast, we started our day at SCORPION HOUSE, a retreat owned by Mike Richardson, also the owner of Cafe Clock in Fez. Set high on a hillside, the house offers stunning views of Moulay Idriss. The building is filled with retro furniture and Moroccan art. The multilayered, plant-filled terraces and gardens look over the mosques and houses of Moulay Idriss. The views were magical, especially with the call to prayer echoing through the town. The food was delicious, a mix of traditional Moroccan flavors with a modern twist.

For lunch, we chose La Baraka, a restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. Experience authentic Moroccan cuisine at La Baraka in Moulay Idriss Zerhoun - where tradition meets flavor in every dish.

We tried the couscous and chicken, both of which were cooked to perfection. The staff was friendly and the service was excellent. The restaurant had a comfortable atmosphere, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy a meal. It was rated one of the best restaurants in the city.

Finally, for dinner, we dined at Restaurant Moulay Idriss, eager to experience more local flavors. Savor authentic Moroccan cuisine at Restaurant Moulay Idriss in Fes El Bali - a true culinary gem for travelers seeking local flavors.

I savored a tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, and it was bursting with aromatic spices and tender meat. The meal was a delightful end to a day filled with exploration and discovery. The restaurant is one of the few dining options in Moulay Idriss. The restaurant options are slim.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Site Archéologique de Volubilis and Kasabah Senhaji. I'm particularly excited about exploring Volubilis, as it promises a fascinating glimpse into Morocco's Roman past. We'll start the day with breakfast at Café Restaurant Ksar Pharaon, followed by lunch at Restaurant Volubilis and dinner at Grillade Albanna. We'll also check out Dar Zerhoune, a local bar, for a taste of the nightlife.

As the sun set over Moulay Idriss, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. This town is a true gem, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and spirituality. It's a place where you can truly connect with the local way of life and create memories that will last a lifetime. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings as we continue our Moroccan adventure.

There are many festivals in Morocco and there may be one in the Moulay Idriss region. There is the Tan-Tan Moussem in October.
