Spiritual Sojourn in Moulay Idriss

Today was a day of reflection and exploration in the sacred town of Moulay Idriss. It's hard to believe this is the penultimate day of our Moroccan adventure with friends! I woke up with a sense of anticipation, eager to delve deeper into the cultural and spiritual heart of this region. I knew today would be special, and it certainly didn't disappoint.

Our day began with a traditional Moroccan breakfast at Grillade Albanna. The restaurant offered a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape. I savored the simple yet satisfying combination of fresh bread, olives, and mint tea. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of sightseeing. Elena particularly enjoyed the chicken salads and eggplant salad.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set out to explore Place Moulay Hassan. Although I know Place Moulay Hassan is actually in Essaouira, I was still excited to see what Place Moulay Hassan in Moulay Idriss had to offer. The square was indeed lively, with locals going about their daily routines. I observed children playing, families strolling, and vendors selling their wares. The atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming, offering a glimpse into the heart of Moroccan life.

The beauty of a place often lies not just in its monuments, but in the everyday moments that unfold within it.

Next on our itinerary was the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail in Meknes. The mausoleum is one of the few sacred sites in Morocco open to non-Muslims. The peacefulness of the pale-yellow courtyards leading to the tomb contrasted sharply with the turbulent reign of Moulay Ismail. Although non-Muslims cannot enter the tomb itself, the anteroom was breathtaking, with soaring ceilings, intricate plasterwork, and delicately patterned zellij tiles. A small fountain, adorned with an eight-pointed star, added to the room's perfect symmetry. It was a truly magnificent space, inspiring quiet contemplation. Elena was particularly moved by the intricate designs and the sense of serenity that permeated the space.

For lunch, we ventured to Roman City. The restaurant's warm hospitality and traditional Moroccan cuisine made for a delightful experience. Hans raved about the lemon and olive chicken, declaring it the best he had tasted in Morocco.

After a morning filled with historical and spiritual exploration, we decided to unwind at LA TERRASSE. Perched high above the medina, this bar offered stunning views of Moulay Idriss and the surrounding landscape. Sipping on refreshing drinks, we watched as the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the town. It was the perfect way to relax and reflect on the day's adventures.

As the day drew to a close, we sought out Haytam for dinner. We were looking for authentic Moroccan flavors, and Haytam, a hidden gem, did not disappoint. The restaurant was a cozy and inviting space, perfect for a relaxed evening meal. We savored traditional dishes, each bursting with unique and aromatic spices. It was a fitting end to a day of culinary and cultural exploration.

Reflecting on today's experiences, I am struck by the unique charm of Moulay Idriss. The town's rich history, spiritual significance, and warm hospitality have left an indelible mark on my soul. It's a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the present moment. The call to prayer echoing through the hills as the sun set was particularly moving, a reminder of the deep faith that permeates this sacred town.

Tomorrow marks the final day of our trip, and we plan to make the most of it by visiting Dar El-Makhzen and Bab Boujloud. I'm particularly excited to explore Dar El-Makhzen, as I've heard it offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the region. Hans is eager to see Bab Boujloud, drawn to its stunning architecture and intricate details. We'll also be trying out new restaurants, including Volubilis for breakfast, Al Andaloussiya Diyafa for lunch, and La Baraka for dinner. It's bittersweet to think that our Moroccan adventure is coming to an end, but I know that the memories we've created here will last a lifetime.

As I prepare for our final day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to have experienced the magic of Moulay Idriss. It's a place that has touched my heart and soul, leaving me with a renewed appreciation for the beauty and wonder of the world. Despite the lack of luxurious accommodations, we found the local guesthouses charming and comfortable, offering a genuine taste of Moroccan hospitality, and it was just what we needed.

I'm also grateful for the reminder to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life. In our busy world, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But in Moulay Idriss, I was reminded to savor each moment, to connect with the people around me, and to find joy in the beauty of the natural world. It's a lesson that I will carry with me long after I leave this sacred town. I hope to bring some of this peace back home to Stratford, and maybe even try my hand at making some traditional Moroccan dishes for Elena and Miguel. Perhaps I'll even share some photos with the Filipino community; I know they'd appreciate the vibrant culture and warm hospitality of Morocco.

And who knows, maybe one day I'll return to Moulay Idriss and complete the six pilgrimages needed to equal a Haj to Mecca. Until then, I will cherish the memories of this incredible journey and continue to seek out new adventures that nourish my soul.
