Day 7: A Day of Discovery in Moulay Idriss: Gates, Views, and Culinary Delights
Exploring the historical gates and savoring traditional Moroccan flavors in the enchanting town of Moulay Idriss with friends.
Exploring the Mystical Heart of Moulay Idriss
Today was a day of wandering through history and savoring the local culture of Moulay Idriss. This town, with its spiritual significance, has a way of pulling you into its timeless embrace. The winding streets and vibrant atmosphere made for a day filled with exploration and delightful surprises, and I'm excited to share every moment with you.
The sun peeked over the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink as I started my day. The crisp October air was a refreshing change from the Canadian chill I'm used to, and I felt a surge of energy as I anticipated the day's adventures. After a quick mental inventory, I realized I still hadn't replaced my portable phone charger or sunglasses – a mental note to remedy that soon! [from TripEssentialsForgotten]
Our first stop was Dar Moulay Idriss. But before diving into history, we needed breakfast! We found ourselves at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk, a charming spot known for its traditional Moroccan breakfast. The aroma of freshly baked bread and mint tea filled the air. I indulged in some Moroccan pancakes with honey and couscous bread, a delightful start to the day. It reminded me of the times Elena and I would try new Filipino breakfast recipes, though this was a completely different, yet equally satisfying, experience.

Fuelled up, we headed to Dar Moulay Idriss. This historical landmark is a testament to Morocco's rich heritage. The intricate zellige tilework, ornate stucco decorations, and beautifully crafted cedar wood ceilings were breathtaking. As I wandered through the serene courtyards, I imagined the lives of Moroccan nobility from centuries past. The architecture was a stunning blend of Moorish and Andalusian styles. I spent a good hour simply soaking in the atmosphere, snapping photos, and making notes in my travel journal.
Leaving Dar Moulay Idriss, we decided to explore the town further. The medina was bustling with activity. Locals were going about their daily lives, and the sounds of bartering and laughter filled the air. The narrow streets were a maze of shops selling everything from spices and textiles to ceramics and metalwork. I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs – a small tagine for Elena and a colorful scarf for myself.
For lunch, we chose Restaurant Moulay Idriss. This cozy restaurant offered a variety of traditional dishes. I decided to try the tagine, a classic Moroccan stew cooked in a clay pot. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the vegetables were perfectly cooked. It was a hearty and satisfying meal that gave me a true taste of Moroccan cuisine. I even attempted to recreate a similar dish back at our guesthouse, but it didn't quite match the authentic flavors of the restaurant. I need to get Elena's opinion on it when I get back; she's always had a knack for tweaking recipes to perfection.

After lunch, we set our sights on the Khemis Gate, an iconic entrance to the city. As we approached the gate, I was immediately struck by its grandeur. The intricate carvings, the arch, and the tiles in green and blue colors were stunning. The gate dates back to the 17th century and was once the main entrance to the city's garden district.

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
Standing there, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. The Khemis Gate is more than just an entrance; it's a symbol of the city's rich history and cultural heritage. It reminded me of the historical landmarks back in the Philippines, each with its own unique story to tell.
As the day drew to a close, we sought out a place to relax and unwind. We stumbled upon Dar Zerhoune, a guesthouse with a rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Roman ruins of Volubilis. Although Dar Zerhoune is also a restaurant, we headed to Café Restaurant Ksar Pharaon for dinner. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the menu featured a variety of Moroccan and Western dishes. I opted for a traditional Moroccan tagine, while my friends tried some of the Western options. The food was delicious, and the views from the terrace were simply breathtaking.

After dinner, we decided to experience some local nightlife. We visited Dar Zerhoune again, this time to check out their bar. The ambiance was relaxed and friendly, and we enjoyed some refreshing drinks while chatting with the locals. It was a great way to end a perfect day in Moulay Idriss.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Moulay Idriss. The people here are warm and welcoming, the food is delicious, and the history is fascinating. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a visit to Place Moulay Hassan and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. I'm also excited to try the local cuisine at Grillade Albanna for breakfast, Roman City for lunch, and Haytam for dinner. And who knows, maybe we'll even find time to relax at LA TERRASSE [from Itinerary of Tomorrow].
But for now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of exploration. Goodnight from Moulay Idriss!
P.S. I must remember to buy that portable charger and sunglasses tomorrow!
